Jurassic Park Films: Ranked

I thought about doing this in the Jurassic World: Rebirth thread but it seems slightly off topic and deserving of its own thread. The subject is self explanatory, rank the films of the Jurassic franchise. Right now I'm placing Rebirth above Fallen Kingdom but it's close and subject to change. What will never change is Jurassic Park's ranking as number one. None of the others come close to it. While some of the sequels are good dinosaur movies, Jurassic Park is the only one that's both a good dinosaur movie and movie in general, if that makes sense.

Jurassic Park
Jurassic World
Jurassic World: Rebirth
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
The Lost World: Jurassic Park
Jurassic World: Dominion
Jurassic Park 3

I recently watched all the films with my 10 y/o daughter and took her to the theater to see Rebirth. I asked her to rank them and was intrigued by the results. She used a tier list and used letter grades.

Jurassic World: Rebirth (A)
Jurassic World: Dominion (A)
Jurassic Park (B)
Jurassic Park 3 (C)
Jurassic World (D)
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (D)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (F)

Having watched them with her I think she is sincere about her ranking. She really enjoyed Rebirth, Dominion, and JP, didn't care for JW and FK, and was bored to tears by TLW. I do think that seeing it in the theater influenced the ranking for Rebirth.

For me:

Jurassic Park
Jurassic World
The Lost World: Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park 3
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Jurassic World: Dominion

excluded: Jurassic World: Rebirth (haven't seen)

That's exactly how they're ranked on Rotten Tomatoes! Rebirth is between The Lost World and JP3.

A little bit contrarian but I think the only thing that would really raise eyebrows is placing Jurassic Park anywhere but on the top. Which means I have to have a serious conversation with my kid.  ::D

I thought about adding Battle at Big Rock to my list. It was really good! Could have used more short films like that, would have been a fun way to show us some more interactions between dinosaurs and civilization.

1. Jurassic Park
2. The Lost World
3. (tie) Jurassic Park 3
3. (tie) Jurassic World: Rebirth
5. Jurassic World
6. Jurassic World: Dominion
7. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

I hated JW:FK far more than JW:D, probably because they continued with an out-of-control hybrid, the human clone, and releasing the dinosaurs. JW:D merely built off JW:FK's errors, and had a fair amount of action that JW:FK lacked, IMO, with the exception of the locust plot line.

I think the subsequent sequels would have been better if they had followed the two books much more closely in the first two movies.

I'm surprised by this. I seem to recall you thinking highly of JW and JW:FK.
I appreciate Jurassic World for what it did in reviving the franchise, but as an individual movie and as a followup to the first 3 I'm not particularly fond of it. I think a lot of the common complaints about it are often overblown, but I have my own issues with it (mostly with it's character writing). It's only an F by any means relative to the other films in the series, even as my least favorite I'd give it an A or B relative to other films broadly.

JW:FK addresses a lot of the character complaints I had with the first JW so I appreciate it for that, but I don't think it's held up particularly well on rewatches (at least relative to Dominion). It just kind of feels all over the place with pacing that feels a bit off, almost like it and the first act of Dominion might have worked better as a mini series. Dominion relies more heavily on spectacle but it (and JP3) commit heavily enough to that spectacle that I feel it makes them work better on rewatching or as individual movies, whereas JW:FK is a movie I like mostly for the points it fleshes out from the previous movie. I'm not even that bothered by the ending, only by how they went about it.
Spoiler
Owen should have pushed the button, his whole character arc over that and the preceding movie was about learning to take accountability for his choices, it would have worked way better than the forced twist

Gotcha! I don't actually wholly dislike any of the films either, I think they're all fun and they all have their standout sequences. Although I rank Dominion low I have actually enjoyed it more with repeat viewings. I guess the shock of its unexpected plot has worn off.

To some extent I liked most of them for the dinosaurs and action sequences, except JW:FK. It may not make sense to most folks, but I simply despise that film, even after watching it multiple times, lol.
