Syndicate Bias

I'd rather keep it to myself to avoid the drama

Jose S.M.

People can say their opinion on the figures, point out inaccuracies or problems with them, if we could not do that this space wouldn't make sense. The problem is when people have to constantly diminish the work of a company they dislike even when the products are objectively good . In this thread I've seen things I don't like but I think I'm keeping specifics to myself, I don't like endless arguing about "its just an opinion or preference".

Syndicate Bias

Opinion that is. We all have opinions. But mature people see them and move on instead of pushing their own opinion just because they don't agree. It's also the fault of the original person who had the opinion to respond back. Two wrongs don't make a right.

stargatedalek

It's not about having opinions it's about the way someone states them. The initial comment was intended to be insulting, not valid criticism, and I feel Suspy responded accordingly.

I was about to say something on those lines. If we can't have counter arguments then the forum will be a series of non connected opinions. It's about the intention and the intention there was to say that Collecta and Safari are far inferior to Papo. If you don't like those brands is good but what we should try to do is not unfairly undermine other companies to show our love for one.

I have already made myself clear that my intention was not to diminish the works of Safari and CollectA, but to simply state that I prefer Papo. And to those that have said it, I know what an opinion is and I am able to listen to differing opinions, unlike some in this thread.

I own a few Papo (likely more than I own of CollectA or [extinct] Safari ltd.) and they are definitely not more detailed. If they look more detailed that's just because they use more washes in their paint applications (and frankly they put a lot more effort into their stock photos). Additionally, some Papo figures detail (the Tyrannosaurus for example) is incredibly repetitive and distracting, and takes away from the overall appeal of the piece.

I kind of see where you are coming from but not really.

Exactly what component of Papo is contributing towards them appearing 'statuesque' or maquette like if it isn't the detail? I don't think the wash is the only element that gives the models a distinctive Papo-esque look. Surely, there is something else there.

Quite frankly (regardless of accuracy or...detail?), Papo models tend to display better in curio cabinets.

Papo models tend to 'pop' more in a collection. Whenever I have people over my house and they glance at my collection....they automatically assume the Papo models are more accurate. Of course, they are not specialists; they are merely spectators. Regardless, Papo models have a distinctive quality about them. I think this attribute alone tends to miff paleontologists and makes them less likely to juxtapose their Papo figures in tandem with ones from other lines.

To be honest I understand why people find Papo theropods more impressive and I do think they are a bit above in the details comparing to other brands, but I personally find their herbivores unremarkable I  comparison to their theropods and most other brands recent figures . Exception to that is Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus.

Papo needs more herbivores. They were doing great with the ceratopsians but didn't follow through...they need more hadrosaurs (hopefully, not on steroids) and an updated  Stegosaurus. Also, a Kentrosaurus would be a perfect model for Mr. Seo.

I agree that his original comment wasn't valid criticism, but I don't see how his original post...

Quote from: indominus on December 15, 2017, 06:37:48 PMSo excited for the Iguanodon! Have been waiting for it for years. All the models look really detailed, but as for the Amargasaurus? It looks like a CollectA or Safari Ltd model. I can't believe Papo could make such as atrocity while keeping the detailed standards for the other figures. I hope they change it.

...is meant to insult any company. There is only a minor indication that he even hates CollectA or Safari Ltd in that post. All that I can (definitively) prove about the poster is that he prefers Papo to CollectA and Safari Ltd.

I would love to see more herbivores, even if the Iguanodon is on steroids I still think the body looks pretty good, also an adult Pachycephalosaurus is something that I think they can do well.

I agree. Although they did very well last year bringing out three brilliant figures, the Acrocanthosaurus, Ceratosaurus and Cryolophosaurus, they need to focus on herbivores now. The Iguanodon is a long-awaited addition to the line, and the therizinosaurus will be a great figure (albeit in an awkward pose), after that the should continue with their streak of 4+ models a year instead of just two like  in 2015. Overall they are moving in the right direction.

Well he called the figure an atrocity before saying it looks like a CollectA/Safari, most people understood that like he was saying CollectA/Safari figures are atrocities. He may be calling it an atrocity compared to the other Papo figures, but it came across like I said before.

I'll just clear this up now, I did not join the forum to cause arguments but to simply integrate with people who shares the same interests with me, in this case, dinosaur figurines. I was calling it an atrocity compared to other Papo models, and although it looked like it, I did not intend to degrade CollectA/Safari. I hope this can clear everything up.

First off, I corrected a minor wrong statement in your post.

Also, after he calls the Amargasaurus an atrocity, he says "while keeping the detailed standards for other figures", which suggests that he is saying that it is an atrocity for a Papo.

In short, the point about the figure looking like a CollectA/Safari is almost/completely a separate point from him saying that it is an atrocity.

Their figures do have a lot of character.  A lot of the models are frozen in a snapshot of them reacting to something else in their environment.  They're not just serenely walking or roaring/calling.  They're displaying, or crouching, or making threat displays etc.  (well, probably except that compy)

Also, their features (skin flaps, feathers, scales) are exaggerated.  We've had long discussions in the forum where the scales should not be visible for some of the creatures given their size, and I'm inclined to agree.  But one thing I learned from painting scale models is that sometimes you have to exaggerate certain features to make them interesting to the eye.  And to untrained eyes, Papo figures would appear quite pleasing indeed.

As a point of comparison, the Safari Diplodocus (one of my favorite figures) seems very accurate, but since there aren't a lot of skin flaps/folds, exposed veins, detailed scales, it tends to look quite plain.

Yep, I think this is pretty much solved, and hopefully no one comes after indominus for that anymore so it's really settled. And thank you for the correction, I mix before and after sometimes when I'm thinking and typing fast, mostly because the spanish word for before is "antes" and since after begins with A they mix up in my mind.

One last thought before I leave this thread for now: I hope Iguanodon and Therizinosaurus sell like hot bread so Papo will keep making hervibores in coming years.

I'll leave this topic alone as well to focus on greater pursuits  :)
