Quote from: Quiversaurus on September 26, 2023, 11:06:18 AMS @SidB Thanks for that suggestion! It's a good way to test out my comfort level first before actually trying it on my Allo.

BTW, I've actually done some light touching-up before too - I added some light brown wash to the creases and folds of the skin to accentuate them, as well as to the claws on the hands and feet. I found the glossy black a little too jarringly glossy and black. If you're (or anyone's) interested I can post some pictures!
You're welcome and I'll be interested in seeing the final outcome. And sure, I wouldn't mind seeing your ventures into-touch up work too, avatar_Quiversaurus @Quiversaurus .

S @SidB Here, managed to snap some this morning:

I applied a bit of the wash first to the lower jaw, which I felt was too pale and too green in contrast with the rest of its head.

I then applied some to the chest/torso area, to accentuate the lovely detail Papo included.

Next were the claws, which I felt were a bit too black and glossy, so I blended them in a bit with more of the wash.

Then I went down the body and filled in those creases and skin folds, done very pleasantly on this guy.

Did the same for under the tail (Allo's right side shown here).

Lastly, the webs of the feet, ankles as well as toe claws.

Let me know what you guys think. This was my first attempt at a touch-up, the main aims being to accentuate the details, as well as to "brownify" what I felt was a bit too green of a figure.

SidB

This works for me, avatar_Quiversaurus @Quiversaurus . Bringing out the sculpting detail really differentiates it from my original, without undermining the positive qualities of Papo's work. After all, meticulous attention to detail and scrupulous concern with paint application was a hallmark of their products at their best. The claws, color-wise, in particular, seemed to lack a certain integration with the limbs, and your browning wash has certainly been effective in overcoming this lack in the original. In other words, your 'intervention' has accentuated the splendid detail of the sculpt and paint application, without undermining its quality in any way.

Thank you for the kind words S @SidB , glad you like it!  ;D

I hope Papo one day returns to its former glory - their recent Kronosaurus and Mosasaurus bode well...

Realised I have another "line" of figures I collect but have yet to post.

As with my "rules" for collecting the scientifically accurate models above, I collect these Takara Tomy models specifically for their Jurassic Park/Jurassic World line. I like that even though they're small, their sculpts are pretty decent, and with a bit of paint touching up, they shine even better (elaborated on below).

I also only collect the models I find pleasing to my eye, and these somehow happen to be their ceratopsians - I lament the fact that they don't have a JP/JW version of a Triceratops! But with the new info about a Pachyrhinosaurus being one of the species in the Camp Cretaceous sequel, hopefully Takara Tomy does a version of it I can add to my collection.

I got Bumpy too, of course, because she's really the gem of Camp Cretaceous.

1. Nasutoceratops (from "The Battle at Big Rock").

I highlighted the bony portions of the frill, as well as the nasal boss and the toe claws (they were previously the same shade of blue plastic). I feel it brings the potential of the sculpt out a lot more, even if it's a very simple touch up.

2. Sinoceratops (from "Fallen Kingdom" I believe).

I removed the original frill markings cause they were kinda off-centre on my model, and added my own take. I plan to add the orange-brown markings as in the original model, just haven't had the time to do so yet. I also painted the toe claws on this guy.

3. Adult Bumpy (from "Camp Cretaceous").

4. Baby Bumpy (from "Camp Cretaceous").

This tiny figure was sculpted particularly well, even the paint apps look good for such a small scale.

5. Group shot.

Finally got my first HLG figure, and surprise surprise, it's a Stegosaurus.

I feel like I made a bit of an exception getting an S. ungulatus, since my rule is to get models of my favourite species only. But I think the quality of this figure, and the fact that it's not S. stenops, makes it a worthy addition.

With 1:35 scale human:

I really like the level of detail on this one, it's pretty much up there with PNSO's version of S. stenops:

With Papo's Allosaurus:

With Thabo, PNSO's Suchomimus - still one of my favs:

With PNSO's Wilson (waiting for a lipped version, that's my next target):

Group shot! Happy my collection has grown just a little bit:

All in all very happy with this purchase. Now if PNSO can do a 1:35 Kentrosaurus, and HLG do their version of an Iguanodon, my collection will be that much closer to complete...

Concavenator

I think HLG making a S. ungulatus is a smart choice. They're still putting out a Stegosaurus, one of the most famous dinosaurs, but competence with top-notch versions by Safari and PNSO is avoided by virtue of representing a different species. Congrats for the acquisition.

