Quote from: Giganotosaurus on October 01, 2024, 04:33:57 AMNice! Which sauropod should be next? I'd like a Hammond Collection Apatosaurus! As long as they don't make it smaller like with their Hammond Collection Brachiosaurus (unless that's more realistic to scale).

I don't think the HC Brachio is smaller, it's a more detailed and refined sculpt. Honestly it, the Dreadnoughtus and the Diplodocus are probably the best ones made.  I'm not sure what they could do next and stay in canon. An HC Apato would be a great upgrade. Maybe there be a new large sauropod in the new film?   A male JP3 Brachio is a possibility too.  I never in a million years did  I ever think we would get ONE giant sauropod in a Jurassic line, much less 6 now.  I'm pretty shocked to say the least.

avatar_Blade-of-the-Moon @Blade-of-the-Moon I share the same thoughts. Actually left a comment on D @Dino Scream3232 review of this figure about the same point.

Back in 2018 it wasn't even certain something like the Brachiosaurus, let alone any of the others would ever be made for the line. It was such a surprise when the Brachiosaurus was revealed back at SDCC then to be releasing in 2019. Mattel have truly outdone themselves in continuing to deliver this many quality large sauropod figures like no company before them (there have been some, but never this many from one company).

Exactly. Previously my largest sauropods were the DinoRiders Brontosaurus and the Definitely Dinosaurs Ultrasaurus.  I recall Mattel had said they had pitched the idea to Universal and they were against it. Saying, like playsets, they wouldn't sell. If it took Target to get this done I'm ok with it.  At least they exist so not impossible for everyone to find.   I really don't know what is left on my wishlist? 1:1 Compy, Super Colossal Pyroraptor and Spinosaurus?  Perhaps one day the playsets will be attempted again.  I do hold out hope that someday DinoRiders will get a re-release with a company this involved and this successful.

I wouldn't be surprised if the reason Mattel doesn't do anything with DinoRiders is because of cannibalism concerns with Jurassic.

Get a movie or a cartoon series behind and double dip.

Next big sauropod from Mattel?  I vote for Patagotitan, Argentinosaurus or Alamosaurus.   Time for a six footer.  ;)   The big Mattel sauropods sell great....they are almost always the first Mattel dinos to sell out at TRU.

If the above sauropods are not canon, so be it.  It's my understanding that Diplodocus isn't either, other than a model on a shelf in somebody's office in one of the movies.  And i can't believe all the obscure dino releases from Mattel are all canon?  So if they are not, why do the big sauropods need to be?  Keep 'em coming, Mattel.

While I agree, and wouldn't be surprised if Mattel did too, I doubt Universal would allow that to happen.

If Mattel ever lost the JP license though I hope having DR would let them just keep on trucking, maybe even with retooled pre-existing sculpts.

As for big sauropods, I am happy with my Brachiosaurus, Dreadnaughtus, and soon Diplodocus, I feel like they fill in the general archetypes I'd want in a large sauropod. I was not a fan of the Apatosaurus and sold mine years ago, and the Mamenchisaurus just felt a little too disproportionate for me, so the Diplodocus looking as good as it does is a relief after Mamenchisaurus felt a lot more cartoonish.

I would rather large creatures focus somewhere else for a while and circle back to sauropods later (maybe with more Hammond Collection versions), a 1:1 Compy, Mononykus, Baby Blue, Baby Pteranodon, etc.

I'd love to own Ceratosuchops and Kryptops (um...they rhyme? Is this rhyme?), but I'm gonna wait for clearance prices, like I'm doing with the ones that are currently out. Jakapil and Lophostropheus have to be bought on sight.

Speaking of bought on sight, I have a surplus of Rauisuchus in my area, if anyone can't find them. They are extremely common. Chasmosaurus is the rarest one, and not impossible to find, Both of my closest Walmarts have them.

I'm tempted by both as well, though not a huge fan of the permanent battle damage. Made the mistake of purchasing the Wave 1 JWD figures at full price, so definitely not doing that ever again, 100% waiting on the inevitable discounts. That being said, I am pivoting to focusing on the Hammond Collection rather than the main line... Skipped Majungasaurus "Major" in hopes of a more screen accurate one in the premium line.

The two small ones are instant purchases for me too. Strangely enough the (non-repack) small figures tend to fly off shelves while the larger figures shelf warm for ages. A shame they didn't do a two-pack with the Jakapil though. It's odd seeing a small species in such a large scale. Lophostropheus seems to suffer from the Rugops syndrome of having a monocrest rather than paired ones, likely due to the sculptor only referencing side profiles of the animal.

EmperorDinobot

Yep. Small dinos are shelfwarming here, which is fine by me, but it is not the same in every area.
I don't buy these dinosaurs for accuracy. I'm in this for the long run, unfortunately. I can't stop.

Faelrin

avatar_Flaffy @Flaffy I did not realize that about the Lophostropheus. Watching a review confirmed as such. How sad lol.

I'm behind on quite a number of the larger figures from the past 2 years, from prioritizing the smaller figures for the most part, and a limited budget to work with over that time (at least Elasmosaurus, Diabloceratops, Nigersaurus, and like all the Wild Roar from this year).

Blade-of-the-Moon

Received the Kryptops yesterday. I don't mind the battle damage on it, these guys are looking like David Krentz had some input based on his Sideshow Rex Veteran lol  I do think they are still refining the teeth as these look better than even the last releases.

Lophostropheus is only known from fragmentary pelvic and vertebral elements AFAIK. Which is enough qualification to be made into a toy by Mattel, but currently neither the double or single crested interpretation is more accurate than the other.

Calling it now that there's a Chuandongocoelurus, Chilantaisaurus and Fosterovenator in the works from Mattel.

Gonna wait for a repaint of the other Atrociraptors. "Ghost" for me is the least interesting colour scheme out of the four.

Still hoping they'll redo the JP raptor with these new updated proportions.

I don't believe any coelophysoid has been recovered to have a singular midline crest like Monolophosaurus or Proceratosaurids. So depicting Lophostropheus with a single crest is inherently more speculative in that regard.

Still, it's very easy to rationalise the sculpt by treating it as a soft tissue comb rather than a hard bony structure.

crazy8wizard

I wonder if the single crest is similar to what happened with Collecta's Liliensternus where it's a misinterpretation of short and low dual crests when viewed in profile.
