Thanks, as it's for a child's bedroom I didn't want to go too scary, I would like to try some darker themed stuff at some point.

QuoteAlso i really like your way to approach something like that. Everything you do seems to be planned, planned, more planned and then executed. I never plan anything and just start, which brings a lot of problems in the End. Or i try to plan, think that its way too much for me and don't do anything at all.
Can't help the planning, I'm kinda neurotic :)). It never completely eradicates problems though, often I admire people who make their art more spontaneously.

Quote from: Dusty Wren on February 19, 2021, 11:47:29 PMI love seeing an artist's process, so thank you for taking the time to scan in all those pages and talk about why you made certain changes. Kapitaenosavrvs is right; even though this is a battle scene, the colors and the clean line work make it seem so warm and inviting!
I get a lot of positive feedback from the WIP so it's part of my process now.

QuoteAlso, consider me impressed that you can draw a convincing Camarasaurus head from such a tricky low-angle perspective.
Thanks, if we ever meet a real one that'll probably be the angle we see it from :)).

Dinoreplicas

Some prep drawings for Camarasaurus pair. Not bothering with a final layout, just going to put the elements together and see what happens.

Some quick conifer branches, probably shuffle these around a bit until they're in a reasonable position.

Dinoreplicas

Colouring up eats more time than a hungry sauropd eats conifer needles. Once I start I find it hard to stop until it's finished, I look at the clock and suddenly it's 3.30 am .

Shonisaurus

Magnificent work Who taught you to draw? You are a talented artist.

Thanks, my personal opinion is that I don't think drawing can be taught but it's something that anyone can learn if they really want to, it's mostly practice and perseverance.

Thought I'd try a wide crop of the Camaras.

That picture reminds me of my dogs Buddy and Rexy. One just wants to eat, the other wont eat or let the other eat  ;)

The Camaras might cost a bit more to feed (unless you've got a spare forest to hand :D)

Kapitaenosavrvs

The Camaras look really lifelike. Really really good and yet they have this light, friendly vibe again, hehe.

Your Techniques are really good, and i support your Opinion, that this can't be taught. Someone can tell you about techniques and how to tackle something you want to try, but in the End someone just needs to sit down and drawdrawdraw fail draw draw fail. Good work!

Mural update: modified the foremost sauropod on the mural image, it had been bugging me for a while so I replaced it with a new drawing. An improved head and more plausible forelimb pose. The head is a little on the large side (trying dramatic perspective like I did for the cerato) but I'll scale it down a bit when I put in on the wall.

Dinoreplicas

Managed to make a start on the mural.
Drawing made with watercolour pencils (washes off easily). Grid lines 250 mm apart.

Dinoreplicas

Line drawing over the pencil lines painted with Burnt Umber acrylic, the idea is this 'under-painting' will show through as I'm applying colour.

Working in some background colour. I don't have a smartphone or camera so my daughter is emailing me a photo every 2-3 days. We're taking the pics from approximately the same position so I'm hoping to make some sort of timelapse GIF animation when it's done.

Kapitaenosavrvs

Wow, this is huge. Thats absolutely fantastic work.
I like, that you were smart and just used Grid Lines. I never did that and always whined about it not looking the way i wanted, regardless of knowing this method :-D
I a looking forward to the next Updates. Your Kids must be superhappy and proud :) I still really like the accurate Look but in a childfriendly composition. Straight out of a Book.

Haven't spent enough time at the mural these past few days but still making progress.

Dinoreplicas

Got a bit further with it.

Halichoeres

This is looking fantastic! The dark underpainting worked really well for you.

Thanks, I'm pleased with how quickly it's come together, I pre-plan a lot and this sometimes pays off.

This is the stuff I've been using to put paint on the wall. The mural is just about complete so I've decided it's not worth taking another intermediate photo. I'm just going to crack on until it's finished.

Dinoreplicas

Had some queries as to how I got the image on the wall with correct proportions so here's the diagram I used to manually transfer the lines (made 1/10th scale on the computer). Grid divisions represent 250mm.

Dinoreplicas

This has been pretty much finished since Tuesday but as usual I've been slow getting photos sorted.
We took a couple of close-ups which I'll put up when I receive them.
