Hello!!!

I'm fairly new to the board but I'm hoping to make this my home from now on! I'm not new to sculpting and has been all my life! I work in the game industry as a 3D artist and have been for the past 11+ years. I've decided to go back to my roots so here is my fist hand sculpted creation. I'm no Paleontologist but I promise my sculpts will get better and more accurate while still giving them my personal touches.

I'm currently working on a Ceratopsian bust and will be showing some pic soon! Also to promote my store after the new years. I want to get some opinions and suggestion on what bust I should make for the 3rd in the series of 6. Who ever I chose as the winner will get a fully painted bust for free of his/her suggested animal. I will post more info for that in a few weeks!

Free shipping in the US from my Etsy store. Thank you all so much!!!

1/10 6 inches tall Carnotaurus Bust. Everything is hand made from original sculpts, to molds, to casts and painting. I do it all at home in my garage and now I want to share it to you guys!

Kit - Fully assembled and primes top and base. Yo only have 2 pieces to paint and glue together, no other work is needed.

Fully ready - Fully assembled and painted. All done by hand at home by me and some spot process help from the wife lol.

That's awesome! Those look great! I do in house sculpting/casting as well. Have you considered doing a full Dinosaur after the 6 busts? I can't wait to see them all  :)

Kayakasaur - Thanks for your kind words! Knowing that you do the same is great to know. I would love to be able to get some pointers from you and others on how to get your sculpts out there and build a name for myself.

Yes I've been studying on making a whole sculpt and how to break it up into pieces. I think I have a good grasp on the techniques. I just need to work out the scale that will work well with my pressure pot. For sure after the 6 busts are done, I'll jump right into making a full body one. I'm planning on releasing 2 busts per month so I should be there in a few lol.

Thanks again for replying!!

Kayakasaurus

2 a month is great! That's neat you have a pressure pot. I only started selling at the beginning of this month, so I'm afraid I don't have much advice  :). I also sell my models hand painted with acrylics like you. You can see my mold at this thread: http://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=3126.msg116158#new

I'm using "oomoo 25" by smooth-on, and I have also used their "dragon skin". What type of silicone do you use?

Kayakasaurus,

I really love your molds and how it's done. Making molds is a labor of love and when it comes out almost perfect, it's a great accomplishment!!

I used to use the oomoo but I've switched to Platsil 73-20 from Brick in the yard. It'd tear strength is much higher and the viscosity is very low similar to maple syrup lol. The price is high though $140 for 1 gallon kit. I also believe the shelf life and cast life could last twice as long as Smooth-On. It's close to Smooth-On's Mold Star 20T but even thinner. Oh also it cures in about 1 hour.

Here is what my mold looks like for the body and upper jaw. Hope you like it.

Looks nice. on which ceratopsian bust you are working?
my suggestions:

Ceratosaurus, Styracosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus/ Stygimoloch, Parasaurolophus, Lambeosaurus, Cryolophosaurus :)

Hello Redonix! I'm on the lookout for a good mold release that won't effect the paint-ability of the casts. used any you could recommend? Thanks!

Kayakasaurus - Sorry for he late reply. I only use Smooth-ON Universal Mold release for resins casts. The trick is either washing with dish washing soap or wipe with 90% isopropyl alcohol. Personally I only use the alcohol since it dries fast and I can paint right away. I have a plastic tub full of alcohol and dunk and use a medium size paint brush it.

Hope this helps!

Not sure if it would help, but a good strong de-greaser dish detergent usually works well. Any piece that has been pulled from a mold can go into a warm soap water bath to remove the excess release agent.  Paint should work fine on them once dried.

Kayakasaurus

Congratulations on your line, I trust it is doing well. Your model looks very impressive in this review!

Hello Everyone!

Been busy but I promised to show you what I've been working on. Here she is, Regaliceratops. She's is a 1/10 scale bust at slightly over 7 inches from tip to tip. One of my favorite recently discovered dinosaur so I wanted to sculpt one. I will be finalizing her soon and will make a mold. Kits may be available as soon as next weekend. Anyway, hope you guys like her. Will also be available on Dan's Dinosaurs and My Etsy shop soon. Thanks!!!

PS: I will be holding a small contest (suggestions) on which species I should make for my 3rd and final bust. I will stop it at 3 and will try out a full body sculpts since a few people have been asking me for one.

Here she is, Regaliceratops Bust speak peak:

Looks great from what i've seen of the animal.

You know..you could turn this bust into a full figure...just a thought. ;)

If you expand this line enough you might have a new Customer. I like the idea of Collecting a line of Busts as opposed to full sized models

Redonix76

Takama -  That's interesting! I've been getting some interests in the bust but it seems like more people are asking for Full sculpts. Quite honestly I like doing busts because I can sculpt in a larger scale. So what I'll do is take a break after the 3rd to make a full then come out with more later on lol. Well once I hold the suggestion contest, you could let me know what you're looking for in a bust? thanks!!

I have less room for full sized figures. So bustst is a unique way for me to collect species in a large scale

What i would like to see is a Yangchuanosaurus and Allosaurus. Because they both are simalr animals whose differences lie in the skull
