I was wondering maybe someone could tell me the difference between the two velociraptor species. I know the blue is one species and the new black and the original 1/18 velociraptor are another, what are some characteristics that differed them in real life and manly in these figures are they overall the same figure or do they have slight differences?

L @LBDINO As far as the sculpts go, they are the same, but repainted. Velociraptor mongoliensis is the type species, and the one most people are familiar with (that is those familiar with the real animal, and the JP Deinonychus that incorrectly named as such). Velociraptor osmolskae was described in 2008, and was quite fragmentary (only remains consisted of partial maxillae and lacrimal from what I can find on it), and might not even belong to Velociraptor, according to a 2013 paper that suggested it was more related to Linheraptor. There also seems to be work done in the past few years on a specimen called MPC-D 100/982, which may be another distinct species of Velociraptor. Time will tell I guess.

V. mongoliensis is from the Djadochta Formation, where as V. osmolskae is from the Bayan Mandahu Formation. That third potential species was also from the former Djadochta Formation.

Edit: In total here is each of the Velociraptor releases:

V. mongoliensis original prototype (which did not have lips originally), plumage based on the adult Bearded Vulture:

My in hand pic of the first run (which the head was re-sculpted to have lips):

V. mongoliensis second production run prototype I think? It was intended to resemble the package art by Jonathan Kuo more then the original release did:

Both the finished version 1 figure, and I think the prototype for version 2:

Prototype of the Kickstarter exclusive blue Velociraptor, intended to represent V. osmolskae, plumage based on Western scrub jay (see here for more info).

Image of my in hand figure (with the first run original figure):

Red V. osmolskae version prototype (intended for folks that missed on the Kickstarter exclusive)?:

Read more about it here:

Red version second production run prototype?:

With the original release:

Prototype of the black version (if I recall correctly, the plumage on this release is based on the juvenile Bearded Vulture)?:

The "Alpha" V. osmolskae version, which was a retailer exclusive (not sure if the plumage is based on anything in particular, but I can do some digging):

More info here:

Additionally there was a model kit of the V. mongoliensis:

Lastly the prototypes of the 1/18 scale original/Bearded vulture and newest black version of V. mongoliensis, and blue version of V. osmolskae:

avatar_Faelrin @Faelrin Thanks for the round-up, didn't realise there were so many Velociraptor releases in the BotM toy line.

I'm surprised that there's enough interest that justifies making so many versions of the same dinosaur.

Online pre sale for the glow in the dark 1/18 Velociraptor, Protoceratops, and Psittacosaurus goes up at 12pm est (less then a half hour away from posting this).

https://shop.thepower-con.com/collections/pc2023/

This is for folks who can't make it out to the show. And unfortunately I might have to miss out on these. Probably had enough money on my cards but family needed it for important stuff and they haven't paid me back yet.

Edit: Velociraptor already sold out. Other two still available.

Edit 2: Other two have sold out now.

One big gripe I have with the final release Dilophosaurus is the paint application on the head and crest... Noticeably less precise than both the promo pics and the review sample. Mostly concerning the dark crests stripes where they feel tacked-on rather than blended into the keratin.

Sorry forgot to credit the original owner. Not my copy.

The cartoony crest paint makes me want to wait to see how the Cyberzoic version turns out before deciding on which one to purchase. That being said I do prefer the cleaner presentation of the BotM design. I am not a huge fan of these glued-on feather hoods/attachments as they tend to limit articulation.

Incidentally this also has a benefit of giving myself time to see if other companies are willing to tackle this genus with a static model (looking at you PNSO ;) ).

The more reviews I see of this little guy, the more I want the Botm Deinonychus!

My only criticism would be the exposed pegs on its wings, a similar criticism I have with the tiny 1/18 raptors. Still waiting on a 1/18 Zhenyuanlong... Pure speculation here, but I wonder if the lack of new 1/18 tiny raptors is because of sales not being good enough to justify further production? They are quite spenny for their size afterall, especially since their ceratopsian wavemates are considerably larger despite being the same price.

EmperorDinobot

The 1/18 raptors, protoceratops and psittacosaurus are my least favorite of their products by far. They fall apart pretty easily, and I have very small, delicate hands, so that's saying something. The price does not justify them at all. $15 less than then we have a game to play. The Protoceratops are the better ones. If they were a bit less fall apart-y they'd be royalty, but it's a shame.

I rewatched the Dilophosaurus video showcasing the articulation, and sure, it looks less shiny, but that's not a big problem for me. I still can't wait. The feathers are fine.

The Allosaurus looks amazing tbh. It's my least favorite dinosaur, and here I am waiting to own it like crazy.

But the Dilopho, uurggghh I hope it gets here soon.
