Hi, with the discussion on Dynamoterror and Sarahsaurus, it led me to thinking about dinosaurs with silly names. You can vote for as many as you want. You don't have to vote for the ones you think are silliest, just ones you really like if you want. I just thought it would be a fun poll.
Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, Archaeopteryx, Cetiosaurus, Compsognathus, Hadrosaurus, Brontosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Albertosaurus, Herrerasaurus, Stenonychosaurus, Deinonychus, Maiasaura, Carnotaurus, Baryonyx, Argentinosaurus, Sinosauropteryx, Microraptor, Citipati, Mei, Tianyulong, Kulindadromeus, Zhenyuanlong, Yutyrannus, Borealopelta, Caihong

Maybe add Megapnosaurus to the poll?  That is the dinosaur name I find silliest/worst/I despise the most.  I can't understand why some people support using that name.

Another silly one is Oviraptor.

IrritatorRaji

Some of the names on this list are actually fine, I don't find them weird in the slightest. Names like Achillobator, Anatotitan, Sinraptor, and Lycorhinus are fine.

And because I'm biased as hell, Irritator is a cool name.

I will add Megapnosaurus. Also Oviraptor is silly, something about its 'classic-ness' kept it off the list, but I will add it to the pot.

Anatotitan is there because it means giant duck, which is what makes it silly. The other three due to how they sound. Achillobator sounds like like 'a-kill-o-bait-er' or a' kill o bater. Sinraptor sounds like a raptor has sinned, and without the 'o' it just doesn't flow and sticks out on the tongue to me at least. Lycorhinus is 'like-a'rhinos' to me.
Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, Archaeopteryx, Cetiosaurus, Compsognathus, Hadrosaurus, Brontosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Albertosaurus, Herrerasaurus, Stenonychosaurus, Deinonychus, Maiasaura, Carnotaurus, Baryonyx, Argentinosaurus, Sinosauropteryx, Microraptor, Citipati, Mei, Tianyulong, Kulindadromeus, Zhenyuanlong, Yutyrannus, Borealopelta, Caihong

Raptorex, Dracorex and Yi are some that I would add but I already voted anyway.

Thanks, avatar_Gothmog the Baryonyx @Gothmog the Baryonyx! :D  I have to say, it felt good to vote for these and some of the others in the poll, as this allowed me to express my disapproval for them! ;D

I guess to an extent it's a matter of personal opinion.  For example, I find Achillobator, Sinraptor and Supersaurus all fine.  Sinraptor and Supersaurus can be funny to think about, but I don't find them silly.  Anatotitan though I do think is silly, as the animal the name was given to doesn't really resemble a duck at all.  As for Irritator, clearly, our feelings about that name differ... I voted for it and think it's a waste of a name. :P :))

And Fukuivenator. I omitted all 4 for a reason (though I'm not sure why), and I can't add them now.

Pantydraco currently in the lead... says something about the maturity of those who voted, including me lol  ;D
"Just think about it... Ceratopsids were the Late Cretaceous Laramidian equivalent of todays birds of paradise. And then there's Sinoceratops..."

I'm reminded of something I saw in a Google Images search for Fukuivenator :)):

(Er, I'm not sure if I should say language warning)

A lot of dinosaurs names sound funny just because english speakers misspell them with a wrong pronunciation ..  >:D
Dinosaurs' names are in Latin language.
Latin right pronunciation is different from "english-latin" weird pronunciation.  O:-)
It's just like a French, Italian, German or Spanish guy speaking English with his native pronunciation.  :-[

Just try to click on the loudspeaker to hear the right latin pronunciation of some names..  ;)

(Latin on the left / English on the right)

avatar_RobinGoodfellow @RobinGoodfellow, I haven't been pronouncing Oviraptor and "Fukui" like the English pronunciations you linked to.

For Oviraptor, I think it's a silly name because of it's meaning: "Egg plunderer", given since it was thought to be preying on the eggs it was found with.  The species part of its name is even worse, "philoceratops" meaning "lover of ceratopsians" given because it was assumed the eggs belonged to Protoceratops.  Study of nesting Citipati specimens with the same type of egg showed the eggs found with Oviraptor most likely belonged to Oviraptor, and the Oviraptor was brooding its eggs and not feeding on them.  It was presumptuous to give Oviraptor that name, and unfortunately it has led to that silly name being used for the larger groups "Oviraptorosauria" and "Oviraptoridae".  Also, the meaning of both parts of "Oviraptor philoceratops" are aggressively obvious, I find they force me to acknowledge their meaning.  The person who named Oviraptor even acknowledged the name might be misleading, and that is exactly what ended up happening.

Not all are concocted from Latin - Greek can also be involved (sometimes Latinised), e.g. "Tyrannosaurus", "Lythronax".  Even "dinosaur" is merely a Latinised version of Greek, but it isn't actually Latin itself.  And of course Chinese is an important element these days - e.g. Mei long.

..yes, of course, and the ancient Greek' pronunciation is even more different from "English" one..
:)

And of course how 19th century Brits like Owen or Mantell would have themselves pronounced the Greek/Latin names they gave to their discoveries would bear no relationship to accurate "original" pronunciation.

Neosodon

Lourinhanosaurus. For a predatory therapod it would be hard to come up with a less awe or fear inspiring name than that.

"3,000 km to the south, the massive comet crashes into Earth. The light from the impact fades in silence. Then the shock waves arrive. Next comes the blast front. Finally a rain of molten rock starts to fall out of the darkening sky - this is the end of the age of the dinosaurs. The Comet struck the Gulf of Mexico with the force of 10 billion Hiroshima bombs. And with the catastrophic climate changes that followed 65% of all life died out. It took millions of years for the earth to recover but when it did the giant dinosaurs were gone - never to return." - WWD

Actually most of these don't bother me. Pantydraco does sound silly (and is begging to be ridiculed) so I'll go with that one.