Your collection is great too. I think a collection's quality is not defined by the number of figures one owns, but by the quality of the individual pieces. So regardless of your collection being tiny, it's a splendid one. Also noticed none of the species represented in your collection are fragmentary. Congrats! I relate to that, mine is also devoid of scrappy taxa. I prefer collecting real dinosaurs to fictional ones too.  ;D

Unless you're somehow attached to PNSO's Wilson or Papo's Allosaurus, and in case you're accepting suggestions, I believe if you replaced those two with Eofauna's Tyrannosaurus and PNSO's Allosaurus*, respectively, your collection would class up even more!

I'm also curious about that 1:35 human figure. Where did you get it? Did you paint it yourself? Would like to get some 1:35 human figures for my collection. A 1:35 human figure is an accesory I wished PNSO, HLG or Eofauna would start including with their figures, just like Schleich did with their Replica-Saurus line, or as CollectA sometimes do nowadays as well.

* Yeah, I'm aware of Eofauna's Tyrannosaurus representing a different individual to Wilson, and that the PNSO Allosaurus represents A. jimmadseni, while Papo's represents A. fragilis. But I still think, that, as depictions of the individuals or species they're meant to depict, Eofauna's Sue and PNSO's Paul do a better job than PNSO's Wilson and Papo's Allosaurus do, respectively.

I really like this new HLG Stegosaurus, haven't purchased it so far, as I still belive Stegosaurus had cheeks, even if I find cheekless prettier.

I have always loved the Papo Allosaurus.

Congrats on those quality figures.

Thanks, avatar_Concavenator @Concavenator ! I've been looking at it a lot these few days, it's almost magnetic that way in its beauty.

QuoteAlso noticed none of the species represented in your collection are fragmentary. Congrats! I relate to that, mine is also devoid of scrappy taxa.

I do gravitate towards species with more complete remains. I didn't set out to make my fav species species with more complete remains, but it just happens to be so. I feel like the risk-averse side of me makes me want to not purchase a model that I may need to update down the road, when new fossil material is found or if new research is published.

And I do also like realistic models (though I make an exception for Takara Tomy Ania JW/JP ceratopsians  ;D ) too.

I AM indeed considering the Eofauna T. rex, I think it's an absolutely wonderful figure. And I do want an Eofauna figure one day as well, but I'm sitting on this for now. I'm not 100% sure yet! Plus I feel like part of me already wants a lipped PNSO T. rex. There's just something about their models that... sets them apart.

I have also considered the PNSO A. jimmadseni and came very close to purchasing it. But I have recently taken the view that it should be lipped, and so I'm considering PNSO's Saurophaganax, since it can stand in for A. fragilis. But I'm not 100% on it either cause it's not an A. jimmadseni...

Furthermore both Wilson and the Papo have sentimental value, so even if I update the species I may not actually get rid of them (:

I got the 1:35 human from here, and yes I had to sand down the parts, glue them together, and paint it. It was terrific fun. I removed the soldier's holster (won't want him shooting any dinosaurs) and gave him a more civilian scarf to make him look more like an explorer:

I believe this brand has a lot more soldier figures, plus it won't break the bank imo.

Thank you! Papo's Allo was my very first "realistic model" purchase, and it's very dear to me.

Do you have a collection thread by any chance? Would be fun to see your collection too!

No not yet, I plan to create a collection thread once I consider it complete or almost complete.
It's not that far to be.
However you can view my latest acquisitions in the recent acquisitions thread ^^

Did you know, avatar_Quiversaurus @Quiversaurus , that it's quite easy to unpronate  the Papo Allosaurus' hands.

Quiversaurus

Yes S @SidB, I believe you referred me to your efforts to do so earlier in this thread! Just that I feel a little hesitant to do so, for fear of messing up...

Ah, yes, I remember.

That new Stego is great, I'm planning to get one myself when HHT gets their stock in.

It is isn't it. I still keep it within easy reach, just to be able to appreciate it from time to time.

One more thought I forgot to add was that I'm glad the greens on this HLG version are quite different from those on the PNSO. When looking at promo pics, in-hand pics and video reviews, I couldn't tell what the actual shade was. This way it still stands out on a shelf even if placed next to a the very similar silhouette of the PNSO version.
