The Dimorphodon looks like it's the most carefully done of CollectA's lineup this year. The rest of them seem to be more rushed to completion to meet a deadline, with the return of their funny anatomical errors, like the extra fourth toe on the back feet of the Gigantspinosaurus, and the aforementioned error in the premaxillary tooth count in the Kronosaurus for instance.

I'm mostly impressed by the CollectA Dimorphodon.  It looks like it might be the most accurate Dimorphodon figure available.  But why does it have grey teeth!?
I'm not too sure why it has grey teeth...but it's nothing that a quick touch up with paint can't fix. :)

The point I was making with those images is that isn't a ton of up-to-date reference material readily available for Kronosaurus and that it'd be easy for a toy company to make that error. Fortunately, it's an extremely minor detail that doesn't drag down the entire toy. I still say CollectA's version blows WS's out of the water.

I can't say the Wild Safari Kronosaurus is blown out of the water when it seems to be the only Kronosaurus toy with an accurate head, and one of the few accurate reconstructions of Kronosaurus in any form.  That's my opinion though.

And mine is that the CollectA version has a better colour scheme, a more dynamic and realistic appearance, and the bonuses of a tail fluke and a chomping jaw that makes it more fun to play with. Again, a trivial dentition error is just that: trivial.  :)

I don't think the CollectA one has a better color scheme, but I think I prefer the CollectA too

The dentition error is just a minor thing, you have to go and search on purpose to notice it. A bit nitpicky, if you ask me. I think the Collecta version is still far superior, despite the supposed accuracy of the Safari's.

Tooth extraction is a simple procedure..I can have those removed in a minute or two. Shall I pencil anyone in?

Will it hurt?

Only if done incorrectly.

The dentition error is just a minor thing, you have to go and search on purpose to notice it. A bit nitpicky, if you ask me. I think the Collecta version is still far superior, despite the supposed accuracy of the Safari's.

Some people care about figures looking like the real animal and including the distinctive features that make the species what it is, so it isn't nitpicky.  If you have to intentionally go and search for the dentition inaccuracies to notice them, that might show just how widespread and ingrained reconstructions of Kronosaurus with dentition inaccuracies are.

suspsy

It is nitpicky though. It's not something that anyone is going to notice immediately at first glance, or possibly even second or third or fourth glance for that matter. Now, if the figure had a row of spines down its back, or undersized flippers, or a misshapen head, THAT would drag it down. But this trivial dentition error doesn't stop the figure from looking like a Kronosaurus regardless. Heck, I showed a photo of it (and photos of the other upcoming CollectA figures) to a couple of paleontologists at the CMN open house last fall and they both said it looked fantastic. The one who was in charge of the sea monsters display even asked if it was available in stores.

And as you admitted yourself, it's a widespread error, so it's even less likely to be noticed by a good many people who buy it. Sure, it warrants mentioning in a review, but it's hardly on the same level as say, the ever-popular Papo T. rex clan.

I for one notice it but only because the error is so widespread that my first impulse is to seek it out. It's actually very visible if you know to look for it, especially when the mouth is open.

I also find the colour scheme very simplistic, with a simple fade and some speckles with no interesting patterns. The choice of colours isn't bad, but the simple fade with no blending or such to set it apart just doesn't grab my attention the way the complex, almost koi like patterns of the Safari does.

As for the tail, the Safari actually does have an extent of flattening to it. It's not as large as the CollectA, but I prefer how it blends into the tail so seamlessly rather than the CollectA's which looks more like a fish's fin.

suspsy

I notice it now too, but again, it's just not a big deal for me. I do get where you and Sim are coming from. I highly value accuracy as well, but I'm willing to overlook errors depending on how they affect the toy overall. To each their own set of standards. I've said all I wish to say on this particular topic.

On an exciting note, I heard from Minizoo that they're going to be stocking the first wave of CollectA figures by the end of the week!  :))

Woot! I wonder how many the first wave will consist of...

suspsy

Off the top of my head, I think it's the Kronosaurus, Deinocheirus, Styracosaurus, Einiosaurus, Regaliceratops, Gigantspinosaurus, and Excalibosaurus. The rest come out in the summer.

The Regaliceratops is my most anticipated of the CollectAs this year, so hopefully I'll be able to acquire it soon... Mind you, that Gigantspinosaurus has a lot of charm as well!
Once a man is tired of dinosaurs, he is tired of life; for there is in a dinosaur all that life can afford.

Shonisaurus

For me the most anticipated are the dimorphodon, uintatherium, basilosaurus and marine prehistoric fauna. Although the others are magnificent.

i have to say.i gotta side with suspy and say that i'm really liking the look of the collectA kronosaurus moreso then the safari kronosaurus, despite the dentition error.
i also really like the regaliceratops.

suspsy

The Styracosaurus is a damn BEAST. I'm psyched to get all these figures, although I'll hold off on the Deinocheirus until later in the year.

Of the ones seen in the video,my favorite is the Excalibosaurus. :)
