Inspired by palaeoart

Otherwise known as "the rip-off thread"  ;)

Many dinosaur figures are inspired by paintings and movies etc. Several Papo figures have been inspired by Jurassic Park, for example. There are plenty more well-known examples. Share 'em here! There was a post about this topic on Art Evolved, but the images are not showing up at the moment: http://blogevolved.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/dinosaur-toys-influenced-by-paleoart.html

Here's one I don't think has been noted before. This Sauropelta statue (maker unknown - I'm heading over to the ID thread next!) is clearly inspired by the palaeoart of Eleanor Kish (Unless Ellie was the sculptor too?):

The postcard was sent as a kind gift from Mnemosaurus - pure coincidence.

The resemblance is even closer to this similar painting by the same artist:

This figure just leaps to mind :

The Dino Discoveries piece by Safari based on Luis Rey's art .

..and Safari is still using Luis for reference :

I hope it's with permission this time..lot's of cool possibilities if so. ;D

CityRaptor

A rather classic example would be the Marx Dinosaurs, being based on the classic mural "Age of Reptiles".
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

Eleanor Kish may have worked on that Sauropelta as well. She did design the "Dinosaurs of China" Series for Safari. I'm frustrated because I know I've seen here Therizinosaurus painting before and it matches the Safari one in every respect. I just can't find it now.

Here is one most of us are probably aware of.

Bakker's Deinonychus.

Bullyland

Carnegie

Vegaceratops at the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Safari

Takama

Bullyland has some shockingly good examples,(from the museum they come from)

Arizonasaurus

Plateosaurus

Liensternus

Deinotherium

OK maybe not quite

Wish that Vaga had resembled the statue a tiny bit more...would have been Papo quality ! ;D

The Yowie Kakuru seems to be partly inspired by a piece by Mark Hallett.

Though the Yowie is screamingly pink, and Hallett's Kakuru is brown, they both have the same feather arrangement, including the scaly legs and the crest on the head. Plus, the Kakuru is the only feathered theropod in the line (aside from the Caudipteryx in the last series), and since we don't have fossil evidence for feathers in Kakuru, I think it's likely that they got the idea from Hallett.

^ Erm....don't wanna sound rude here, but the figure and the artwork don't look anything alike. If there's a similarity, I don't see it  :-\

Sorry, just my opinion.

Blade-of-the-Moon

The similarity there would be very basic really. Just the choices made on feather placement, and look..so maybe.

Shame that CollectA's deluxe Baryonyx was a cartoony abomination  *yuck*

I got this little Allosaurus in a lot on eBay and instantly recognized it. Quite the similarity between it and John Sibbick's illustration. Honestly that is the only reason I kept it.

The UKRD Allosaurus also strongly resembles that Sibbick illustration. In fact, a few of the larger UKRD figures look to have been inspired by Sibbick. From the Dino Collector site:

He's not as good as the prototype image..but not terribly bad either given how few nice Baryonyx replicas there are...it's actually one of the first CollectAs I bought. :)

There is another Allo I have based on Sibbick's Allosaur art by Funrise I think.

This is off topic a bit, but The Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia by David Norman is one of my fave dinosaur books, as retro and outdated as it is.  ^-^

I think their Iguanodon and Polacanthus were inspired by another piece from Richard Bizley, who did a similar Baryonyx.

Oh that is the CollectA Polacanthus for sure! I wrote the review for it on the blog and was wondering where they got the idea Polacanthus looked like that. Now I know, I guess they did some research after all...just not very good research.

By the looks of it, they also based their brachiosaurus' pose on that illo too  ::) Y'know, the twisty necked orange crested one.

Mineo Shiraishi's art seems similar to many figures.  I wonder which came first, the figure or the art? ???

Carnotaurus

Crylophosaurus

Dilong

Saltasaurus

Kentrosaurus

I still need to get one of these. CollectA Ampelosaurus.

Some more Carnegies

Elasmosaurus - Mineo Shiraishi (just the paint design)

Psittacosaurus - left and below the center of this old poster

Ichthyosaurus - a mural I saw at the Houston Museum of Natural History. Not sure if it's a print of another picture from somewhere else.

Could also be based on this one by Sibbick, or perhaps a combination of the two.  The eyes and coloring seem to indicate the one above.

Corythosaurus - the picture in the signature of a poster on these forums.
