I already love them! I will probably grab them for my birthday (in July)
I'll make a "pre-order" om wishing you a Happy B-day, avatar_Saarlooswolfhound @Saarlooswolfhound .

Prehistoric Predators!

I have some ties with most of these but to keep it simple- my true enthusiasm lies with the canidae family and so here the direwolf is my favorite even though there still isn't a good representative of one made yet. I can't wait to add newer models to the fold such as the CollectA  arctodus (I hope to repaint one someday) and I hope to see more diversification in extinct mammals in the future (such as my repaints shown here).

And only 3 more to go!

Earth Story, Rebor, Custom repaint, PEC, Papo, K&M, Bullyland, Custom repaint, Bullyland, Safari, Safari, Mojo, Safari.

Mixed mammalia!

I think my very favorites here are my custom Bison latifrons, PNSO livyatan and the WWD alphadon. But each of these is unique to each other! So you can't go wrong.

Safari, PNSO, Bullyland, Eikoh, Papo, Safari, Bullyland, Customized Schleich, WWD (I forget the maker), Unknown, Bullyland, PEC, Eikoh, PEC, Eikoh

Wonderful job on the Bison latifrons, avatar_Saarlooswolfhound @Saarlooswolfhound . Did you do that yourself?

Yes, its an animal found where I grew up, is the unofficial mascot for the local Natural History Museum where I grew up, and so it was a natural project for me to work on. Customized from a Schleich texas longhorn bull. I don't do a lot of resculpting as I am not really confident in my skills but this is probably my favorite work I've done.

Great job on your custom figures! Also, don't you mean megalania?  :*D

Wow, didn't know Bullyland's Megatherium is that big! Also, why is it unpainted? Did you remove the paint yourself?

That is called a rohling! As far as I know it happens with Schleich and Bullyland models where you can find unpainted figures on the market. They were likely some sort of market sample used before selecting the color scheme for the final product. In my mammoth photo there is a Bully rohling there too. And no, that is an original finish figure that made its way out of the factory at some point without ever being painted.

Interesting, never heard of that before. And just asking out of mere curiosity, do those so-called rohlings exist for every Schleich/Bullyland figure? And are they limited to a single copy (that hits the market) per model?

Because these are essentially models that escaped from some HQ or factory somewhere and into the "wild" (the sales market, there isn't a whole lot of solid information about them. Perhaps they were given to employees, passed off to investors, or simply dumped somewhere and someone found them- no one really knows!

I'd imagine that for every figure made there *must* be at least one rohling for each (potentially a dozen or more to use as sample products or whatnot). They are often described as "rare" but I know of several collectors with the same rohling models, and some where I only know of one. So its difficult to say! And I mentioned Schleich and Bullyland as those seem to be the most common, but they exist for a variety of brands and figures, not just animal toys.

Torvosaurus

That is interesting. Thanks for the lesson. I'd never heard of rohlings prior to your post!

I'm glad I could share something new with you all!

And the finale for this category: "Fossils" (and a few extant skulls)

I have a few real fossils but I enjoy these plastic ones too.

And now, the Prehistorics page is viewable on The Curious Compendium! You can see images (they will change as I add new models to my curation) and you can check out other models I have if you fancy (its an extensive collection!). I've worked really hard to create and then renovate this site, so I really appreciate anyone who ventures to take a look around!

Ha, no! A few years back I was fortunate enough to have these all on display on bookcases. But I moved and had to downsize so they now live in plastic storage boxes- I hope to get them on display again someday! For the time being I only have wild canidae models and a few odds and ends I really enjoy (like my goldfish and betta fish collection). Its a roughly 5,000 piece collection so it can be difficult to manage storage!
