Outstanding. I know how you feel about the feet; I don't often draw or paint birds, but I did a lyrebird a few years back and I was especially proud of the feet too.

The feet of this deinonychus look like that of a real bird. It has turned out great.

On the other hand, the plumage of this deinonychus is truly realistic. My congratulations on your great painted figure.

S @Stolpergeist
You asked about this on the other thread, but I guess it makes more sense to post it here as an update.

Full disclosure, I forgot about this guy. It's been in a drawer for a while now, out of sight out of mind. But There was a little bit of progress from my last picture.

Drilled in a copper wire to the tail to straighten it out and added a few feather embellishments on the head. I left it being stuck on the tail, was never exactly sure how I wanted to do it. The biggest issue is stability, I'm worried whatever I do is going to be too fragile. Green stuff is likely the answer, but it's going to require quite a bit to finish and I'm being lazy about ordering more.

I hope you'll finish it anyway, even if it takes some more years but I am happy to see the update.
Also I haven't told you yet but you are so so good at sculpting feathers, it blows my mind ever since I saw the Battat custom from your icon.

You say right as I play around with changing my icon!

But yes, I love feathers. I've sat around for hours just carving away at small bits of sculpty, trying to get feathers to look halfway decent. It's hard! I love sculptures like the Sean Cooper Deinonychus or figures like the most recent Safari Deinonychus, but I just have this longing to see a model that more closely resembles a wood carved or ceramic bird statute (which I also collect). Something about the shape and bulk of those feathers is just so aesthetically pleasing to me.

My holy grail would be a maniraptoran model sculpted/carved in the style of, say, Al Jordan:

Something like the Microraptor Sean Cooper did for Urzeitshop comes darn close. Wish I could afford it haha.

Lol!

The artists who make those are also seemingly the only ones who really know how to sculpt feathers the proper way, the volume matters and is often forgotten

This I very much agree with. Which isn't to say I don't like the other reconstructions, and I can see the argument that perhaps dinosaurs didn't have the same volume of feathers as modern birds (I really don't know). But personally, I like the full-feathered bird look.

I wish I had money to burn, because the artist I posted earlier offers virtual sculpting classes. They are outside of my price range sadly, but I'm sure well worth it. Sculpting in wood seems way less forgiving, but clearly these artists have it down to a science.

This has basically become my collection thread in addition to the custom stuff, so I'm just going to leave this here:

I said no more kits but I couldn't help myself. From seller AhWeiWorkshop on Etsy. I came across this little bust by chance while looking for something else and had to have it.

There aren't many living dinosaurs as cool as a cassowary.

Halichoeres

That's an amazing sculpt. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

I agree with Halichoeres, the sculpt is fantastic. Really captures all the little details on the neck.

Oof, its been a while. 2021 has been a lot and I haven't had much going on in the collection/painting department, but I figured I'd stop back in. A couple of you were really nice to email to check in, and I appreciate that. Still here trucking along and recently had some time to pick a few things back up.

Its a long way from done, but this is my cuirrent WIP:

I received this Bob Morales Tylosaurus a few years back as a gift and figured it was as good a place to start as any. Its a really good model, but in its original form the mouth makes this sort of odd "U" shape that I never quite liked. I'm a coward when it comes to doing heavy edits to expensive resin models but this one was annoying enough to me that I gave it a shot. I'm no sculpting expert, but I'm pretty proud of how it turned out.

Since I have a lot of blue paint out for this guy I also decided to play around with crafting some terrain. I'd really like to improve so I can finally, FINALLY make a base for that Sideshow Mosasaur that's been living sideways on a shelf for years now.

SidB

Stunning result. Good to have you back, that's an excellent re-entry!

Dusty Wren

So glad to see you posting again, your work is really inspirational. Loving the look of the Tylosaurus so far!
Check out my customs thread!

Shonisaurus

I am so glad that you have incorporated again nice new paint look of that tylosaurus you have done a good job.

The reflections from the water surface on the flat areas of the base are a brilliant idea. Will you do some of that on the animal as well?

paintingdinos

Thank you all for the welcome back  :)

Maybe, I've experimented with doing the water lighting effect on non-terrain models before and sometimes I get it looking nice, sometimes not. I may go easy on myself and just do something simple. Since it's been so long, done will be better than perfect for this one  :o

Halichoeres

Good to have you back! Strong start on the Morales model, and the base looks great. Excited to see what you'll come up with the for the Sideshow mosasaur.

Oh what a sorry state of affairs.

I've been mulling over this model for months now trying to convince myself to just truck forward and finish it. There's always this moment where I say to myself "just finish it, you'll like it better once its done".... and yet, I somehow always hit this roadblock.

I'm posting this update here so maybe I can shame myself into seeing that "Oct 2021" post date for the original WIP and actually make a decision  ::)
(mouth isn't finished, just blocked off the color to get a feel for what I wanted the base coat to be)

paintingdinos

While the Tylosaurus sits at a standstill, I absorbed some inspiration from all the talk of basing here and fixed up an oldie (but a goodie!).

Home in the display case at last:

I have this guy's whole family STILL sitting in a hobby drawer waiting for paint  :-[. At one point I dreamed of a large diorama that had all of them displayed, but for now this will have to do.

CARN0TAURUS

First off, thank you, I've been enjoying paging thru all this and I'm a fan of your work!  My personal favorite is the enormous parasaurolophus with the beautiful gazelle like coloration, it's gorgeous!

I do have a question about this image.  Below the shelf you made for the parasaurolophus.  On the very top left of the small white bookshelf, is the cute little Japanese cave man/sabertooth set (I have one too) and a large mammoth, but in between them is a large smilodon/sabertooth figure.  I'm wondering what that is.  Is it something you made?  I've been doing some research and I can't seem to find that pose anywhere with that Smilodon in a natural pose and with his mouth closed.  I was hoping you could post some close up images and perhaps point me in the right direction so that I might be able to buy one if possible.  TIA

BlueKrono

Oof. Seeing that Sideshow amber mosasaur balancing on the tip of its nose and tail on that shelf gives me anxiety!
