Been toying with the idea of making more 3D dinos so I've finally made a start. I fancy recreating the Ceratosaurus/Stegosaurus face off that I did for the mural or at least a version of it.

The Cerato is one of my all time favourites, a more primitive theropod than the Allosaurus it lived alongside, it has a slightly awkward shape that's irresistible from a drawing/sculpting perspective. The 3 horns are spectacular and iconic. Drawn this on A4 copier paper at 1:20th scale, the skull is 1:10th scale. It represents the holotype specimen, USNM 4735. There's a few references around to help with proportions including the original reconstructions by Charles Gilmore, his 1920 paper is available online.

For scale drawing I have a scale rulers PDF I made a few years ago with 9 scales between 1:8 and 1:48, it wasn't necessary for the Cerato drawing as 1:10/1:20 is easy to measure but it comes in handy on occasion. When printing I have to make sure the output is set to 100%, those 'Shrink to fit page' settings can be troublesome. It's A4 paper size but I could probably do a US letter sized one if anyone wanted one.

These sketches help me get into the form of the object. It feels like procrastination but I seem to benefit from messing about drawing before I start 3D modelling. I know this is quite derivative of my mural image. I seem to have a fondness for these front-on views of running theropods.

You are a creative Machine, pumping out new stuff in short intervals. :D

Again. This is all really impressive.

Thanks, been away from arty things for a while, hoping to get back on this soon.

Something i absolutely understand. My Tyrannosaur Diorama is untouched since months. It is finished, i "just" have to paint the Animals. But i never start. I am afraid i will mess them up and they will look unnatural or i do not know what. Maybe its the amount of unfinished Projects as a whole, that feels too much at the moment :D

I've messed up a few paint-jobs including a couple of skulls and my personal 3D print of my Dimorphodon. I just scrub off the acrylic with a toothbrush and re-prime/paint. I guess what I'm saying is that messing up doesn't have to be final, there can be a way back. I'm happy with how it came out in the end.

The monitor died on my desktop PC so I've been mostly off-grid for the past few weeks. Rather than replace it I got myself a pen display from XP-Pen. It's only 15.6". At some point I'll need a new full size screen but my puny 13yr old PC is a bit laggy supporting 2 displays (it's been tried).

I made a little frame to hold the screen upright for general use but allows it to be unclipped and placed flat when I want to draw with it. It's a bit of a rough prototype but I'll probably refine it at some point.

So lately I haven't done much creatively but I'm sort of up and running again and keen to see how the pen display compares with my Surface-Pro. As it happen I'm putting the dinosaurs away for a while. Grandson No. 2 now has his own bedroom and he's asking for a Paw Patrol mural so that's what I'll be working on next. To my astonishment I accidentally predicted this in post #42   :D. I've measured the space and I'm gearing up for design and layout.

Thanks.
Haven't been active here for a while as I've been busy with non-dinosaur projects such as this Paw Patrol mural for my younger grandson, first as a digital artwork...

...which was then transferred to the wall and painted in acrylics.

I'm not starting any serious art projects for a while as my landlord is renovating my accommodation. I'll be able to use my laptop when I'm round my daughter's place so I'll occasionally post some old stuff until I'm operational again.

Might as well start with this, it must have been the first dinosaur skeleton I ever attempted in Blender.

I'm guessing I made this around 2011/12 with the Blender 2.5/2.6 series, It's heavily influenced by paleo-art skeletal drawings which is something I wouldn't do these days, anyway my knowledge of dino bone structure has improved a lot since I did this. Also it's out of date with the current thinking on Steggy proportions.

That Dimorphodon is beautiful.

Thanks, DImorphodon 3D print STILL AVAILABLE ON SHAPEWAYS in 3 scales.

Made this old T. rex years ago, probably Blender 2.5x or 2.6x.

Haven't had many opportunities to do arty stuff this year, too much other stuff to do. Still need a new desktop PC at some point but I've had my scanner/printer in my old laptop so I managed to scan this the other day.

In hindsight I'm not sure if I like Ceratosaurus with this spiky/crusty look, might try something different.

My nephew likes coloring dinosaurs. And I'm glad I found this forum and this thread. Personally, I downloaded a lot of images from a particular source for nephew with dinosaurs and I really appreciate people from this forum for drawing their own.

Decided to make another skull for 3D print. Mostly based on specimen MWC 1 with parts adapted from other Ceratosaurus fossils. I normally create these orthographic views traditionally with pencil and tracing paper, this time I drew it entirely digitally in Krita, traced over digitally assembled reference.

Original research paper here-
https://ugspub.nr.utah.gov/publications/misc_pubs/mp-00-2.pdf
Some specimen photos viewable online at WitmerLab-

In the next few weeks I'm hoping to put a new PC together so I can have a go at the Blender 2.8/2.9 series. With my current hardware I'm still mostly bound to v2.79 but that will be fine for making this model.

Thanks, trying to get back into the swing of it, difficult with all the non-art stuff I've got going on.

That's an interesting idea, Is there a thread on this forum for images designed for colouring in?

Dinoreplicas

This one's been brooding in the background for too long, time to get started on the 3D model.
I'll put a few process pics up but not too many 'cause it slows me down. If anyone's interested in my methods there's a few threads here on the Dinotoy Forum.

T.rex W.I.P.
Styracosaurus skull W.I.P.
Dimorphodon W.I.P.
Mosasaurus W.I.P.

Used Krita's color-to-alpha filter to make the ortho drawing transparent for placement in Blender as a template.

Dinoreplicas

To make the skull I'm going to employ the same 3-step process I used for the Mosasaurus and the Styracosaurus, it's a bit of an odd approach but I like it.

  • freeform a 'scaffold sculpt' to form the basic shape
  • construct a low poly mesh over the scaffold
  • subdivide the low poly mesh and add details

The original orthographic drawing had a 0.5 meter scalebar but I've changed it to 0.8 meter so it encloses the length of the skull. This makes it easy to set up the template images in Blender which lets you set the width of the image numerically.

Starting the scaffold by approximating the form with subdivision surfaces, this eliminates a lot of messing about push/pulling a cube or sphere into shape.
