[Off Nick and Eddie's reactions to the dinosaurs] Oh yeah "Ooh, aah", that's how it always starts. But then there's running and screaming.

{about the T-Rex) When he sees us with his kid isn't he gonna be like "you"!?

Blade-- Its a mixture of Airbrush for the base painting, ink washes to brink out skin folds, and dry brushing to highlight raised areas.

Ah, that's a lot of different techniques there !

Mine were spray can with brushes for details.  I really should have attempted a wash or dry brushed like I did with the Raptor.

The how to draw raptors website was a big influence on me when I started drawing, so I decided to use those methods....

This is what I have so far.....

Im not trying to make this spectacular, however, I want it to be recognizable.  What can I do to stop the clay from cracking?  Whats the easiest way to smooth the clay to make a more finished smooth  body?
Do I need the tools of the trade? Or can I use things around the house to help? Any info is great on my first venture in sculpture ^-^

Looking good so far :)
What kind of clay are you using? The reason for the cracking could be that you are using a low quality air dry clay, which is to be expected. If you're using epoxy putty, there should be no cracking or shrinking :-\ You can fill in the cracks by filling them with more clay.
There are many ways to smooth clay. Some people like to use water, vaseline, alcohol etc. I like to dip my tool in water and then go over the surface with it. There is a special liquid sold by clay manufacturers that is supposed to smooth the clay out. I haven't tried it myself.

And regarding tools, I think it's ok for a beginner to start out with simple things. Like a cocktail stick for details, and the back of a spoon for smoothing. Sounds crude but it gets the job done ;) You can get packs of assorted tools at hobby stores. I got mine from eBay.....

If there's anything else you wanna know just ask.

I wanted to try some digital 3d sculpting, so here is my first attempt....

I could not finish however, because sculptris kept crashing if I tried to change anything else.  Something about a run-time C+++ error.  The same thing happened for my next model, but At least I was able to somewhat finish before the C+++ error occurred.  Anyone know how to fix this?

This is my second attempt......

I'm not sure how to fix it myself but try messaging one of our other members, David, MB-CG, ect..really might be able to assist.

I wonder why no one else has really tried creating any JP inspired dinosaurs like this ? It would easy to sell them though Shapeways I bet.

Funny you say that, the dilo and carnotaurus are both available on shapeways......shameless self promotion, lol. The dimensions on the dilo make me think it could be the correct size to alternate with the horizon dilo.

lol That's cool. I had thought when browsing there would be at least ten JP Rexes on there..I'm surprised some member at JPToys hasn't caught on to make any.  A sick Trike , Gallimimus or a Ceratosaurus would probably be very welcome additions to most collections.

yankeetrex

Im going to try and tackle the JP3 Ceratosaurus next
