I couldn't honestly say palaeoart, as half the time I'm too lazy to look up papers (my dyslexia doesn't get on with all that print!) and I'm still learning to draw some areas properly (Theropod legs are my nemesis!  :o). We'll start off with some 'all yesterdays' type doodles I did in a lecture (naughty, naughty Tyto!). I was actually going to link to something better, but DeviantArt decided to be annoying, so it'll have to wait. In other news, I hate my scanner. These'll have to do for now...

From top to bottom, a Dromaeosaurid using a hunting small prey using a method based on an owl (pouncing, bringing down its legs at the last minute to maximise the force with which it hits, when enveloping the prey in its wings - probably unlikely, but it was just an idea); A Spinosaurus based on another aquatic Theropod group, the penguins; And an Alvarezsaur based on a kiwi, with its tiny arms nearly hidden by long, shaggy, fur-like feathers and whiskers on the end of its snout to help it search for its invertebrate prey (this type of animal is what the Dromaeosaurid is supposed to be pouncing on, but that looks nothing like it...)

I like the idea of a waddling spinosaurus.
In the end it was not guns or bombs that defeated the aliens, but that humblest of all God's creatures... the Tyrannosaurus rex.

Are you using digital painting? The colors are very clean and saturated; looks good.

Thanks! Yes, I am indeed using digital painting over pencil lines. I sometimes use traditional colouring methods, but digital always looks better on a computer.

That's true, unless you have a giant scanner like in a cartography library.

Dosing Velociraptor - last night's doodle that turned into something bigger. I don't want to talk too much about the project that inspired this - I'm always chary about things I might actually try and publish in print - but I'd be very happy to discuss Velociraptor mongoliensis, Dromaeosaurid/maniraptor/theropod biology, speculation, the Djadochta Formation, etc. with anyone else interested! ;)

Beautiful! I love seeing dinosaurs in a resting pose and the colours suit it nicely.

Thanks - I do like to show Theropods doing something OTHER than killing stuff! ;) I thought it was a good colour scheme for a desert animal.

Just for the record, I have deactivated my dA for reasons unrelated to DTF or my palaeoart. I may get a new account later, but until then the links will be broken as I have deleted the posts. I will probably post the pics directly to the forum later. I hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone. :-[

The latest addition to the Dromaeosauridae family, Dakotaraptor! I was too excited about the discovery not to draw it, and I wanted to do a colour scheme for a project I'm working on. I used pictures of large birds of prey for inspiration, especially the red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) and booted eagle (Aquila pennatus). She doesn't have as much bright display feathers as I tend to give my smaller raptors because at five metres long her sheer size is impressive but also makes it harder for her to go unnoticed by potential prey. Dakotaraptor has such long legs compared to other Dromaeosaurids that I'm tempted to think it might have hunted a bit like a cheetah, relying on an ambush or a sneak and then a sudden burst of speed to take down prey.

Having said all that, I think I messed up on the feet and made the arms too long. :P

Also, an updated colour scheme on my Velociraptor headshot:

Theropod legs are your nemesis, you say? That is like the only part I can feel confident about drawing... hehe.

Hahaha I guess I could just take a look at my parents' chickens next time I'm staying there, but they're one of those breeds with really feathery feet and besides it's freezing outside and I am lazy. :P
