@Flaffy That's true. It is unlikely that Lophostropheus had an unpaired crest (if any), since most critters around that area of the tree have paired crests, but till we find a skull, plausible deniability can be invoked. Or it could just be a weird cock's comb, as you mentioned.

This has to be the most pointless Beyond the Gates reveal yet, since this was already revealed at SDCC. I'm going to guess the next reveal is the Scutosaurus then (which would also be a waste). Also odd to have it revealed on its own like this, as the previous small figures were always paired up with either a human, or another critter as well. They've never done that before I don't think?

Hopefully they are saving some good stuff for next year. At the very least they still need to do an adult Stegosaurus, Spinosaurus, and Indominus rex. Indominus makes the most sense for next year with the 10 year anniversary for JW releasing, but not sure how they'll do the Spinosaurus, since they've yet to release two XL figures in one year, unless we need to wait for it to release in 2026 (assuming they do it at all). Last year would have been the perfect time with the remaining JPIII creatures released (Ankylosaurus, Corythosaurus, and the two raptors, and after the Ceratosaurus released in 2022), alongside the Brachiosaurus too, due to being JP's 30th anniversary, but well that ship has sailed.

@Blade-of-the-Moon I share the same thoughts. Actually left a comment on D @Dino Scream3232 review of this figure about the same point.

Back in 2018 it wasn't even certain something like the Brachiosaurus, let alone any of the others would ever be made for the line. It was such a surprise when the Brachiosaurus was revealed back at SDCC then to be releasing in 2019. Mattel have truly outdone themselves in continuing to deliver this many quality large sauropod figures like no company before them (there have been some, but never this many from one company).

Exactly. Previously my largest sauropods were the DinoRiders Brontosaurus and the Definitely Dinosaurs Ultrasaurus.  I recall Mattel had said they had pitched the idea to Universal and they were against it. Saying, like playsets, they wouldn't sell. If it took Target to get this done I'm ok with it.  At least they exist so not impossible for everyone to find.   I really don't know what is left on my wishlist? 1:1 Compy, Super Colossal Pyroraptor and Spinosaurus?  Perhaps one day the playsets will be attempted again.  I do hold out hope that someday DinoRiders will get a re-release with a company this involved and this successful. 

I wouldn't be surprised if the reason Mattel doesn't do anything with DinoRiders is because of cannibalism concerns with Jurassic.

Yeah, I have been assuming that they bought the DR license just to squat on it. I saw the Entertainment Earth set as Mattel doing the bare minimum to keep the trademarks alive, so they can have an effective monopoly on mass-market (i.e., you can find it at Walmart or Target or the equivalent) dinosaur action figures.

Eh, it's not exactly like that. Dino Riders was one of the IPs Mattel got when they acquired Tyco in 1997.

Ah, I see. I didn't realize it was inherited from Tyco, but that makes sense. I guess the result is the same from a consumer perspective, in that they don't see value in making a whole different dinosaur action figure line while they have the JW cash cow.

Speaking of keeping things in box, it's not a '24 release but my Target must have found a pallet of Mamenchisaurs in the back because they suddenly had a surplus on markdown after months of it being absent from the shelves. I always like to have an unopened one of these big figures in case necessity dictates getting rid of open ones seeing as they're much more manageable to keep when they're still in the box!

Mildly. The general shape is close enough to say that it's a scutosaurus. It is inaccurate on some of the finer detail like torso length, skull size, and amusingly, the lack of scutes.
The big chin spikes are mostly speculative in terms of size but they're a reference to the 90s kenner figure.

This new HC figure on the other hand is clearly based on the Kenner figure, hence the coloration and the oversized spikes under the jaw, but perhaps with a more modern touch:

@crazy8wizard @Faelrin Thank you for your replies. The real animal looks knobblier and more squat. Shame the toy is not quite right, cause it looks good and looks fun to pose. Funny how the Kenner looks a little closer to the real thing, minus the width and the chin-spikes.

Hopefully we'll get some of the other Permo-Triassic creatures from the Kenner line. An articulated Ornithosuchus, Lycaenops and/or Estemmenosuchus would be swell. Maybe a Moschops as well.

C @CarnotaurusKing I think the Postosuchus was a replacement for the Ornithosuchus. The 2020 figure has the same colors, and a similar pose as the Jurassic Park Series 2 (canceled) Ornithosuchus.





Honestly surprised we haven't gotten a Lycaenops and Estemmenosuchus from them yet. Really just those two, and the Coelophysis that haven't had Mattel figures yet, but Kenner did before. And well Utahraptor, but that's coming out this year supposedly from that accidental Entertainment Earth early listing I caught live (among others).

I know I've ragged on Mattel for making non-cannon species in the Hammond Collection line, but I certainly wouldn't mind Hammond Collection figures of any of those non-dinos. 100% will make an exception for those.

I always felt lucky to have at least one of every Kenner non-dino. Would have liked to get the dark blue Ornithosuchus, but only found the light blue.

It would be great to see Mattel create one that can be bipedal/quadrupedal

I agree that the Postosuchus is a reference to the Kenner Ornithosuchus, though I suspect the pose has more to do with basing the design on Safari's Postosuchus than anything else.

So I noticed a bunch of Mattel products are on sale up on Amazon, such as the Pachyrhinosaurus, HC Giganotosaurus, Mapusaurus, and Becklespinax. Man I wish I wasn't broke right now, I'd be picking up at least one of these (either Giga or the Becky).
