Coelurus (Jurassic World, Dino-Rivals by Mattel)

…aurus and doesn’t actually make a physical appearance but it’s nice to see Mattel covering all their bases. Indeed, Mattel also produced a Microceratus for their toy line, a small ceratopsian also mentioned in the novel as well as Mussaurus from The Lost World: Jurassic Park. What’s next, a Dryosaurus or Ornitholetes? My fingers are crossed. The Mattel Coelurus is part of the new Dino-Rivals line but in size and price point similar to the Attack P…

Rhamphorhynchus (Jurassic World Dino-Escape, Wild Pack by Mattel)

…mes it was released but this variant was on my must-buy list. Who else can Mattel rope in with an appealing paintjob? Would a more appealing product offset the cost of more elaborate paintjobs? The Mattel Dino-Escape Rhamphorhynchus is currently available, though seemingly hard to find. If you want it, you’ll have to hunt it down fast, the next wave of Mattel toys is due out soon. I’m sure that in time this toy will get another re-paint, but I dou…

Velociraptor (male, JPIII – Amber Collection by Mattel)

…tor would be done true justice in the Amber series. Thankfully, it appears Mattel put in a little extra effort for this figure, with pretty impressive results, albeit not perfect. First of all and most importantly, Mattel has sculpted a brand-new head for this figure, reflecting the unique head shape seen on film. The antorbital ridges are raised and rounded; the tip of the snout at the nostrils is squared off, with the mouth line subtly curving u…

Velociraptor “Blue” (Jurassic World: Ferocious Pack by Mattel)

…s located just on the hips, which you must pull out and scan to bring your Mattel figures to life with the Jurassic World Facts App, available to download from the App Store and Google Play. As usual with Mattel’s JW figures, this one has cartoonish proportions, starting with perhaps my biggest pet peeve: the oversized feet (but I must admit that they are not as much of an eyesore as with other figures, at least to me). Moreover, the hip area is q…

Baryonyx (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Hammond Collection by Mattel)

…he neck and tail and bunched up around the shoulders.   I don’t have other Mattel Baryonyx toys so I can’t directly compare them to this one on the detail front, but I have plenty of other Mattel dinosaurs and this one doesn’t strike me as anything special when it comes to fine detail. That’s not to say it’s bad but having just reviewed a bunch of mainline toys with tremendous attention to detail I can’t say that this one brings much to the table….

Dsungaripterus (Jurassic World: Dominion, Ferocious Pack by Mattel)

…with an iffy track record with pterosaur figures, what can we expect from Mattel’s offering? The Mattel Dsungaripterus is part of their smaller scale line, this time rebranded as the Ferocious Pack. It’s articulated but lacks action features or sound gimmicks. From beak to tail it measures 4.5” and it has an 8” wingspan. The actual animal had a 9.8’ wingspan which puts this toy at about 1/15 in scale. Despite having some toy-like proportions this…

Nothosaurus (Jurassic World Dino-Trackers, Danger Pack by Mattel)

…he colors and the countershading is appropriate for an aquatic animal. The Mattel Nothosaurus is one of my favorite offerings from Mattel this year and one of their best non-dinosaurs. It should hold me over well enough until a company like PNSO, CollectA, or Safari delivers a proper figurine style Nothosaurus. Unfortunately, the Mattel Nothosaurus has proven to be an elusive figure, despite being released in both wave 1 and 2 of the Dino-Trackers…

Orkoraptor (Jurassic World: Wild Roar by Mattel)

…or impressive. I mean, the name says it all, right? Needless to say, when Mattel first announced its Megaraptor figure last year, I was elated. There have been very few figures of the genus before then, and already outdated [without feathers] or hard to find. The Mattel Megaraptor was definitely on my wish list. Unfortunately, I have yet to ever see it in person at any store. I had been put off simply grabbing it off Amazon [the only place I had…

Xuanhanosaurus (Jurassic World Dino Trackers Danger Pack by Mattel)

…he figure of Xuanhanosaurus better represents Piatnitzkysaurus. The figure Mattel made of Xuanhanosaurus looks more like a real dinosaur. In this essay, I will discuss this idea, while reviewing the figure that Mattel made to represent the very obscure Xuanhanosaurus. It is possible that there are unknown hybrid dinosaur designs which were made at Universal, and given to the designers at Mattel. We now think Piatnitzkysaurus‘ figure is based on so…

Protoceratops (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Attack Pack by Mattel)

…nd down, so that was a pleasant surprise too. But the best thing about the Mattel Protoceratops is that they made a Protoceratops at all, because the line certainly didn’t require it. I’m a proponent of voting with your money and with that in mind I think picking up this, and other toys of obscure creatures, will only encourage Mattel to produce more of them. And who knows, maybe that will in turn pave the way for other companies. Fingers crossed…

