Papo, the ony decent job this sculptor made was the Polacanthus, the Amargasaurus was horrible, the Protoceratops was horrible, the Concavenator was horrible, Einiosaurus wasn't horrible but neither good, but this is worse.

Do not do business with this sculptor again.

Please.

If Mr. Seo can't take all the work, then there has to be someone else out there with enought talent to produce something comparable. Look for that person, please.

I can't speak to the scientific accuracy, but I really like the dynamism of the pose. Is it exaggerated? Maybe, but I quite like it!

Joliezac

Nothing about this figure appeals to me at all. I am very excited however, for the Suchomimus. I hope it isn't a massive downgrade from the prototype shown at Toy Fair. It could easily be one of the best Prehistoric figures released this year, and one of Papo's best dinosaur figures.

Primeval12

I love it. Hypacrosaurus is one of my favorite species.

I do feel it could use a bit more vivid (or at least contrasted) paintjob and the eyes look a tiny bit cartoony but while I can't speak on accuracy (not 100% updated on hadrosaurids) the pose itself is really nice, I just hope it's plausible lol

Not a huge fan of this sculptor's work. Which often has lumpy undefined anatomy, alongside incoherent detail work.

I don't know if it sufficiently improves enough upon the previous Hypacrosaurus on the market to justify replacement, still debating on that personally. But given that the Safari ltd version is retired, I guess it is good for new collectors hoping to add the genus to their hadrosaur collection. The distinctive triangular hump is better represented on the Papo figure, but the overall anatomy (especially the manus & pes) is lesser than Safari's take IMO.

I initially IDed it as H. altispinus based on the limited promotional images. But seeing the figure in more angles, the hump isn't nearly as tall as I thought; plus a long and robust tail. Therefore it might represent H. stebingeri instead? Any thoughts from Hypacrosaurus fans?

I generally agree, with the exceptions that I think the Einiosaurus is just as bad as the Corythosaurus, and that the Polacanthus is awful.  Just awful.  I took another read of Halichoeres' review of the Papo Polacanthus and I think I didn't even get half way before having to stop because the figure was so disgusting.  I'm guessing the Ampelosaurus is by this sculptor too, it looks gruesome like all the other figures in your post.

Stegotyranno420

These papo figures look like how I expect a schliech figure should look.

SpartanSquat

Mr Seo must be papo main sculptor for dinos. The guy has been busy with marine reptiles and dragons.

He did this dragon. But I dont know why he is not involved in many dinos like 20-10 years ago. I hope he will be back. This 2020s has been a little weak in papo releases. I can count the marine reptiles, sucho and 2020 releases.
Ampelosaurus looks very inconsistent. Simple and oversaturated the back.

Joliezac

I don't know anything about Ampelosaurus anatomy wise. But this figure doesn't stand out to me in any way. The extra smooth areas and then rough mottled pattern on the back is very unappealing to me. 10 years ago I never thought I'd be more excited for the extant figures but in the past couple years that has been the case. At least they are excelling in some areas.

Official stock photo of the Suchomimus.

This thing is absolutely going to be the best representation at the price point...holy heck that looks incredible. The paint design and application plus the sculpting detail is ridiculous.

SidB

It's both pleasing and yet a bit frustrating - pleasing because of its high quality, frustrating because it shows up the opportunities that Papo has passed by in fabricating absurdities like their Protoceratops and Giganotosaurus, for example. But yes, it really shows what they can do when they choose to do it.

I'm definitely sticking with Safari's version. I find this one quite off-putting.

You saw what I had to say about the Conca. I shall now proceed to read this whole thread because I am ignorant of the details "behind the scenes". Who is Mr. Seo?

Concavenator

He's one of Papo's main sculptors. His sculpting style is very identifiable, especially when compared to Papo's other releases recently. It usually has clear musculature, spikes, and generally cross-hatched scale detail

His work includes the Allosaurus, Acrocanthosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Pachyrhinosaurus, Styracosaurus, Quetzalcoatlus, Giganotosaurus, Cryolophosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Feathered Velociraptor, Archaeopteryx, all the Jurassic Park-esque models, etc. etc.

This interview was posted in the forum a while back, but it's really cool to see some of his work-in-progresses at the time. https://blog.naver.com/eurofd/220371793092

In another post the interviewer gives this background (translated from Korean):
Spoiler
QuoteSeo Jeong-un
He was born in 1966 and is 50 years old in Korean age this year [2015].
Originally, you majored in Western painting, not plastic arts.
After graduating from college, he went to France in 1992.
I started making sculptures as a hobby around 1998.
He said that he met Papo around that time  .
In the beginning, Paphos was a company that distributed other companies' products.
It is said that the company's own products only had four series of articles.
After Mr. Seo Jeong-un started working as a Papo sculptor
After some time, the company shifted to full-scale manufacturing.
It is said that the Papo animals were released four years later.
At that time, sculptor Seo Jeong-un was in charge of the Papo figure.
You gave me directions to follow
"We will create figures that will satisfy both collectors and toy enthusiasts.
"Please match the price with the existing leading companies."
It is said that it was.

Since then, unlike other companies, Papho has not compromised on quality (unit price).
He said that he has been dragging it on until now and will continue to do so in the same way.
Because the designer is not involved in the business side
Read as many books as possible, study and research
Creating better quality figures
He said that was all he could do.

This was the profile of sculptor Seo Jeong-un and a brief history of Papo.

Oh thank you very much, you two.

Who sculpted Conca and the um...Protoceratops?
