I did not feel anyone especially considered anything presented at the time as even potentially possible or plausible. At least with the people I discussed it, there were hundreds of problems with the possibility that were glaringly obvious from the onset of the movie, not the least of which would be the amount of degradation the dna within the blood would suffer within the mosquito. Aside from that issues like oxygen content of the atmosphere has been a known issue for at least thirty years if not longer .
The concept of growing the dinosaurs from modern avians to me at least is a huge jump and massively unlikely compared to anything else they might construct as a mechanism.  Bad science to worse science ? Eh I guess its for each of us to determine our own levels of belief, but the point remains feathers could easily be explained away via any plot mechanism they might choose to use. They could even state that since the modern genome machines they are using were able to replicate entire strands of DNA , this allowed them to remove the frog dna and voila the new dinosaurs were more avian...feathers for instance.
Authors with varying competence have suggested dinosaurs disappeared because of meteorites...God's will, raids by little green hunters in flying saucers, lack of standing room in Noah's Ark, and palaeoweltschmerz—Glenn Jepsen

Blade-of-the-Moon

I recall seeing a plethora of articles and even a book or two about it...of course we know better now..you have to recall that at the time many of us were ten or so. I recall it as actually making me pick up a book on genetics at the time.

Heh heh..it may not be the greatest scientific answer but I feel it would easily put the idea of feathers into the general public's head...and just look at who is toting the idea..Steven's good friend Jack Horner.

Why not just have another company create them using avian dna instead of frog ? Of course the phrase itself doesn't carry the hype of " Dinosaurs from Chickens ! " ...which is what everyone is about .

The exact science is not important for a movie audience, although it would be thrilling for me. ^-^

And of course, it is also Jack Horner who is serving as consultant for this movie. He is the on board paleo-expert for the upcoming film as well. He has also stated the new dinosaur villain for this movie will leave you with nightmares.
I remember at some point back directly after the third movie when there was discussion of a fourth installment utilizing Baronyx as the key dinosaur. I wonder if Horner has helped push things in that direction given the use of Spinosaurus in the third installment.

I expect the cost of the movie tickets to see Jurassic Park 4 and the snacks will be more terrifying than any new dinosaur in the movie itself... :)
Don't you hate it when you legitimately compliment someone's mustache and she gets angry with you?

Blade-of-the-Moon

I'm actually hoping this new dinosaur is our chameleon carnotaurus finally.  I can imagine watching this in 3D and one just attacks the screen..would be a great " jump " scene.

That would be awesome!

OTOH, I don't think Crichton realized the potential of Carnotaurus - they tried it in the TV series, I've already and deservedly forgotten it, but yeah would love to see non-Disney Carney get some more screen time.  :))

You mean in Terra Nova ?  It is a popular species as well so here's hoping. I kept waiting for them in TLW but of course they never showed. I really think that they would be " nightmare " potential..at least for some.

As long as Jurassic Park IV is nothing like Jurassic Park III, I'll be happy. I despise Jurassic Park III, and everything about it. It is, in my opinion, at least one of the worst sequels of all time.
It's more like the kind of loathing that certain Star Wars fans have towards Episode I - an overreaction to a bad film due to being a fan of the series, thus turning it into the "worst film ever made" despite not being worthy of that title.
I do really hate that film though. I went out of my way to avoid owning that on DVD (even spending more money on the first two separately than all three as a bundle), as simply putting it with the other two films is just plain offensive to me.
Objectively, it's not as bad as I like to make it sound, I just really dislike that film.

The failed concept art...is it being revived in any shape or form? :o  *yuck*

My memory fails me, but weren't the dinosaurs somewhat evolving by Jurassic Park 3? I was wondering if anyone can verify whether or not the quilled Velociraptor (picture posted below) was from JP3?

I believe any hint of dino/humans was squashed early on.

That is from JP3 , but they weren't evolving. It's a separate species of Raptor from the first two films.

I've got one word for you on JP3: "Alan"  ::)

I'm betting some of my Carnegie's that its some kind of Concaradontosaur.   Really, what other dino could be more terrifying then that? Then again Dinosaurs had never terrified me since i was in Kindergarden.

Did you get that from some official source?  I thoght the film makers were lazily trying to make them more bird like, but your saying there is a story reason behind it?

suspsy

The fact that Jack Horner, an unabashed T. rex hater, is once again "advising" leads me to conclude that I will absolutely hate JP4.

I have a bad feeling about this....I am starting to suspect the film might have Giganotosaurus offing T-rex ala Spino in JP3 :(

I would have hoped that since this supposedly a reboot (is it a reboot? I don't even know anymore), they would return to having Rexie as the star...apparently not.

amargasaurus cazaui

Everything I read says this is not a reboot as such. The story is supposed to continue and go in new directions from the original material. Hence the need for a new dinosaur villain. From what I have read I somewhat doubt you can expect the Tyrannosaurus to be a central figure

How about an army of angry Therizinosaurus? :o
