I like the movie, but like the Kracken, I'm not a 100% sure it fits my collection?

..of course.. I'm starting a little Harryhausen section but my main problem is where I could display them because of their giant size.. next week will be about Ikea I suppose..  ::)

I got a free Ymir which was included with the Sony Harryhausen dvd set many years ago.

The Ymir resembles the Kraaken, and it also resembles Harryhausen's Martian in his proposed THE WAR OF THE WORLDS.

Wish we had an Ikea down here..well maybe. lol I visited one in Pennsylvania seems the kind of place I would spend way too much if there often lol

A Harryhausen section eh? Might be good for the monsters..since I do love monsters. Which I forgot, Medusa should be in there later.

I know sometimes they reused parts and ideas. I need to finish reading that book on Harryhausen I picked up.

BLADE-OF-THE-MOON:

Here is Harryhausen's Martian from THE WAR OF THE WORLDS----notice its "cat's whiskers" mouth also found on the Ymir and the Kraken.

Also, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is one of my favorite Harryhausen movies, but the original script had the island inhabited by dinosaurs and man-eating plants. But when director Cy Endfield (ZULU) was hired, he got rid of the dinosaurs and replaced them with the giant bee, crab, etc. I think the movie's original script with Harryhausen dinosaurs would have been a much better movie because Harryhausen's dinosaurs look cool. Endfield's big bee is still a bee and a big crab is still a crab---they are boring compared to Harryhausen dinosaurs.

Cool, it does look very similar.

That would easily given it more appeal had they kept the dinosaurs.  We did get a terror bird at least..the big chicken.

MYSTERIOUS ISLAND trivia:

Beth Rogan, who played Michael Callan's prim-and-proper English girl love interest, was in real life a jet-setter and notorious husband-stealer. When she died at old age, it was discovered she was growing marijuana in her house.

The giant crab was a real live crab---Harryhausen bought it, cooked it, and he and his crew ate it. He then used the crab's shell to put his mechanics inside to animate it.

lol I've heard that bit about the crab before, it makes sense, I mean why sculpt it when you can use what nature already provided. And it worked.

Good luck with IKEA, I was there just last week and everything was temporarily unavailable.

TRIVIA---character actor Bart Braverman appeared in two giant monster movies: Ray Harryhausen's 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH and John Sayles's ALLIGATOR.
In 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH, Braverman (as Bart Bradley) played Pepe, the little Sicilian boy who recovers the Venusian Ymir egg which hatches and grows into a monster that terrorizes Rome. In ALLIGATOR, Braverman played obnoxious tabloid journalist Thomas Kemp who breaks the news that a giant alligator is killing people in Chicago's sewers.

So I bit the bullet and added some more of these to my monster collection. I actually hope they keep making more, there are a lot they could do.

Did anyone else get the Deluxe Version of the Cyclops and notice the figures of Sinbad and the sailor are way scaled up?

:)

ugh...  It's kind of annoying. I don't know what to do with them? They also aren't near as detailed as they should be for this scale, were they smaller you could overlook it.

dragon53

Anyone have an idea on what scale the Rhedosaurus is?

I believe it's close to 1/1 with the original model?  If you mean in film, I've no idea that would take a little figuring lol

OT, but Joe Laudati is taking preorders for a Struthiomimus and Eohippus from Gwangi, only 50.00 each with 16.00 for shipping.  You can paypal him at : [email protected]   He's casting them now.

I think they will go well with Gwangi.

BLADE-OF-THE-MOON:

I bought the color Rhedosaurus without the car diorama. I'm thinking of possibly adding a model car to mine for my own diorama, so I'm wondering what scale the Rhedosaurus is so I can find a car model in the same scale.

I remember the original PR photos showed an imaginary figure outline next to the Rhedosaurus model, but no scale is listed on the box or anywhere that I've seen.

BLADE-OF-THE-MOON:

How long is the wrecked car on the Rhedosaurus diorama?.......that might help me determine its scale.

It's about 3".  I swear I don't think Star Ace much cares about scale. They made the humans on the Cyclops base way too big, they don't even fit on the base anymore, so  I wouldn't use an image they provided to figure it out.

BLADE-OF-THE-MOON:

Thanks for the info.

Based on an outtake from the movie below, the Rhedosaurus' foot is about 4.2" long and the car is about 8.5", so the car is twice as long as the foot. Therefore, the Star Ace Rhedosaurus foot is about 2" long and the car model should be about 4" long normally, but since it has been stepped on and compressed, your 3" car is correct.
I found a car model that is 1/43 scale and about 5" long, so I may get it for my own diorama. I looked for a 1/43 cop figure similar to the cop eaten in the movie, but as I expected, I couldn't find one in a long coat like in the movie.

Blade-of-the-Moon

I think the scale does vary a bit in the film as well.

Did you try Shapeways? there was a store on there with a huge selection and i think it said they would take custom orders?

Your measurements for the car are off by quite a lot. Even a 1960's MINI Cooper is 10 feet long.

Taking a typical car of that style, shape and age, the '38 Chevrolet Sedan we get a length of 15.6 feet. Yes, it's not the exact car, but we can see that it's much closer for estimating purposes.

I would say the width of the door on the car is near 4 feet, or even the height of the parking meter.

Either way, that would make the foot of the Rhedosaurus much larger than 4.2 feet long.
