@Dilopho Yes that's correct. If you want something from this line do not wait on it (assuming you can afford it then and distribution isn't terrible or you have folks that can import for you). Short of repacks occasionally popping up, there is a very short shelf life for figures in this line. Each wave is around for a few months time. Some things like the Legacy sets at Target may be around for most of the year. I and others here have frequently prioritized getting things from this brand, and putting others on the backburner just to not have to deal with after market prices.

@Lynx The 2018 Carnotaurus you'd like has been gone since mid 2018 I'm afraid. It was wave 1 of the first year that Mattel had the brand, and it was highly sought after on release. No joke it took me store hopping back then to find just one.

It's a shame they retired it, it's the only version accurate to the main film it's in, and has one of the best action features I've seen in a dinosaur figure.

This is starting to bug me a little:
Mattel taking legacy collection or film accurate dinosaurs off sale
Particularly the ones less involved.
You see plenty of velociraptors, heck, the oldest of them all has not retired, but meanwhile, the only large film accurate spinosaurus we have got taken off sale. Same for the carnotaurus, and the baryonyx, and so much more.

I don't know why they are retiring these figures? If it's not for an upgraded version soon to come, it's beyond me why they would do this.

@Lynx That's because Mattel's products aren't like from other brands like Safari Ltd, etc that have longer stable shelf lives. They are primarily marketed to major retailers, and most importantly the retailers get a lot of say of what they want to carry and when they want to stop carrying certain products (such as if they don't sell well). It's not just Universal's and Mattel's say as well for which products are designed and marketed. It also is why many products have short tails, etc. They are working within the constraints and prices of what the retailers are willing to fit on their shelves. Routinely they focus on moving things along but mostly care more about what sells the best. Sometimes they gage this risk poorly though (way too many Indoraptors that shelf warmed and got clearanced off in 2018 as a result).

I've been collecting from the line since 2018's first wave in April. Here's trends I've noticed:

-After 2018's launch of individual human figures sold poorly and shelf warmed they were discontinued after 2019 (there were some repacks of the 2018 figures). 2019 was also their first attempt at doing dinosaur human packs (with the Legacy sets that were not carried in the US), which continued last year with the Camp Cretaceous sets and this year's Dominion sets, or Legacy Collection since 2020 I think. I mean they technically had these in 2018 with the story pack sets as well, but now it is the standard aside from what HC is doing.
-Battle Damage was Walmart exclusive in the US that they poorly managed. Too many of Wave 1 restocks. Little of Wave 2. Never carried the rest in stores. I think only the Pteranodon and Plesiosaurus had availability online and that was it. 2019's last wave never hit the states as far as I'm aware, and neither did any of 2020's (including the Albertosaurus repaint). I imported mine from my friend in Germany since he had access to all (including the rare Gasosaurus), except the Plesiosaurus I got from someone in Guatemala I met on instagram. The 2019 Battle Damage Spinosaurus showed up during the holiday season and only a few stores had carried it. 2019 also had the Albertosaurus and Baryonyx set which were readily available. They relaunched the line last year with the Extreme Damage Tyrannosaurus, and eventually the electronic Indominus rex but I think that one had poor distribution. This year saw a repack of the T. rex, the new Electronic Allosaurus, and some new smaller figures. Time will tell if later waves will have good distribution. We know there is an Extreme Damage Carnotaurus to come out next year.
-Savage Strike figures had abysmal distribution since their launch 2019 with the wave only readily available in surplus was 2019's wave 2 with the purple Dilophosaurus, claw attack Blue, etc. Things like the Postosuchus, Scutosaurus, Tanystropheus, etc remain sought after as a result. The Savage Strike Dimetrodon routinely went for over a $100 on ebay and third party Amazon sellers, with its extreme short shelf life.
-Attack pack figures sometimes also suffered from this, in the sense that only a year's first wave was readily available/restocked. Things like Bumpy ended up being available in some regions stores but never others.
-Electronic medium sized figures continue to be made because they sell well. 2019 was the only year they diverged from this (aside from a case of repainted Roarivores).
-Amber Collection launched in 2019 pretty poorly (2 figures and Gamestop US exclusive, online then in store). It was only into late 2020 that Target carried the line but it was strictly Delta and Echo's wave which shelf warmed and clearanced off. 2021 did not do much better. Victoria's Cantina also does a good job summarizing the problems that led to the line's cancelation before it was canceled.
-Hammond Collection seems to be doing better then AC did but we'll see as time goes on.

