Who's got better eyes than me? I think there are some unpainted K&M Hadrosaurs in here, but I'm not confident enough in that to spend $60 on a maybe- and it feels weird to message the seller going "hey can you compare this enter 200 piece lot to this website and tell me if they're the same or not?"

(No, Reuben, I haven't found any ichthyosaurs yet. Still keeping my eye out for ya!)

Saber and Paleoscincus scanned at the Library's (new!) 3D scanner, results pending as they have to process and email them to me.

3 T-rex jetballs distributed to wide-eyed small children fascinated by the tiny dinosaurs and one gleeful adult. Feels good to be Santa.

This is a post I'd been holding off of out of a (possibly well-founded) superstition that every time I count my sinosauropteryx before they've hatched, something always goes terribly wrong.

I found a K&M Mini Brachiosaurus. And, despite literally fainting from the adrenaline rush involved in the bidding war, I managed to acquire her. This is one of my Big Time Dinos, that I've wanted ever since I lost my first one, so I've been unimaginably excited for weeks now. And the box arrived yesterday.

Damaged.

And admittedly, that's not really severe damage, but at about the size of a quarter, that's more than big enough to lose a K&M mini on the trip from West England to the East Coast. So I was documenting the damage, wondering what I was going to tell the Ebay seller, and I took out the dinosaurs to count my losses.

Despite it all, despite the trip and the damage and my general bad luck, she's finally here. I could not be happier.

(I've still got three more of my childhood minis to find, so Reuben, I'll still be watching out for your ichthyosaurus!)

Lanthanotus

My congratulations to you for acquirng your "holy grail". I do not know the line, but its a cute little sauropod :)

My congratulations on your newest acquisition, it is a lovely and fun dinosaur miniature.

Another day, another post.

Firstly, I found something real interesting while on the hunt for my grail minis (and Reuben's ichthyosaurus, which I have not yet found).

There are some awfully familiar molds in there! But, I actually think these predate K&M's mini line. In fact, they actually resemble the large lot of minis posted by profnik back on page three, though that set lacked stamps and had more variety. (note for reuben: that large lot lacked the ichthyosaurus, so I don't know if there was ever an ichthyosaurus stamp)

And, it looks like those stampers molds have been used a lot more recently, too: check out the neon plastic on these guys!

Which brings me to the second part of this post.

Captain Pterry returns, at long last. I couldn't be happier. That makes him the second one found out of four.

profnik

That's great 😀. you found the k&m mini pteranodon from 2 days ago. An K&M's mini line that I heard with vintage dinosaurs minis with stamps. I was I could find the tiny smilodon with painted orange and white, pteranodon and Tylosaurus to complete collection.

I don't have any leads on smilodon (well, I have my own smilodon and I'm working on cleaning up his scan to publish a 3D model of him for free, but you know how it is with educational software licenses- it's slow going!) and we're both looking for tylosaurus, but for pteranodon there's a listing of the stampers version that might be the same material despite being unpainted.

After some historical research (bothering ebay sellers and their contacts), I return with some history of the molds.

Ankylosaurus, Brontosaurus, Cynognathus, Hadrosaurus, Iguanodon, Parasaurolophus, Polacanthus, Pteranodon, and Stegosaurus all started out as STAMPALS molds. Dimetrodon and Triceratops are very close to the original STAMPALS molds as well, but were bent slightly (for reasons unknown to me). The final STAMPALS mold, Protoceratops, bears no real resemblance to the K&M Minis Protoceratops. STAMPALS are not painted, and are made of harder plastic than the K&M Prehistoric Minis. The molds-with-stamps appear time-to-time as various hard plastic stamps by various party favor places. Interestingly, there are two of the STAMPALS that show up as part of the kaiju molds that oriental trading company sells as dinosaur eggs- Hadrosaurus again, and the original STAMPALS Protoceratops.

From the K&M lot, there seems to be molded-but-unpainted lots that show up in warehouses from time to time. I've confirmed with the sellers that they're the same material as the K&M stuff. Interestingly, of the ones I've seen, Ichthyosaurus (sorry Reuben) and Tylosaurus are never present. That raises questions, but neither I nor the ebay sellers have had answers to them. K&M International has not responded to my emails asking if the sets of eight were consistent throughout the run, nor why they chose which molds for which sets of eight. That being said, my set of eight was Brachiosaurus, Dimetrodon, Palaeocincus, Polacanthus, Protoceratops, Pteranodon, Smilodon, and Tylosaurus, whereas the instagram post depicts a different set of eight.

Post-K&M (sort of, as K&M sold these themselves for a while), we see Ankylosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Dimetrodon, Hadrosaurus, Igunaodon, Pachycephalosaurus, Palaeoscincus, Parasaurolophus, Polacanthus, Steogaurus, Triceratops, and Tyrannosaurus appear as jetballs. This holds true today, with various companies selling these molds in jetballs or jet eggs- but, interestingly, never outside of them. K&M International has not responded to my emails asking why these particular figures of their line-up were chosen for the jetballs.

This leads us to the enigma of microllector (who also has not responded to me). They're clearly recasts of varying quality, they look like they might be eraser rubber or maybe silicone, and they include every mold of the K&M figurines except the oldest and most common, Hadrosaurus. Were these actually being sold by a company? Were they pirated? What's up with that?

Anyways, this concludes a brief history of K&M Prehistoric Minis and the molds they arose from. Back to scouring Ebay.

profnik

:-\ I have been looking for the K&M purple mini suitcase with the prehistoric set of figurines. Has anyone ever seen one for sale?

Found an ankylosaurus in the wild, for those looking for one (or, you know, I still have like three entrapped within bouncy balls that might be cheaper for folks in the US).

tinyvinyldinos

I have made an intriguing find!

Someone is currently selling K&M mini bounce balls. Problem: I have no idea what the full catalogue is. Problem two: I'm not buying 90 of them to find out. I've done my time in jet ball hell.

If anyone here is brave (or foolish) enough to buy jet balls in bulk to find out their options, though, I'd love to hear about it!