Tarbosaurus (Jurassic World: Massive Biters by Mattel)

…its latest meal! The claws on the hands are unpainted, as is the norm for Mattel, but in this case the claws on the feet do not see any paint either. The eyes are also red, once again really prominent against the grey head. As for the sculpt, while Mattel’s bipedal figures generally have enlarged feet as an aid to stability, to my eye, the feet on this one seem slightly larger than usual. The tail, while shorter than it should be (short tails are…

Majungasaurus (Jurassic World Sound Strike, by Mattel)

…attel Majungasaurus is without question one of the companies best theropods that is not based on the Jurassic movie franchise. It is unique, eye catching, and for an action figure, suitably accurate too. If you collect Mattel dinosaurs then this is certainly one that you won’t want to pass up. The Mattel Majungasaurus is new for 2020 and should eventually be found wherever Jurassic World toys are sold, or on Mattel’s web site….

Irritator (Jurassic World Sound Strike by Mattel)

…t skull was apparently a frustrating endeavor, hence the unusual name. The Mattel Irritator is presented with a gap in the sail, like the Asian spinosaurid Ichthyovenator. On the toy it seems likely that this was done primarily so the tail could be moved independently from the body but what the actual sail looked like is speculative. The detail work on this toy is admirable and consistent with many of Mattel’s recent releases. Different scale shap…

Rugops (Jurassic World: Ferocious Pack by Mattel)

…els and it is a fun toy itself. And personally, I am also really glad that Mattel is giving us so many rarely represented species. Usually, a company will release Carnotaurus and be done with it in terms of abelisaurids, but in 2022 alone, Mattel has given us Rugops, Rajasaurus, Skorpiovenator, and soon Quilmesaurus as well (the last one still puzzles me cause it’s only known from leg bones). Of course, those are no museum quality models and they’…

Rajasaurus (Jurassic World: Roar Strikers by Mattel)

…n the soles of the feet had a tendency to get worn off over time or if the Mattel design team simply wanted to do something new, but I’m not enamoured with it. It feels pretty secure and sturdy, but I suspect some children will end up breaking these panels during rough play, or just through too much curiosity. Like many Mattel theropods in this size category, the Rajasaurus has universal joints at the shoulders and basic rotating joints at the hip…

Lockwood Ultimate Battle Set (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom by Mattel)

…to humblebrag about the fact that I own every single pre-Dominion mainline Mattel animal, even if not all of them are yet on display. The sheer number of figures, repaints and all that Mattel has made far surpasses Kenner’s foray into 90’s Jurassic at least in terms of quantity. Quality? Well, I have already received a few broken toys, and the quality control is not the best. Several collectors have complained of animals having the wrong leg, or h…

Metriacanthosaurus (Jurassic Park Hammond Collection by Mattel)

…onated but since the toy is articulated you can easily fix that. I do wish Mattel would add wrist articulation more often though. Proportionally the figure looks decent. Mattel’s mid-sized HC theropods have better proportioned feet than the larger and smaller ones do, or did, Mattel seems to be downsizing the feet on all their HC theropods. The toy is detailed with small pebbly scales across the body. Bird-like tarsal scutes are sculpted on the fi…

Pteranodon (Jurassic Park: Legacy Amber Collection by Mattel)

…and the beak hangs slightly open in most poses. I can’t help wondering if Mattel could have conceived the housing for the figure in-box just a little bit better, or just put in the expense for a slightly bigger box. Once opened and on display, the Pteranodon does indeed look lovely. Paint applications can be hit or miss in Mattel’s general toy line, but the Pteranodon is a definite hit going on a home run. The figure is decked out in patterns of…

Postosuchus (Jurassic World Savage Strike by Mattel)

…ive on the hands and five on the feet, as opposed to the four on each that Mattel went with. It should be worth noting that the fourth digit (or fifth on the real animal) on the feet has been reconstructed as the shortest digit, which is correct, but the placement could use some adjusting in that it looks to be too high up (which could also be an issue as a result of its stance). The feet and hands (Postosuchus had especially tiny hands) are also…

Tyrannosaurus rex (Epic Roarin’)(Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous by Mattel)

…arly three years later, I’d say that assessment has been fully vindicated. Mattel has done a truly outstanding job with the license, producing a huge assortment of prehistoric toys containing relatively obscure genera such as Callovosaurus, Mussaurus, and Ornitholestes as well as longtime A-listers like the subject of this review, the eternally beloved Tyrannosaurus rex. More specifically, this is the 2020 Epic Roarin’ version, which my older son…
