Dilo’s general paleoart

I'm currently trying to learn paleoart, and I thought I'd start posting some of what I do here. This one was meant to be a quick sketch but honestly it turned into probably my best piece yet.

It's nowhere near perfect (you can tell I really struggled on the legs) but I'm really happy with how it turned out. I may try and scan it and finish it up on my pc but that's for later. It's not meant to be any particular species as it was unreferenced, but it was vaguely inspired by Rugops. The style was also heavily inspired by ZHAO Chuang's pnso drawing guides.

Made some changes to the skull so it looks more like rugops, and some changes to the overall body cause I realized he looked a little malnourished lol.

Looks good, keep it up! The updated skull is an improvement.

I see you are working on putting an organic shape in a box so you can rotate it in perspective. That's a very good skill to develop. If I may, I would also suggest "drawing through", meaning that in the early stages of your drawing you think about and indicate where things are on the far side of the animal (especially things like hip and shoulder joints, and the hidden parts of limbs). This is a big help in getting things lined up properly. These are two skills I wish I had spent more time on when I was starting on my drawing journey. Heck, I should probably be practicing them now!

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely agree on drawing through, as if you look at the right leg of the dinosaur, and follow the upper leg, it doesn't line up with the hips in the slightest lol. Definitely redoing the legs at some point.

WIP sculpt of an Orkoraptor burkei. This is my third attempt at the wrinkles, but I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out!

The wrinkles are finished, now to learn zbrush and do the scales!

Fortunately not yet. I am afraid that it will not be long until KI will be able to produce deep fakes of any sort of art and undermine the human creativity with their distorted images of true art.

Thought I'd share this very early wip of an Elaphrosaurus model, my first ever done fully from scratch!

Well, it's certainly been a bit since I posted here, and since I made a piece really, but here we go! I'm still very much in the early learning phase when it comes to shading, but I think I'm progressing nicely. This is a Dubreuillosaurus portrait made for a family friend who's currently visiting us from France!

I definitely speedran this one somewhat lol, I finished it in a single afternoon.

I discovered this thread late, but I'm loving what I'm seeing here! The Orkoraptor turned out great, and nice colors on that Dubreuillosaurus!

Been a bit but I decided to reconstruct Aletopelta, feedback welcome!

Mind if I use this as a reference for when I sculpt an aletopelta? This looks wonderful and is one of the few good pieces of paleoart for this species, ankylosaurs are unfortunately neglected.

Not at all, that was kinda the point actually lol, there really aren't any good refs out there so I thought I'd make my own.

Thankyou, pity there aren't better resources than the ones we have to make ourselves.

I've decided to do a series of West Cost dinosaurs, so here's Labocania restored as a carcharodontosaurid!
