I'll convert this topic into a valuations thread, so that all future requests for valuations have a home.  C:-)

The typical price for an expo figure on eBay is $100, but those are BIN prices. Some people will pay those prices, but only because they have few or no other options. My guess is that most expo figs would not reach $100 if they were listed at open auction with a low start price..

Reviving an old thread here I suppose. :)

I recently "won" a lot of ebay dinos and it included a Dino Riders Giant Ground Sloth.  After doing a little research, I discovered that it is the (apparently rare) Smithsonian exclusive version.  It's in good condition, but it's missing all its armor and stuff.  So, is it worth anything? ^-^

I thought the Smithsonian re-releases were the easier to find figures? Especially since it's much harder to find the original Dino Riders figures complete with all their many little accessories. I could be mistaken though.

They are rare in that they weren't made for long--lacking armour isn't an issue for the Smithsonian series (that would have been something!).  To the right collector, they are sought after, but an actual $$ amount is hard to say. Less than the DR figure (which really didn't last long on shelves), especially with its armour.

And this thread makes me wonder if anyone else here has ever gotten an appraisal/value on their collection?  As we are moving, and insuring ourselves anew in a new place,  I have to figure out what replacement value is (knowing full well that some, like the RSM mammals, can never be replaced).  Even assuming a low $5/figure average (I know, not really accurate) for 4100 figures-- :o :o :o :o

Has anyone ever done the numbers more properly? I don't think I could bring myself to do it (even though I should).

Sorry to bother, but could you enlighten me on what are the RSM Mammals?

The RSM is the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. They have several Tertiary-age dioramas featuring the fossil mammal faunas from different ages here. The models used were from the late 80s, and I managed to get a few single copies of a very few of them (Merychippus, Mesohippus, Dinictis/Hoplophoneus, Leptomeryx, Entelodon). The molds are in terrible shape, and the copies need severe amount of work, but at least I have them. And no, they can't be sold, traded or given away, nor can anyone procure copies if they are not directly associated with the RSM. I had originally got the molds/copies for the museum I was managing, intending to get other copies cleaned up for display purposes (but with my untimely lay-off, that probably won't happen). But I still have my copies!

I am currently trying to value and document my entire collection (coming up with a low value and a high value replacement estimate for each figure). I'm not sure how one could get an actual appraisal on their collection though. As far as I know, there are no appraisers out there who deal specifically with dinosaur toys!

And I'm having the same problem as you, how do you place a value on things that are so rare you could not be expected to ever get another?
