As This masterpiece was ordered by the AMNH it made Kaiyodo's name known around the world -
and soon after products were sold in the US.
Here, in the MAY-1992 Kaiyodo Catalog to the US , whereas Vinyl kits were offered for 15 $ to 60 $ -
The 'Barosaurus vs Allosaurus' kit required 2700 $ even back then :

The lower Diorama in the Catalog, 'finished in a  Platina metal finish', can be seen here - at the Kaiyodo director's home :

And also in the Kaiyodo store :

And shortly after western buildup artists discovered it too :

By Luis Rey :

BrontoScorpio

Another famous paint application - shown here under Matsumura's picture -

As one of Kaiyodo's most representative models it is often the highlight of exhibitions :

In the 2019 Kaiyodo Exhibition at Nagoya Venue  -
in the first corner It is exhibited in a group of items under the title "The best masterpieces of all time" :

It seems this version has lost its juvenile Barosaurus ...

BrontoScorpio

But the undeniable legendary paint version is this one :

seen on display at Wonder Festival and Kaiyodo Hobby Land :

At the center of the main glass exhibition - along with some other famous Matsumura's works -

From up close :

A set of photos From another visitor -

Taking a major stand From a recent talk show with Matsumura about his works -

Kit explained by Shuichi Miyawaki ( 宮脇修一 ), Managing Director of Kaiyodo Co. Ltd on his YouTube channel ( from minute 7:30 ) -

BrontoScorpio

And here is Araki's home version for the builtup kit -

And someone else - who tried to imitate the Catalog version :

An impressive version by another collector :

There's always doubts as to how crouched should the allosaurus be put in -

Even more impressive - This collector had gotten his hands also on the Matsumura's Diplodocus - those two are of the same family :

One last version - the one on the right is from some Kaiyodo publication that I can't recall where I saw :

BrontoScorpio

The 15th and Last post regarding the Kaiyodo 1991 ' Barosaurus vs Allosaurus ' -
Some other kits done following this one :

Mamenchisaurus vs Yangchuanosaurus ( マメンチサウルス 対 ヤンチュアノサウルス ) by SHINZEN from 1998

There is no scale notes - but it seems smaller to some extent and thinner -

' Barosaurus vs Allosaurus ' by galileo hernandez from geene-models  - Also based on the AMNH Display mount -

It is somewhat smaller at 1:40 scale -

Now there's only some reference links left for me to add here and there ...

BrontoScorpio

Now for the last bunch of resin kits acquired during  "The June Carnage on YAJ" -

How I love The sight of big & heavy untouched kit boxes - The titles say -

1) アンキロサウルス    -  Ankylosaurus
2) パラサウロロフス    -  Parasaurolophus
3) アンキケラトプス    -  Anchiceratops
4) スティラコサウルス -  Styracosaurus
5) サルタサウルス        -  Saltasaurus

Spread them all to see -

One last time :

A peek inside :

These are 5 Resin Prototype Master kits of Araki Kazunari's 1/20 Kaiyodo DINOLAND Soft Vinyl models -
Four of the five I have never seen before - it is like someone had found the key to the cave of Alibaba or to Aladin's ginny :

It looks like that time when Araki decided to clean up his storage shed :

Many of them I saw - some won, some lost some gave up - during "The June Carnage on YAJ" -

But this bunch belongs to that rightmost cardboard box -

BrontoScorpio

But at this point I faced with a Dilemma -
Those kits are the exact Resin Master replicas for the known Vinyl kits - every different part has an equivalent Vinyl part -
That means Vinyl kits can be made based on these original resin parts -
that means the kits are highly valuable in their unassembled form -
and ,in any case, those kits are too rare and expensive to take lightly any decision.

So, now I need to decide whether to assemble them or not.
what usually happens in such cases is that they stay for a few years at one collectors' ownership -
then he passes them on to the next collector for another couple of years - and so on ...

