Cloud the Dinosaur King

Hello! I am going to make a new line of dinosaurs called Mesozoic Masterpiece. I need some help on making the models, so if any one could help me that would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any thoughts on what species you want to do?

I am going to start out with a Spinosaurus swimming. Latter on I will probably add a base to it that has 3 Onchopristis. I also have some suggestions on my YouTube channel that involve an Allosaurus attacking a Stegosaurus and a pack of Dakotaraptors feasting on a dead Tyrannosaurus.

Neat. What materials are you going to be making them of? Are they all going to be one-offs or are you going to cast them? What kind of help are you looking for? Anatomical information? Sculpting techniques?

I probably need some sculpting techniques. I'm good on the anatomical characteristics. I'm going to base the Spinosaurus off of this picture, probably not the color though.

As for materials, I think Oomoo and Sculpey.

I'm going to cast them.

I've done some research and I should be getting the materials pretty soon. First though, I'm going to practice casting on the CollectA 1:40 scale Spinosaurus so I can get a feel for it. After that I will start work on the Mesozoic Masterpiece Swimming Spinosaurus. And FYI, it will have at least some feathers, but I'm not sure how much feathering I should add. I will also probably add a base that includes 3 Onchopristis. It will use Quick Water for a water effect, or something similar to the Hunting Spinosaurus by Dinostoreus.

Good plan.  I think Kayakasaurus has some tutorial videos on sculpting and casting in his thread.

When you start making your own Spino, I'd recommend first making an armature out of aluminum foil and steel wire that takes up as much of the internal space as possible.  Start with body and tail and maybe the base of the limbs, just go for the basic shape and proportions.  Cover this with a thin layer of clay, smooth it out as best you can, then bake it.  If the layer is less than 1/4 inch thick, only bake for about half the recommended time.  You can add detail before baking if you'd like, but I always like to leave a little room to add more clay and more detail on top.  When that's finished, move on to the limbs and head, you may want to bake them before attaching them to the body.  If you intend to have the jaws open, it's easiest to make and bake them separately.  Once all the main pieces are assembled and attached to each other, then go back in and add the final details.

As for detailing, texture stamps are the easiest way to go.  You can make them off whatever dinosaur toys you have handy.

I hope this helps!  :)

Thanks. I should be making the armature this weekend or next weekend. The Spinosaurur is going to have feathers probably similar to the WS feathered T. rex. And also, the jaws are going to be closed as it is going to have the tip of its snout in the Quick Water.

A slight delay. I should probably have the armature done by the end of spring break, at least by Easter.

One quick update, I will also be making a Spinosaurus in walking pose as well. It will come with a base. It will be walking on 2 legs with its tail dragging on the ground as recent evidence(Siamosaurus footprints from Thailand) has shown.

Sounds cool, best of luck to you!  :)

I am working on a little Ornitholestes figure that is pretty much a customized Chap Mei Ornitholestes. I have already made ll of the cuts that are needed, and now I am just bulking it up with clay. I am planning on casting it am even giving it a base. The colors and basic design are based off of the Dinosaur Revolution Ornitholestes(presumably the one who looses his head, who Scott Hartman refers to as Ichabod) but it will also have feathers similar to those of other neoceolurosaurs like Sinosauropteryx. There is a thread for it here: http://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=5624.0

I am actually going to make them all in 1:15 scale, because I will be making some small dinosaurs. I may also do 1:1 scale dinosaur heads for your wall. Let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions.

If you're willing to take on wacky pterosaurs, I'd recommrend Nyctosaurus, Boreopterus, Huaxiapterus, and Pterodaustro.  You could make them as half-head mounts that attach parallel to the wall, like a mounted fish.  Speaking of which, taxidermy prehistoric fish would be cool too!  ;D
