Wow Dorset treated you real good, guess you had to buy an extra suitcase to take it all home ?

I somehow managed to carry it all with 3 plastic carrier bags in each hand and a rucksack, waddling through London between train journeys, without losing or breaking anything. ;D

(Well, apart from my big chocolate fudge ammonite, but my dad told me it was probably a good thing it broke in two otherwise I'd never have eaten it. I'm inclined to agree).

I bought the new Favorite Rex skull model from DansDinosaurs.com :

This should help with my 1:1 T-Rex quite a bit especially the tooth placement..it's so detailed you can even see the serrations on the the teeth and it's obviously Stan which is also what my creation is based on.

I only wish they made a full skeleton model that was based on Stan.

New? I thought that skull had been out for a while now. It looks pretty decent, but I hate how the teeth are hanging out of the sockets. It's obviously something that is done to make the skull more impressive and intimidating.

Well newest I suppose.

I'm not sure about that if you look at the actual skull it's the same :

I wouldn't think they would leaving them hanging out on purpose.  I assumed gum and skin would cover up quite a bit of it.  I had seen anyone really commenting anything negative on this fleshed out version for example :

Seijun

Fresh from the Battat warehouse in New York:

(thank you "battatdinosaurs"!)
My living room smells like old plastic dinosaur toys... Better than air freshener!

Assembled:

I have a few doubles now, which I'll put up for trade/sale.

Now for Series B and C...

What exactly is the ratite at the bottom second in from the left? I really like it.
I really really like blue things.

Great new addition Seijun. I'm jealous.

These are the fossils I got on my holiday. (Bought most of them, only found one).

The top left one is a nice big Ichthyosaur cervical vert.
Top right is a portion of what I believe might be a plesiosaur pelvic section, too fragmented though so I'm not sure. Definitely marine reptile though at least. Middle left is what I think is the end of a plesiosaur (perhaps pliosaur?) humerus. To the right of that is a portion of Plesiosaur humerus, possibly from a juvenile or perhaps it's just lost some size due to the eroded state. Anyway the three plesiosaur fossils I got for a grand total of £3.50 so I was pretty chuffed with that. The one at the bottom I found on the beach at Lyme Regis. Looks to have a chunk of ammonite shell among the rock. The photo doesn't do it justice really.

I got these when I was out shopping a couple of weeks ago.

Couldn't resist getting this Elasmosaur (he's really big, which helps)

And I got some more Dinosaur Train figures. I really like the Velociraptor.

Congrats on that gorgeous dippy , Seiijun. Nice figure, and glad to see you get one !!!

Blade-of-the-Moon

That is a nice Elasmosaurus...who made it ?

FUTABA

On his belly it states he was made by Fast Champ Ind. Ltd. Some Hong Kong based company. He's only a cheapy but he's all rubbery and squidgy and glossy and feels a lot like what I'd imagine a plesiosaur to feel like, odd as it may seem. Can't stop myself from just picking him up and holding him.  :P

I have a large blue one that might be similar..mine's maybe 2' long ?

Actually, tyrantqueen, that is a cast of Stan's skull.  Jon Rader once explained that during the process of fossilization the teeth become detached from the skull and sediment often fills the space between the root and skull, leaving the teeth exposed as in this skull.  So I don't think it was done on purpose.  That is simply as the skull was preserved.  The roots have been pushed out of their sockets by the process described by Jon...

Okay, thanks for clarifying. That was an error on my part. Like I said, I still don't like it.

That's because the issue is corrected on the sculpture.  The teeth are no way as long as they are on the original stan skull.

If the teeth from a human were hanging out of their roots like they are on that skeleton, I would assume the owner would have gum disease. The root of the tooth anchors directly into the jawbone.

Let's look at Sue for comparison:

Much better.

So I think you just fell victim to the very process you were trying to illustrate. The picture you posted , if I am seeing correctly is the CORRECTED casting of Sue's skull and not the original piece. If you view Sue's actual skull, the teeth are hanging out even further than than the Stan model you were trying to point out. I have a thread on here from the Chicago Field Museum that has close-ups of the actual case with the real skull itself inside, and the teeth look much longer and more extended than in the picture you posted. I believe the picture you used is one of the castings, if I am seeing correctly.

Actual skull with teeth visibly extended.

Yes, that's true. But that Favorite skull is taken from a cast, right? So why couldn't they correct it? That just reinforces my point. Seems very lazy to me :-\

Btw, I disagree that the teeth on Sue are hanging out further than Stan's original skull. But that's water under the bridge.

amargasaurus cazaui

You are correct that yes they could have corrected the issue as they did with the castings of Sue. As to the extent of the teeth hanging out, I have seen the skull in person and it leaves one thinking they are extended more....but this is also highly likely to the fact Sue would seem an older animal and more mature than Stan, and imagery has been supplied that indicates that at least one of Sue's teeth is thirteen inches from root to tip. That makes one seriously toothy grin !!!

Blade-of-the-Moon

Most if not all the teeth I have do have the roots intact, so I'll be inserting them to the proper size.  I suppose they were basing the model off the actual fossil..knowing the issue with the teeth and being able to point it out to people only enhances it's teaching ability I think.  Of course the skull model will still assist me in proper tooth placement and the overall look when done as well.

It's a Dinornis/Moa.