This reminds me of an old tale my grandmother used to tell me , called ' A Tale of Three Walnuts '  :

There were 3 Walnuts which were passed from each character to another  ( A squirrel, Dwarf, huntsmen, Distinguished Baron and so on ... )
in exchange for a valuable gifts or deeds , without really ever opening or using them -
until finally a small boy found them by chance, ate them all and be done with it ...

So, What should I do ?
One can always decide not to touch them - every single day - but if you do and assemble this lot -
once it's done it can no more be undone.

Maybe you can get a professional to use a high-precision 3D laser scanner and then produce a digital model of the individual parts, of sufficient quality to recreate molds for making PVC models from them. Then you can safely assemble them.

Thanks for the advice.
So, it is to assemble after making copies.
That is an original and smart thought.

As for me personally -
I am not intend on producing PVC kits - my concern was to the collectible value of those original Resin prototype Master kits.

But, I'll take your counsel remark :
F**k it, I'll assemble them and be done with it - just like the small kid from the old tale above -

But I'll take many pictures of the individual parts for my archeive.

The 1st in this bunch of Five Resin kits of Araki Kazunari's 1/20 Kaiyodo DINOLAND models -

1) アンキロサウルス    -  Ankylosaurus - 18 pictures :

A big and heavy box :

アンキロサウルス    -  Ankylosaurus :

All what was inside :

A 9 parts kit :

From the side :

Turn it upside down :

The main torso - with its many typical curves  and dents :

A side view :

view from the Top :

Weighs 1.1 kg :

The two main parts have a big attachment area between them -
and some amount of freedom of movement in the UP/DOWN directions :

Finally I decided about the best position in which to glue them back -
( it's good to know this Anky is able to go when it needs to go ... )

The two sides of the club at the end of the tail :

And now it is all done :

The right hind leg always wraps and crumples in the pre-made Soft Vinyl models of this Anky - no chance any of that would happen here :

And there the comparison shot -
Assembled Resin kit and assembled Vinyl kit :

with the Kaiyodo 'Saichania' 1/20 Resin Kit, also by Araki :

All 3 1/20 Ankylosaurs Resin kits - with the Alucard 'Euoplocephalus' :

BrontoScorpio

The 2nd in this bunch of Five Resin kits of Araki Kazunari's 1/20 Kaiyodo DINOLAND models -

2) パラサウロロフス    -  Parasaurolophus - 18 pictures :

A big and heavy box :

All what was inside :

and again :

A 7 parts kit :

From the other side :

From above :

Turn it upside down from bellow :

The main torso - with its many typical curves  and wrinkles :

The bottom side  :

Weighs 0.58 kg :

The three main parts have a big and smooth attachment area between them :

The two sides of the head are incredibly detailed :

And now it is all done :

The other side - with its calm and smooth appearance :

And there's the comparison shot -
Assembled Resin kit and assembled Vinyl kit :

With another Kaiyodo 1/20 Resin Kit Hadrosaur , the mighty Shantungosaurus by Matsumura :

The two  opposite each other :

The 3rd in this bunch of Five Resin kits of Araki Kazunari's 1/20 Kaiyodo DINOLAND models -

3) アンキケラトプス    -  Anchiceratops - 18 pictures :

Put it all on the big and heavy box :

All what's inside :

An 11 parts kit :

Turn it to the other side :

Turn it upside down from bellow :

and another from bellow :

One last From above :

The main torso - with its many typical curves and wrinkles and a scaly kind of armoured back, like that of a crocodile :

The bottom side  :

Weighs almost 1.1 kg :

All main parts have a big and smooth attachment area between them :

The biggest Attachment area is where the head goes :

The two sides of the head with the most impressive frill :

The three horns needed cutting and sanding so, hopefully, be fit to the three stumps  :

And now it is all done :

The other side of my anguish looking Anchiceratops :

An imposing sight while facing forward in a threatening posture :

And a comparison shot -
Assembled Resin kit and the pre-made Soft Vinyl version :

Wonderful to see these iconic Kaiyodo models in their original form :D . You certainly did the right thing. It would have been a sin to keep them unassembled.
They look gorgeous in this Rodin-like creamy white. I wouldn't even get them painted. Can't wait to see the classic Styracosaurus.

