That is indeed a very comprehensive description - Thanks.

Alas - it is way over my league ... :(

I was curious regarding the painting process only -

what are those "Citadel acrylics (Tallarn Sand and XV-88)" and what kind of brush you use to apply it ?

Lanthanotus

Your welcome,... those paints are sold by GamesWorkshop for their Warhammer and other games. They have a great palette of readily mixed colors to paint every army and hero in their approriate colors and Tallarn Sand and XV-88 are two of them. I use some very old artist brushes, in case of the Cilantaisaurus a round tip kolinsky sable-hair size 2 (but brushes made from synthetic hair work quite as good).

BrontoScorpio

Thanks.
I see those paints are marked as 'LAYER' / 'AIR' / 'BASE'
What does it mean and what should I go for ?

Lanthanotus

Warhammer figures are painted by the players with a lot of dedication and are true pieces of art. Base is the foundation color, it is thick and covers the underlaying material 100% if applied right. Layer is a bit thinner and used for applying layers on top of that foundation and to blend things in. Air is for airbrushing and then there's several other sorts aswell (technical, edge, dry...).

I for my part buy the paint for the color and not for the purpose Gamesworkshop designated them for. Basically any of these colors can be used for any of the purposes they are ment for, Gamesworkshop just offers them readily mixed for convenience. So any these colors can be used as base, wash or dry paint, you just need to prepare an amount of paint accordingly, thinning out (with water) what is ment as wash, or let an amount dry out/thick in when you mean to use it as dry paint.

I usually use one color of paint as a foundation for the whole dinosaur figure and then add washes and layers on top of that. However, there are other techniques and even if it's not about dinosaurs, it shows quite well, how great results can be achieved: Click!

PS: Actually, I do not own any AIR paints... I am not aware if Gamesworkshop AIR paints are waterbased or rely on another organic or inorganic thinner.

AIR are pre thinned and have finer pigments. You can still use them on plastics. Actually, I've used airbrush paints that contain alcohol (these http://ibuywargames.co.uk/Com-Art-Creature-Paint-Kit-Airbrush-Friendly-Acrylics-For-Your-Monsters) before and I didn't have any problems, they just smelt really strong and gave me a headache.

This thread has long seen no update due to me moving and fully renovating a house, a process that is not complete as of yet (and never will as everybody does not get tired to tell me), however, I added some nice figures to my collection, though most of them got stowed away in cardboard boxes after a short enjoyment of their acquisition. Nevertheless, my wife asked for something nice and interesting to set on top of our roof (awning above the entrance actually) and she agreed on a pterosaur. While I like the Dimorphodon more, I always pondered on getting the Guidraco and after having seen a nice customization of that here on the forums a few years ago so I deceided to go a similar way. The figure is set on a cement base and attached with wire to prevent it from being blown away by the wind.... need to make a photo from it on the roof.

Nice comeback pictures! avatar_Lanthanotus @Lanthanotus !
What a nice custom made adornment, a little turkey style.
Did I understand correctly that you do display that figure outdoors?

Lanthanotus

Yes, it`s sealed with two layers of clear lacquer. It is in a mostly shady and cool place on the north part of the buildung, but gets a good deal of full sun for three to four hours during summer. It also will get all the rain.... so I`ll see how it fares, but my hope is that it will not wither faster than its base :D

avatar_Lanthanotus @Lanthanotus That decoration in your garden has left you with a fable with that turkey-like guidraco, my best wishes is that the decoration figure will be kept permanently. My congratulations on your return to the DTF.

Fenestra

How did you manage to close the mouth like that? Did you have to cut off teeth and glue them back in place?

mgaguilar

Looks fantastic! Definitely one grand entry this will be.   :))

Lanthanotus

Thanks for all your comments :)

The mouth is still movable.... I just closed it with bending the teeth during the process. The teeth are really flexible and won`t break and anyway only two or three required bending to fit in between the according teeth of the other jaw.

Bokisaurus

I thought it looked familiar! Good job on it, it really shows how nice a figure it is!😃

Halichoeres

What a great gargoyle! Wonder if it will keep birds away.
In the kingdom of the blind, better take public transit. Well, in the kingdom of the sighted, too, really--almost everyone is a terrible driver.

Well, thanks. I'm going to have to take a closer look at mine then, because the mouth won't shut as nice as yours.
Your Guidraco has been transformed into a real eye catcher. Well done!

Here`s just two snapshots to give you an impression of how the figure is displayed... the surrounding house has a lot of stuff left to be dealt with, it`s 65years old and we started inside for obvious reasons :D

Clever idea and a fun way to make the neighbors curious  ;D Good job on the custom too, I like the result a lot.

Shonisaurus

That Collecta guidraco will make very good friends with the birds that perch on the door canopy.
