hello everyone. decided to have a go at my first figure customization. after thinking it through, i decided that the first figure i was going to change up will be the CollectA diplodocus. in spite of it being an awesome sculpt, it has it's fair share of hiccups. from printing out a skeletal of the actual animal and comparing it to the figure i found that the figures lackluster features are

-shrink wrapped body
-body too bulky
-neck too short
- head too small
- limbs too robust
- limbs too long

along worth correcting that, i also wanted to change the pose of the figure.instead of rearing up, i wanted the figure to be in a walking pose, showing off the graceful build and impressive length

i started out by dipping the neck and tail into boiling water in order to straighten them out. it after a few minutes, i gotten the tail and neck to be angled in a more horizontal position. i used a lighter for good measure to really straighten out some of the kinks in the plastic. i then started  thinning out the model. i got rid of the obnoxious shoulder protrusions on the body and thinned out the body. a lot of what is seen will be covered in epoxy clay, so i don't really worry about getting rid of the scale details of the sculpt. i then cut off the hind leg and cut off the excess plastic from underneath to get rid of the sprawled gate. once done, i took the severed limb and shortened it to the length seen by the reference i'm using. i then glues the limb back onto the figure in a different position. angled far forward and indicative of a walking position. i then did the same to the front limb. i now have everything glues and getting ready to do everything to the other side

It's looking very good, I look forward to see the final result.

Greatly improved posture, I look forward to seeing more.  :)

I am excited to see what the finished product will look like!

Nice idea and work... am curious about the final stage. Are you goin' to keep the colors or change it completly?

spinosaurus1

thanks everyone for the interest. the alterations is going by smoothly as of now.

haven't thought that far into it tbh. i might make a more well applied version of the original paint scheme, but i'm not opposed to just giving it another one as well. will think about it thoroughly when the time comes.

i have now extender the neck. it's really starting to look like a double beamed lizard :)
originally, i started working on the other side of the body, but unfortunatly my power drill batery ran out. so i decided to work on the neck while i have it charging.

i cut the neck in half and glued some wire in between the two cut. extending the neck to the appropriate length. i then used some magic sculpt to fill in between the two pieces. after letting it set and a little bit of sanding, i gotten it to look fairly seamless in the transition, though more work does need to be done to it.

Good job, but I don't think it's up to scale.

Thanks, though would you mind elaborating? Up to scale with what exactly?

more work on the diplodocus. just need to glue all the limbs in place and  i can start sculpting over it.

in the meantime, i actually been practicing with two other figures i recently gotten in my collection. figured that they would be the perfect figures to use to try out Greenstuff. it's my first time using it and thus far, i really like it :)

paintingdinos

I love the head details thus far on the Allo and Rex. Can't wait to see them all finished!

Green stuff is working fine for you, those changes (improvements actually) look great.

spinosaurus1

more progress on the tyrannosaurus and allosaurus

the tyrannosaurus now has wrinkles, folds, and scales along a good portion of the body. all the while, i am really learning both the strengths and the weaknesses of green stuff. overall, i am really liking how this is turning out.

with the allosaurus, i decided to try out another epoxy clay that i wanted to use. tan, magic sculpt. i used the epoxy mixture+ a little bit of polymer clay to apply and detail the neck. i REALLY like using this clay. can't wait to use more of it.

I have some questions, whats the green stuff? Is it just green putty? And also does it stick well to the figure?
Sorry, I'm just planning to customise some figures too.

no problem. green stuff is a two part modeling epoxy that is perfect for customizing figures. it has a decent work time before curing and sticks perfectly to figures. i really recommend it if your wanting something to customize figures.
