After weeks of speculation, we finally have Haolonggood’s second take on Tyrannosaurus rex.

Both of these colour schemes are superb.

And in terms of anatomy, these two have proper postures, big and beefy bodies, thick necks, and the correct skull profiles. However, the absence of lips is a major disappointment in light of the fact that the prevailing consensus among paleontologists is that T. rex possessed them. Not to mention the fact that both the Daspletosaurus and the Megaraptor have lips. I don’t get the inconsistency and I don’t think I’ll be picking up this one myself. But again, these are otherwise excellent toys, so people will choose as they see fit.

Here’s another attempt to post a link to the photos of my modified HLG Rexie. Fingers Crossed! 😉

Well, he’s here. The LIPPED HLG TRex. With larger, more correctly proportioned arms (“borrowed” from a HLG Daspletosaurus and modified for me by … BRAVO Models.) Aaron Bravo is a master customizer.
Wanna see how HLG SHOULD have made this Rexie? 😉
Have a look HERE:
Looks like the links feature has been turned off. A pity. 🙁

Lipless is disappointing, however…
I am not opposed to making an exception for a fantastic model, which this clearly is. Iin my own head, most animals with lips tend to pull them away from their teeth when warning off other predators.
If Rex really could, however, is another question entirely. Regardless, I won’t be passing this dino up.
I just received the HLG Dasp yesterday and it is just a wonderful model. I feel the same way about the HLG Rex from just the photos, so I am definitely getting one.
First post, long time lurker. Love the site; it has definitely helped drain my bank account.
Je n’aime pas trop les lèvre sur les grand dinosaures theropodes donc celui ci est pour moi .
OK. So I’m back. And you just KNOW what this post is gonna be about, dontcha? 😉
After expressing my disappointment about the new HLG Rex “liplessness” (see down below) I kept looking. And looking. Aaaannnd looking – at those BEAUTIFUL HLG Rexie paint jobs …. especially the Blue one ….
… and so I WEAKENED … and ordered me one (hey – at $35 + free shipping what can go wrong?) 🙂
Darn you HLG. Just darn you. *LOL*
If I was to get this figure, and I have no immediate plans at the moment, it would be because of the amazing paint job. Getting it lipped is possible (and I have six lipped tyrannosaurids, through and by Bravo Models), but expensive. I’ll wait a while to see how I feel about it a a couple of months. I do have several unlipped rexes, so this figure joining them is another option, I suppose, but no rush.
This … is a shocking “fail” from HLG. S-H-O-C-K-I-N-G.
I really don’t know what to say. I’ve been their biggest booster – I love the color patterns and poses of their figures. Their FULLY-LIPPED Daspletosaurus (an ancestor of TRex) is a thing of absolute BEAUTY.
All that they needed to do is to “scale it up”, and “beef it up”, and you would have the most beautiful TRex mass-produced figure of all time.
Instead they created a figure with a “lipped” lower jaw but an upper jaw that goes completely outside it. Stunning – and not in a good way. As in “stupefyingly shocking”. For a company that has led the way in super-accurate, beautifully painted, reasonably priced figures, this is frankly an incomprehensible “compromise” decision that is not likely to please anyone who cares about 2025 accuracy in their ultimate super-predator.
Yes, I am sure some folks will fork over an additional $50+ to artists to “sculpt” lips, but really, they shouldn’t have to. Its HLG for goodness sake! Except. Not this time.
This is a bigger disappointment to me than anything any other company has ever done, because we had fully expected HLG to get it right, based on their past record.
A HUGE step backwards. The world STILL awaits the ultimate mass-produced TRex figure. That this otherwise superb sculpt with beautiful paint jobs falls short leaves the door open.
Someone else may step in – but no other figure is ever likely to have a paint job equal to this one.
So we will continue to wait. And wait. And wait. While hordes of inaccurate TRexes continue being sold … including … this HLG. Never thought I would type a sentence like that last one, but … there it is.
What a disappointment.
Looks amazing. 5 stars!
