I'm pretty sure the Cenozoic series is going to be 1/18 like most of David's series and I assumed that Smilodon would be in that same scale.  The sculpt does look pretty detailed for 1/18.  It would be an odd choice to make it in a larger scale given Rebor''s recent release.  But maybe the BOTC series is going to be a mix of 1/6 and 1/18?

Yeah, at first I was figuring 1/18, but that would result in a pretty small Smilodon, similar to the Safari or CollectA versions, I imagine (I haven't calculated either myself). 1/6 seems more consistent with other Creative Beast products, but who knows.

I would much prefer a Smilodon with an articulated jaw than interchangeable heads. But let us see what unfolds.

In general, I prefer alternate heads to articulated jaws. Articulations are more likely to ruin the contours of the head and neck. But alternate heads would be a little bit odd in the context of an action figure line.

Lots of toy companies do alternate heads now, like Neca, you can get several sometimes. Rebor is another good example as they already have a cat with them.   Some just don't care for jaw articulation I'm ambivalent myself. Maybe it also cost more to produce?

Faelrin

Honestly I'm in favor of the alternate head sculpts.  Another example other then Rebor's (which isn't an action figure anyways, even if most of their figures do have articulated jaws), is the Neca American Werewolf figure I have. It has one head with a closed mouth, and the other with an open mouth. The alternate heads allow greater detail and accuracy to the source material, and although I find articulated jaws fun, this also has the benefit of no seams on the head for those it would bother. In Smilodon's case it would allow better anatomical accuracy, which I think is the point David was trying to make.

Very glad David didn't give it an articulated jaw - they would look so very bad on a mammal.

On a different note, David said in an instagram comment: "it does not have a mane but will come with optional 'neck fur' parts for long or short fur."
This is very interesting, I wonder if he plans to do this with any other future figures?

Sim

David has said the Smilodon will be 1:18 scale.  I'm not sure why exactly people were thinking it would be bigger since it shares its sculpt with the Cyberzoic version and Cyberzoic is in 1:18 scale if I'm remembering right.  Also, David said the Smilodon will definitely have alternate head parts instead of an articulated jaw.

wow that looks exquisite...especially considering the somewhat small size in 1/18 scale.  Being populator, it should have a shoulder height of about 2 3/4 inches (which is a hair over 4 feet in 1/18 scale).  I hope 24 points of articulation don't compromise the quality of the beautiful sculpt.

suspsy

I'm so happy to see a Smilodon with an accurate head and neck at very long last.

Now if only David were to reveal Arctotherium next.

On one hand I shouldn't be surprised at how good the detail is for an intended 1:18 figure (due to how the raptors, etc turned out), but I still am. Glad David is giving folks lots of options to display theirs with. Just wondering what the colorations will be. Also glad to see another S. populator on the market. Rebor's is the only other designated S. populator I know of.

I'll be impressed if the action figure has papillae on the tongue.

Yaaaawn.

Call me when we get primates. Sculpting looks solid though.

I very much hope there will be terror birds in this series.  Terror birds are so awesome!  The one I'd most like is Kelenken.  It's surprising how terror birds are underrepresented in figures.

Thialfi

It's happening, and looking good!

The interchangeable heads look a lot better than a hinged jaw would have!

Agreed! Also, the lower jaw in the closed mouth head does slightly articulate. Looks great.

andrewsaurus rex

looks kinda big for 1/18 scale.  Populator was big, but it wasn't that big.  Nice sculpt though.

Faelrin

A @andrewsaurus rex That's because that one is 1/12 scale. It's for Cyberzoic too. The Beasts of the Cenozoic one will be 1/18 scale.

That reminds me, I am way behind on getting this thread's op updated. I'll have to do that when I get home.

ah, I didn't realize.  I assumed they'd be using the same figure for both series.  Good news, thanks.
