Bulbasaur is a synapsid (paleo nerds and Pokémon geeks take heed!)

Description of a new dicynodont, Bulbasaurus phylloxyron. The epithet phylloxyron means "razor leaf." I'm just a little bit too old to have gotten on the Pokémon train, so I had to Google to figure out the joke. But those of you just a few years younger should get a kick out of it.

Thank goodness we've got that sorted out! Bulbasaur was one of the hardest for me to ID. Its like, just a super generic dinosaur.

Bulbasaur does not like a Dinosaur at all.

Geez, they really had to name that poor animal after that thing? First Aerodactylus, not this? That are clearly two prehistoric animals too many named after Pokemon.

Edit: Oh wait, it is not named after Bulbasaur, but the name is still way too close for comfort.

I always thought it was a horned frog afflicted with some sort of parasitic plant.

Technically, if Bulba can control the plant, it shouldn't be parasitic, more of a symbiotic relationship.

I have met the first author a couple of times, and I assure you that the homage is 100% intentional. He's probably been waiting years for an excuse to name something after a Pokémon.

So it is indirectly named after a Pokemon.

Honestly, I would say directly. I think he started with the name of the Pokémon and worked backward to find something in the specimen to make it work. The species name is the Greek translation for an attack that the character uses in the game, even though the etymology in the paper says that it's because of the shape of the teeth.

As a pokemon fan, I think that's pretty cool. Even more so, because Bulbasaur is one of my favorites ever since the gen 1 days when I was still a kid then. After delving back into prehistoric stuff again, I kind of thought Bulbasaur worked better as a synapsid then a dinosaur, so nice to see one named after it. I think its neat that they picked "razor leaf" for its species name as well, since that was always one of the moves it learns from the older games at least. Wonder if this find will get some artwork (though hopefully not depicting it as the pokemon, of course).

I for one don't mind it, albeit I know I must sound hypocritical since I so avidly detest Dracorex hogwartsia. Does it feel "necessary"? Not by any means no, but I think it's rather cleverly named and at least the name itself is not entirely irrelevant to the animals defining characteristics.

Thanks for that link. That artwork turned out pretty awesome. Looks like an interesting creature too (I'm really not too familiar with anything in the Permian beyond Dimetrodon, Edaphosaurus, Inostrancevia, and Scutosaurus).
