Another great example of CGI meshing well with physical effects is the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies. Treebeard was done perfectly. So were the eagles and Smaug.

They did try to have the animatronics fight each other, but the motions ended up being too slow and jerky.
Don't forget Gollum ;). Although, I do wish they had used more practical effects on The Hobbit (especially miniatures).

Actually, the fight in the film is CGI mainly because when the tried to have the animatronics fight each other, the Spinosaurus broke the Tyrannosaurus animatronic (which inspired the scene with the Spinosaurus breaking the Tyrannosaurus's neck).

I may have to check again, but I thought they broke it on purpose?

I don't think so, but please do correct me if I'm wrong :).

let me check my Winston Effect book..

Blade-of-the-Moon

Okay, the quote from my book reads thusly :

" That was a true fight." Ramsdell said. " They were just going to scrap the dinosaurs after the show anyway, so they really had us ram those two robots together to get as much great footage as we could. We had two puppeteering teams with their little telemetry devices , swinging them around; meanwhile these huge robots were slamming into each other across the way. Everybody on our crew was a little on edge about it, because we had put a lot of time and work into these things. But the producers and studio execs were having a great time watching this , rooting for either the T-Rex or the Spinosaur to win. We ended up knocking the head off the Trex so I guess the Spinosaur won.  " That was a really sad ending to a long night of shooting." added John Rosengrant " The Spino threw one final blow and broke the T-Rex's neck. The head collapsed, the neck tore open in the back, and hydraulic fluid shot out of it , like blood spurting."

It sounds to me like the intent was to beat them up pretty good til one couldn't function anymore. :/

1stly, many thanks to everyone else for covering the problems I had w/JW (specifically, the crappy CGI, the sexism, the back-&-forth btwn silly & serious, & the anti-Claire/real dino/JP fan sentiment).

2ndly, there's something else that's been bothering me since seeing JW: Why hasn't anyone made a video combining the Mosasaurus clips w/the Free Willy theme? Basically, I wanna see the JW version of 5:30-6:00, but w/more of the theme included: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVGLLRPpN-0&t=71s

Thanks for finding that Blade I was pretty sure I had read that but everyone was so definitive in their claims it was CGI I was doubting myself. I have the two Making Of books for the first two films but I forgot to check my Winston Effect book and sure enough there it is. I also remember there were reports in the news when the movie came out but again I wasn't 100% positive. It's funny how some myths become fact if they are repeated enough times. Winston Studios did a great job providing a real fight and should be remembered for it.

Well, one great thing about JW is that the disgraceful existence of JP3 can be ignored even more easily, better pterosaurs notwithstanding.

I would have liked to have seen more dinosaur-dinosaur interaction. While I enjoyed the final battle, it would have been cool to see the Freakosaurus vs a herd of Triceratops.

Ignored by you anyway. Tonight I will continue my JP marathon by watching JP3.

Very welcome! Tell me about it! lol

I am disappointed that was all we received though, I kept wishing for a Making of JP3 book..this is the closest we'll get though.  I don't even think we'll get a JW Making of book.

We did get an I. rex vs. Ankylosaurus scene though, one of my favorites in the movie!

Blade, the latest issue of Cinefex has a pretty lengthy article about the making of JW by Judy Duncan. There are some nice pictures of the animatronic Apatosaurus, an I. rex sculpt and the motion capture for the Velociraptors. I didn't have enough time to read the article. I may go back to B&N to do just that.

My buddy is going to check out Barnes and Noble tomorrow for me..if they have it it's mine! lol  Also better than paying 7.50 to ship it...

I went to walmart today to check for more JW stuff..I did not leave super pleased. Universal I hope is regrouping, because otherwise they totally dropped the ball. the toys now occupy only a 2x6' shelf space and are mostly down to shelf warmers.  The only other JW items out of every possible thing including school supplies was a couple beach towels and gummies. No cups, party stuff, paper products, bottles, backpacks, clothes, hats, ect..and they actually had Minions on all of those.  :-\
