A new interesting diorama 8)
Actually, this oozaru, which means "huge monkey" in Japanese, conveys a bit some on-steroid monsters of Biohazard video game ;)

Quote from: Justin_ on April 06, 2025, 08:47:10 PMWhere did you get the Japanese city buildings? Have you got any pictures that give an idea of their actual size?

The buildings are all Japanese N-Scale (1/150) model railroad scenery. US N-Scale (1/200) and Euro N-scale (1/160) model railroad scenery will also work with 25cm and 30cm Kaiju figures. You can also find many buildings in 1/144 scale. I have buildings from Kato, Tomy-Tec and Tomix, which are some of the bigger names in Japanese model railroading. I ordered most of them from Hobby Search, a Japanese retailer (https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/rail). You can also find many of them on Amazon. Most of these companies are also selling these buildings for use in tabletop wargaming, so a search using those terms should also work.

A word of caution: I stick with the pre-assembled buildings for the most part, because the kits I have built have been unholy pains-in-the-arse to build.

My tallest buildings are 10 inches, give or take, and they range down to 4 inches or so. In some of the photos I'm actually cheating building heights by putting them on risers for effect.

Here is an image of one of the set ups for an image I posted above. You can see the buildings up on risers to give them some extra height.

You inspired me with your dioramas. So I ordered a bunch of buildings. Which trees do you use? Did you had to glue them?
How about a base and the background (sky and clouds and so)?
Thanks a lot!

I don't use a base, everything is temporary, so I can move things around and set up different scenarios. I do put down some grey matting board (find in the 'framing' area of your crafty store) as my "streets".

The trees I got at my local craft/hobby retailer, they are N-Scale model railroad scenery trees, and I buy them in bags of 12 or 24. There is some assembly, putting the bases on the little tree trunks, but no gluing. The foliage is already on the branches.

The sky background is "Bulletin Board Paper", which you should be able to find in a craft/hobby store, or perhaps office supply store. Look for the "teacher supplies", as they use the paper to decorate classrooms. I bought a 4 foot wide -by- 12 foot long roll of blue sky with clouds for $20 six years ago. I mounted a 5-foot section of it to some foamcore board, so I don't have to worry about folds, or wrinkles. When it gets too tattered to use, I still have 7 more feet more on the roll, and I'll just make another one. It is a bit spendy, but it looks really good in the pictures, so IMO it has given me value for my money.

You might want to check out this video. It's a little dry, but it drops some really great info.

Here is the very first Kaiju toy picture I ever took, and the set up for it. As you can see, there's not much to it. I used the backdrop from the packaging the toy came in for the Fuji shot, a few model railroad trees, two lights, one on either side, and my phone! Editing was done with MS Paint, to crop the image. That's it!

Here's the set up...

... and the cropped, final image.

I can't wait to see what you capture!
