Suprisingly the teeth werent that bad to do. I rolled out a thin string and pressed it flat, then took and inset the long flat piece into the gum grooves i made in the jaws. Then i defined em with a toothpick. Getting them triangular was a little bit of a bugger but again not too bad. Ive started doing the white basecoat on it. So itll be rad to see the progression! I hope it paints out like i am hoping it will :)

very cool, never thought of doing that.

Its a pretty effective technique for smaller sculpts. You could essentially do the same kind of deal and make a tooth plate for a 1:1 dinosaur, so that all the teeth are attached to one main rail that insets into a groove in the jaw/skull vs. setting all the individual teeth by themselves. You can make these tooth rails on paper like you already do, just cut a rail to match the jaw you're filling.

I've started the painting process on the lil coelophysis here. It's gonna look so cool! I've got the basecoat just about finished, just some more white on the tail, and then I can continue the grey wetwashing and proceed from there. Looooong ways to go. It'll look like the one in the book :) I'm going to find the wood base I want to use and possibly collect some materials today. Will see. It's been ages since I got a good day off work to do my own stuff haha!

Cool.

I'm sure it will look awesome when complete!

Got quite a bit of paint work done on this lil guy. Im using tamiya flat finish acrylic enamels. The paint is a little thinner than what I am used to, but the thin wash layers buff out nicely to a realistic satin finish. The underlayers bind with the top layers and make for a pretty rad looking finish. I am eager to do more on it and see how it turns out!

Now to go gather some of those diorama materials..... :o

This is shaping up to be a really fantastic rendition of one of my favorite dinosaurs. Great work!

The dinosaur is now finished! I really love how it looks! The paints turned out to work really well and they stick pretty solid on the clay. It totally changed the look once I started buffing it. I am eager to see how this technique works on future sculpts. Now i just need to round up the dio materials and finishe the sculpture as a whole. I'd say mr. Coelophysis here was definitely the hardest part! :o

Mamasaurus

Absolutely gorgeous! The color really makes this little guy come alive, and the wooden base really makes the whole sculpture a very handsome piece. An excellent and lively representation of one of my favorite dinosaurs.  :))

Thanks for all the awesome comments everyone! I never thought I'd be able to do a critter like this, but I kinda went beyond my own expectations of what I could do ! Lol! The bas is a chunk of caribou antler. I'm going to paint/stain it to look like a log in the diorama.

Yup, this guy has thumbs and vestigial fingers

I got the masonite board for the base under the wood cut today. I'm going to get it fastened, then attach the dinosaur to the base. I'll cover the base bottom with velvet or felt once its all done. Then the fun really begins! I'm going to use a lot of local winter mosses that grow in the woods here. I've found a way to preserve them like the stuff you find at a craft store. Theres really neat rocks here with lichens and whatnot, plus a lot of wood scraps that bear interesting flora that could be preserved and utilized. The goal is to make the raw edge of the wood look like a streambank and have the base surrounded in plants and rocks so it doesnt just look like a chunk of wood with rocks grass and a dinosaur put on it haha! If it turns out anything like how I am envisioning, itll be pretty dang cool! I hope to be able to sell it once its completed.

Just asking, would coelophysis have had thumbs?

Coelophysis had opposable thumbs and vestigial pinkes according to modern reconstructions. While sticking with the old school design, i did want to make it accurate as well. :) i may have emphasized the hand features a bit as i am more used to sculpting monsters. This dinosaur is my very first armature sculpture. :) im fi ding myself already wanting to start on another one... im thinking a pterosaur snatching a fish out of the water, supported by its beak with fish,so it looks like its flying

That is a great idea for a Pterosaur.

I've started the sculpt for the Coelophysis' prey. I'm making a Hesperosuchus for it to CHOMP! Its still in a very rough stage, and that base will probably go away. So far, I think its coming out good! :) Update is in the first post.
