Dilo’s 3d printing adventures

Today I stumbled across a treasure trove of free 3d models of dinosaurs (and pterosaurs) for 3d printing, and decided to try and print a geosternbergia in 1:35. Overall it turned out alright, though there was a quite a bit of stringing and I'll likely reprint it at a slower speed. (I also sadly broke off one of the wingtips right after taking this photo.)

Tomorrow I'll try their Gallimimus (resized to represent struthiomimus), and possibly their austroraptor.

Federreptil

I'm curious to see what happens next here.
3D printing offers great opportunities, but obviously also has its unforeseen difficulties. The first multi-part large figures I printed with my friend were hard to deburr and had imperfections in the surface.

DefinitelyNOTDilo

Here are the results of yesterday's prints! Both of these also turned out fairly well. The first of which is Austroraptor. This guy is my favorite dromaeosaurid and one of my favorite species, so it's great to finally have a chance to have one in my collection!

The next species is a struthiomimus, a hell creek species that is distinctly lacking in good figures. This one is actually just a Gallimimus model scaled down to S. sedens lol. Sadly the struthio's foot broke off while removing the supports, but it shouldn't be too hard to glue back on.

And that's all for now, next I'm thinking of printing a cryodrakon and a Pachyrhinosaurus.

Quiversaurus

It actually makes me so happy to see the Austroraptor and Gallimimus in 1:35 scale. Do you have a 1:35 human by any chance, for comparison?

Keep the prints coming!

Yes but sadly it is unavailable atm for complicated reasons, though I may end up just printing another one.

Quiversaurus

Ah okay, that's alright, I will wait patiently for your uploads (:

Thanks! I'm glad you like em!
This is where I got em if you have a printer and are interested in making some yourself, the cryodrakon should be ready in a few hours.

Thanks for sharing that link. So far they haven't made anything I need, but good to have someone to keep an eye on.

Your images aren't loading for me. Not sure whether the problem is on my end or the image host's.

Odd, they still work for me, have you tried opening them in a seperate tab?

Replace the Mattel Austroraptor ;)

DefinitelyNOTDilo

And here's cryodrakon! Definitely the biggest one I've printed so far, though not for long... ;) Unfortunately I accidentally broke off one of his wings during preparation, but I'm gonna pick up so plastic glue soon and get all the damaged figures repaired.

Ah, images are working now! Must have been a temporary glitch. (And yeah, in the moment a new tab didn't help either!)

Do you plan to paint these?

Heh, this is a nicer Austroraptor. But somebody will make another by and by, I am sure. It's a theropod, after all!

Definitely!

After multiple days and a few failed prints, may I present; Allosaurus! I haven't really been happy with the figures currently on the market, so I decided to print my own. I went with hopefully a more reasonable size estimate, I forget exactly how much, for this one. It still isn't finished, I need to do some cleaning to get the parts to fit better, a bit of filling on the seams, and to replace the claws on his right hand which broke off. I also may reprint the tail with a higher infill as right now it's a little front heavy and has trouble staying upright.

(I also printed out a human as my current 1:35 person is not available atm.)

DefinitelyNOTDilo

Next I'm thinking pachycephalosaurus, Utahraptor, or maybe thalassodromeus, what do you guys think?

Quiversaurus

Can't wait to see that Allo painted up! It looks like a good size.

Utahraptor and Pachy sound great! I haven't aeen a solid 1:35 Utahraptor figure yet...

I'm leaning toward Thalassodromeus!

Concavenator

Austroraptor and Gallimimus, hopefully they will receive good figures someday, even if the scrappiest megatheropod is getting made these days...

Quote from: Halichoeres on October 26, 2023, 01:50:23 PMHeh, this is a nicer Austroraptor. But somebody will make another by and by, I am sure. It's a theropod, after all!

Fingers crossed you will be right! I wouldn't be so sure, first of all, its dromaeosaurid nature is apparently a handicap for being made, since it seems companies actively avoid them. Add to that that it's one of the more unusual dromaeosaurids (theoretically this should be an advantage but in some cases being unusual is apparently a handicap too...) and that it isn't as famous as Velociraptor and Deinonychus. So I wouldn't say it looks good for Austroraptor. Maybe Safari will make one at some point? Or Creative Beast? They're pretty much the only companies that give some (quality) attention to dromaeosaurids off the top of my head.

DefinitelyNOTDilo

So uh, funny story, I ended up doing neither of those lol. Thalasso turned out to be too small and Utah too big. Instead I printed up two others! First is pachycephalosaurus, this guy unfortunately lost an arm in the cleanup process which will need to be glued back on.

And the other was my first quadruped, borealopelta!

These last two were printed several days ago, but irl stuff kept me busy and prevented me from posting them until now, this last one however, just finished printing a couple minutes ago! A life sized Archaeopteryx head! I'm hoping to eventually print the rest, but it will have to be sliced up into several pieces to fit on my printer.

Primeval12

I love the Borealopelta. I can't wait to print my own.
