I love that arapaima (the spino is wonderful, too, of course, but I am especially fond of arapaima). The print quality on both of these is great, and the prices on the Etsy shop seem shockingly reasonable for that level of quality. Maybe Shapeways has just skewed my perception of what the price should be for a good 3D print?

Anyway, can't wait to see how you paint these up!

You're definitely paying a premium with shapeways. I guess the tradeoff is consistency and reputation; if you print the same model 10 times with shapeways it will probably be 99.9% identical each time where as there are dozens of different home printers (as in the actual machines) and quality can vary a lot. That said I've never had a bad experience buying a 3D printed model from a hobby seller... baseline quality has gone way up and prices are finally starting to level off. You can get some really, really cool models for very reasonable prices nowadays!

I just hope someone breaks into the hobby with more cool dino models. Most of the widely available ones lean heavy on fantasy, which is cool and I like those, but it would be nice to get some more natural looking models too.

avatar_paintingdinos @paintingdinos Thanks! Lots of good stuff there. What size of Spinosaurus did you get?

I got the 150mm. 200mm is closer to what the original was (I think just a hair bigger).

In other news, the older Saurozoic Krentz Rex is done. I got this model as a gift a few years ago so it feels great to finally see it completed.

Someday I'd love to add Krentz's Regina Mundi to my collection but for now I'll have to live with the BOTM bigboy Rex  O:-)

Having to fit the last rex onto my shelf made me realize I never took any really good photos of this one. Not that my photography skills are all that "good" but here's some updated shots with natural light. I'm trying to get updated shots of my older models so I always have a record of them.

This detail doesn't really show up in most photos but its one of my favorite when I actually hold the model. In my head I call it the "bleeding heart" rex.

Mmm, extremely exited about this one. I've wanted this ever since ITdactyl posted it in the gaming miniatures thread but finally bit the bullet and purchased it. I've been avoiding most international orders for a while now but this arrived from Sweden with no issues.

I've been involved in sport dog training for many years and this one really pulls on the ol heart strings. It feels very real, there's a ton of love and pride that goes into training an animal and I appreciate how this model captures that warmth and bond.

Its an extremely nice model, you're going to love it! Can't get over how charming it is.

Nice feathering on the bleeding heart. It reminds me of the scalloped feathers you see on turkeys or Inca doves.

The racing pterosaur is a really charming design, too. Looking forward to seeing you work your magic on it.

This is nice!

Aren't those really pricey, the Krentz figures?  That was a generous gift.  I love the orange and brown, up until the baby blue highlights it resembles the group of colors used on the PNSO Wilson.  I much prefer the way you used the colors here, it's lighter and I'd probably own a Wilson if it was painted as good as yours.  :)

Thank you! I'm still trying to figure out feathers. I'm convinced there's some trick to making the fluffy, rounded feather look of modern birds at this scale. For the time being it eludes me.

The resin Krentz kits are a bit pricey, very much a special occasion sort of gift. This one was a Christmas gift from my spouse. He's really into model painting too so for a while we we got into the habit of exchanging models for the holidays!

Also thank you! In normal lighting its probably closer to Wilson, at least at a glance. I like taking pics of models in natural light outdoors because it really allows the colors pop. Sort of a shame given how many layers of color are on this thing... I need to get a better light for my display area  :o

Got some goodies in the mail the other day.

Oh I wonder what they could possibly be for. Hmmm.

Haha, of a sort. The first steps in a project that is many years overdue.

I might make a new thread about it once I get everything started. I think some people will enjoy watching me flounder (pun??) through it.

Halichoeres

Yesss. I for one am really looking forward to seeing what you make for the mosasaur.

1/2 of the Ancient Era Artistry "Twinning" model complete! Hopefully I'll get more impressive shots once the whole model is finished  :P

Oh, wonderful choice of colours! The head is especially nice and already perfect for my tastes :) .

Thanks  :) I was worried the fleshy colors might come off as too unnatural for an animal who's skin was probably more scaly. But I thought it made for some interesting contrast.

That it does! Furthermore,I find that the overall effect is remarkably lifelike and believable.
