Car keys, eh? Mightn't be a much worse driver than some of the characters currently on the road.

Found a thought provoking video on YouTube, since I am a little into watches, too:

What if we replace the 'watches' in this video with 'figures/models'? Just a thought I'd like to throw in here.

This is a really thoughtful video, thanks for linking it.

I've been giving this topic a lot of thought lately, too. I'm not into watches, but I am into fountain pens, and I've noticed that spending too much time in collector communities breeds the same kind of purchasing hype. My current solution is building in a waiting period when I want to buy something. I write it down, then wait a few months and see if it's still something I feel strongly about. Seems to work as well for dinosaur toys as it does for fountain pens!

I think this says more about social media than watches or figures or anything else you can collect. Buying a figure for bragging rights on social media is no different for exemple than someone going to an event like a concert for the sake of posting about how they were there rather than for enjoying the event itself. Seeing people spending the whole thing filming rather than enjoying the moment with their senses. Or another example, people playing video games in a way they don't enjoy just so they can have the trophies.

I think this video draws the wrong conclusion: the takeaway shouldn't be to engage less with your passion, but rather engage less with social media. Buying a figure for your own enjoyment is great, buying one for status on an internet community not so much.

Maybe there are people buying stuff for status, which probably does include expensive figures and models. Many people buy things not for the things themselves or because they are needful but for the feeling of owning it. This is a symptom of final stage capitalism.  Another symptom:
Just recently I was on an IRON MAIDEN concert. There were a lot of hardcore fans singing along each and every song and headbanging and stuff. They did not hold a smartphone in their hands at all. Then there were the casual fans who filmed and then there were the idiots who filmed the whole concert and one could hardly call them "fans". The band had kindly asked to enjoy the moment and keep the phones in the pockets, but many visitors did obviously not understand. They filmed as a proof they´ve been there, as a part of a bucket list, whereas my memory about the moment lives in my head.

The video isn't saying that you should engage less with your passion; the video is saying that engaging with your passion doesn't have to mean buying new stuff. He's advocating for taking time to appreciate what you have instead of constantly chasing the dopamine hit of a new purchase.

Applied to dinosaur figures, that could mean spending time creating a new display for your figures, photographing them outside, customizing them, etc.

Yes, you can be a wristwatch enthusiast without buying a new Rolex each week. You can be a palaeo enthusiast without buying an expensive figure each week. There are other creative ways which maybe are even more satisfying than just amassing things.  :)

I don't think dinosaur toys, even high end desk top models, are a status symbol the way fancy watches are. Unless you carry the latest Haolonggood sauropod under your arm when you go out to the bar, I think the collecting mentality is rather different between fashion and figures.

That video is mostly a statement on the mind set of content creators. I did buy more dinos when I was active with my channel than I do now, simply for the content. But I wasn't doing it to show off. I would be surprised if any of us DTF collectors were collecting to impress others!

I agree with avatar_DinoToyForum @DinoToyForum.  I don't collect dinosaur models to impress others.  It's purely to satisfy myself.

Why can't we have ads like this here???

We do.

Would have been funny if they did a mutadon version of this given the scene from Rebirth.

Agreed! I live alone so I don't even have anyone to impress. If anything I may be a bit embarrassed if I were showing a girl my apartment for the first time. It's infested with dinosaurs - walls, shelves, ceiling, desk. Bathroom is the most dinosaur free room with only two of the Pnso skulls on a floating shelf.
Just because I have a short attention span doesn't mean