I guess if you want a super accurate and nice model you need a statue and not a toy, even a super poesable one?

To be completely honest, I have yet to see a good spinosaurid from Mattel that isn't Baryonyx or Spinosaurus, for some reason, they give the rest this strange overly crocodile look. They always have these weird spines sticking out and a snaggle tooth jaw. I don't have interest in buying one anytime soon

I don't mean this in a bad way but there probably isn't much of one, I doubt they get enough time to design properly because a lot of them show it. The Majungasaurus, for example- it's a great looking figure and good for the most part, but the horn has been interpreted as a wide crest, so I'm guessing they only had a few reference pics and they were all side views.

I'm also guessing that they choose lesser-known and sometimes almost totally unknown species just to avoid competition. The Hasbro JW figures looked awful because they were being forced to have a "style" by higher ups, at least according to an interview somewhere out there with somebody on the team- this is true because the prototypes, which even appear in the actual JW film, are MUUUUCH better.


 
I'm guessing there is something similar with Mattel where they are shifted towards species with no existing figures out there.

It is a good figure; but the big teeth kind of ruin it for me; still an awesome figure. In this video of Dan Surprise,  you can see the comparison between the HC Ceratosaurus figure with other Ceratosaurus figures;

It's interesting to think the Hasbro Ceratosaurus was one of their best JW toys (and a species long overdue for a figure), which is now completely overshadowed by Mattel's work.

In-hand pics of the new figures. The Nothosaurus is easily the standout of the bunch. But the utter lack of paint is very disappointing.
Makes them look like cheap factory rejects that are missing a couple coats of paint.

There's some better patterns and stuff compared to past releases, still think the only grab for me from this wave is the Nothosaurus. Gonna have to wait for a decent Austroraptor still but having a way better Nothosaurus after the Schleich one is very welcome. The fact that it's a JW product makes it almost funny.

You know, since I saw someone on the Collect Jurassic instagram post with those pics mention the Austroraptor would make a nice Spinoraptor custom, I'm tempted to pick it up to do exactly that with it. I understand most folks aren't interested in hybrids, and honestly I'm largely not either, but it was one of the only ones I actually liked using back in JWE, because I did dig the weird spinosaurid/dromaeosaurid mix and the skins for it. Agreed about the Nothosaurus being the best of the bunch of these here. By the way the Eocarcharia and Kronosaurus can also be seen in the back of these pics.

I also saw on CJ's instagram that the Dreadnoughtus is already being spotted in the US now, so folks here that want one should start keeping an eye out. I have plenty of catching up to do first so that's probably the last on my list. In fact here's what I'm behind on right now that I want:
-Grant & Dimetrodon set
-Kayla & Pyroraptor set
-HC Grant and Malcolm
-HC Ceratosaurus
-HC Triceratops
-Legacy Kitchen pack
-Legacy Stegosaurus pack
-Liopleurodon
-Therizinosaurus (I'm sure I can sit on this one for a while, my Target was still packed with them)
-Maybe the Atrociraptor Ghost set as well, but I'm not in any rush for it

Edit: Also have the HC T. rex in my pile of loot at BBTS. Just a matter of time before I have it shipped out (waiting for my Rebor T. rex and bases to come in).

Edit 2: Also not Mattel, but there's a new wave of Captivz I caught wind of on Andy's Dinosaur Reviews channel, and one of them is a Lystrosaurus. Here's the video:

And in case anyone is interested, since I went to grab that video, I saw he also reviewed the SDCC set (along with a comparison of the standard HC T. rex):

Seeing them side by side like this, I do still prefer the warmer tones of the original/standard version. It's not a perfect 1:1 match, but I just it much more faithful to the original maquette, and perhaps even the actual animatronic.



(To be honest, this is the first time I've seen this one, and wow. Look at this legendary beauty being created!)

Excited for that new and improved Herrerasaurus sculpt! Time to replace my old red one from 2018.

I saw the new Captivz at a Walmart a couple weeks ago and got the Brachiosaurus and Panthera, but was hoping for a Lystrosaurus!
