Figured I'd give this a go. I was looking through one of my favorite older dinosaur books and came across this Coelophysis page that inspired me to try my hand at a sculpt. I may do some more mods to the armature before I get started, but figured I'd better start a page for it.

I wrapped the armature in wire tie wire, then got it into the shape I liked, mashed down some high spots. I found some clay in my paint cabinet and used it up and got this far. I know I have more hiding somewhere. If not I'll have to buy some.

I've done some more detail on the head, and added the anchor base for the teeth/gums. I've also added a little beef to the hands. I may have to make hand armatures with fingers because the clay keeps wanting to roll off at the palms of the hands.

I happened to find my half box of sculpey clay, and did some more work on the sculpture! Yay I dont have to wait for the clay order to come in! :D

Got a lot of fill and detailing done so far.

Did some more detailing and musculature work.

Did some more definition work on the legs and body, and added more beef to the tail. I've decided to build hand armatures because the clay keeps rolling off the frame while its being worked. It'll help make em stronger too. I'm going to re-pose the arms a bit while its in this state.

I've added some more detailing and also have begun the final limb sculpts with my sculpey firm clay. It tools so well, I really love the stuff! More to come.

Made more progress on the sculpture. All the main parts are laid out and now its down to the final detailing before baking it. Got the teeth set and also figured out how to solidify the model onto the stand so it doesn't twist and bobble anymore.

The finished baked clay sculpture. Theres a spot or two that requires a little sanding in inconspicuous areas, but its ready for paint now. This is where the excitement begins to happen! I have an amazing slab of dark hardwood that will make a wonderul base for the diorama! He will be chasing a lizard.

I have began the painting process. I'm going for the look that the book depicts, so Im starting with a white basecoat and going from there. I've already done some of the first gray wetwashing here as well.

Paint application step two. Initial wet base coating is finished, time to start the drybrushing process to bring the white color back on the belly and body while keeping the texture look going :)

I've been progressing through the painting process and am getting closer to completion. The flat acrylic paints I'm using buff out nicely to a realistic satin finish and solidifies the color layers. I am really liking how this is turning out! The support foot got a small crack in it already, but I think it can be fixed easily enough. It doesnt affect the model. You can see the difference between the raw paint and the polished areas.

The dinosaur is now finished! I really love how he came out! Now on to the diorama base it will live in :)

I've selected and prepared the wooden base for the model. I may addan additional piece of masonite to the bottom so I can extend the scene to encapsulate the wood. It'll be interesteing to see how it all comes together.

Hesperosuchus is on the menu...

I'm making a Hesperosuchus as the Coelophisys' prey. WIP status... The base wont be that big, it might even disappear.....

More progress on the Hesperosuchus. Going to bake it at this point then sculpt the other leg.

The sculpt is finished on the Hesperosuchus! Now the fun begins! To paint him and then..... placing them! :3

Got the first basecoat on. Going for a crocodilian color scheme. This will be intersting with the fleshtone base coat.

Paint application is almost complete.

I've finally finished the Hesperosuchus. It came out much better than I had anticipated :)

The model is finally attached to the base. Coelophysis has achieved perfection in the Matrix. Now the magic can begin! :D

Good job my friend! really cute Ceolophysis <3

Blade-of-the-Moon

Looking good so far.   The only critique I can give is to be sure and point the hands inward as Paul's reconstruction there is a bit out of date. ;)

Archinto

Ya, I have been looking at modern depictions of the dinosaur and am definitely gonna do the hands right. I don't think Ill add any feathers of sorts, as I kindof like the idea of leathery smooth skin on this guy. The vestigial finger, is that where our pinky would be, then they have an opposable thumb of sorts? The hand roots leave room for the hands to be right way. I can always bend em too. I like how its looking so far even just for being in a roughed out state. I think it'll really look keen.

Yes, though they look so vestigial they might be so much a part of the hand you neednt show them:  http://dinodo.fatcow.com/cmanus.html

I can't wait to see it finished! There is not enough Coelophysis in this world. :D

Would they still be able to move the fourth digit, and just have a wiggling lump or would it be an unmovable joint?

It would've been most likely unmovable.

That's what I thought... It wouldn't make sense to be moveable.

Looking at the skeletal diagram, Id like the think that the vestigial finger would maybe be a little bit protruding, acting as a grip within its palms for grabbing prey. I did some basic hand work on him and made the vestigial fingers a little too noticeable. ill fix that... I'm gonna look for more clay tonight, hopefully Ill find some more.

Mamasaurus

Looking good so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on it! Ever since watching Walking With Dinosaurs back when I was 11 or so, I've really liked ceolophysis, and there's not a whole lot of love to go around for the little critter.   :)

Blade-of-the-Moon

I first saw it on the Walter Cronkite dino doc from A&E.  My two favorites are still the little JP two pack.

Archinto

I love my jp ceolophysis. I have 5 of them. One was kinda chewed so i made him a battle damaged one. This book hasmy fave color rendition of the dinosaur. I want to make this one have the same colors and general aesthetic, but being correct to modern paleontological records :)

Blade-of-the-Moon

I have the same book I think. It's a pretty cool coloration, very raptor-like to me.

Jetoar

[Off Nick and Eddie's reactions to the dinosaurs] Oh yeah "Ooh, aah", that's how it always starts. But then there's running and screaming.

{about the T-Rex) When he sees us with his kid isn't he gonna be like "you"!?

Thank you for the nice comments everyone! I've added some new updates to the primary post while Im waiting for my clay order to arrive. I started roughing out some of the details. I may make his fingers a touch longer. They definitely dont have final claws by any means.

Love the look of the head and the general snaky-ness to the neck..something I always think of when I think Ceolophysis.

Archinto

I jumped for joy a bit this morning when I found my half box of super sculpey i was looking for! Now I dont have to wait for the order to ome in to finishe this guy. I'll leave the tail tip and foot bare until I get to the end, but got some of the fill for the sculpture put in and smoothed. Still have places to add and tool the finer lines. I'm loving how this is turning out! :D

Pachyrhinosaurus

Looking good  8). Are you going to keep it on the base? If so, It looks nice and natural and is a very good idea.

Ya, I'm going to retain the antler base, and I might even incorporate it into a base mounted diorama as a "log" and have this guy chasing a lizard or something