BrontoScorpio

The 4th in this bunch of Five Resin kits of Araki Kazunari's 1/20 Kaiyodo DINOLAND models -

4) スティラコサウルス -  Styracosaurus - 15 pictures :

This kit is somewhat different than the other 4 and is older.
It is also the only one I happened to stumble accross more than just this one time.

The unique older version box - but quite heavy on its own too :

All what was inside :

An 8 parts kit :

Looking at the back :

From the other side :

The main torso - on its back :

And from the side  :

Weighs 0.54 kg :

The three main parts have a big attachment area between them -
A key distinction between this one and all other four -
The legs parts include the entire organ ( thigh, leg & feet  ) - unlike all other kits.
This attribute is characteristic to older kits - from the mid 80's

And so is the attachment area to the head :
Unlike other newer kits - it is not well defined and certainly not flat and smooth ...

The two sides of the head with the most impressive frill and with great care for detailes :
deep canals from the back and some flowery decoration from the front -
Not to mention the 6 horns at the edge of the frill - that luckily were already attached and did not required to be assemble to the head one by one -
Only the horn on the nose needed to be attached to its stump  :

The same view with some different light :

And now it is all done and finished :

The view from other side - My angry looking Styracosaurus :

And there's the comparison shot -
The Assembled Resin kit and the pre-made Soft Vinyl version -
Watch the opened mouth in the Resin kit - Another different attribute :

BrontoScorpio

The 5th and last in this bunch of Five Resin kits of Araki Kazunari's 1/20 Kaiyodo DINOLAND models -

5) サルタサウルス        -  Saltasaurus    - 18 pictures :

A big and the heaviest box in this lot :

5) サルタサウルス        -  Saltasaurus :

All what is inside - this time it fills the entire inner volume :

A 9 parts kit :

From above :

And once again :

Turn it on its side :

Flip left to right :

All bottom attachments surfaces :

The three main parts have a big and smooth attachment areas between them :

At 1.9 kg - it is one of my heaviest kits - the 4th actually :

The bulk of the mass is concentrated at the main torso part - with its many armoured dots - which weighs almost 1.5 kg :

And now it is all done :

The other side :

And a front view - part menacing part timid :

And there's the comparison shot - Assembled Resin kit and assembled Vinyl kit :

Towering over an even smaller sauropod - the Matsumura Amargasaurus - another Kaiyodo 1/20 Resin Kit :

But it is no match for the Rearing Barosaurus - even at 1/35 scale :

postsaurischian

:)  Love the Styracosaurus. I didn't know the mouth was originally opened.
I wonder if the Stegosaurus was also available in this format.

Believe it or not - I have a 2nd Styracosaurus kit -
As I said - I've seen it more than once - which is also older than all others -
And this 2nd one also has its mouth opened - so it's official ...

Quote from: postsaurischian on August 25, 2024, 08:50:51 AMI wonder if the Stegosaurus was also available in this format.

Yes it was -
I have seen it just once, during the '2023 June Carnage on YAJ' - see the picture here after.
But I made my mind to let this one go - as it was part of a large lot.

I will have a summary later on.

BrontoScorpio

And there they stand - All Five Resin kits of Araki Kazunari's 1/20 Kaiyodo DINOLAND models - Fully assembled :

A lineup in pairs - The colorful Well known Soft Vinyl models in the back - and the rare Assembled Resin kit master models at the front :

Torvosaurus

My collection is smaller models, a lot in the 1/45 to 1/65 scales, with a few larger models. Most of my models are at the smaller end of those ranges. I have maybe a 100 or so models (I really need to start a thread to show my collection).

What I'm getting at is the time, money and energy to have items, such as the vinyl models and the resin models above, so that comparisons can be made like those above. I know my collection will never rival yours, BrontoScorpio, or many other collections, but I enjoy your posts. I always look to see if you and a couple of others have made a post as soon as I log in.
