Quote from: Torvosaurus on May 18, 2025, 08:49:45 PMThe book doesn't say that it swam underwater. I've always pictured the t-rex swimming like a crocodile at the surface, myself.

In reality, how deep is that river anyways? Is it deep enough that a t-rex couldn't just bounce off the bottom like hippos do, if it even needed to bounce like that? I've fished a lot of small rivers/creeks over the years, and except for the occasional deep hole, most are a lot shallower. Based on the width of that river, I'm instantly drawn to the Laramie River, the Big Thompson or the upper Arkansas, where you can wade across a lot of the river a good portion of the year. A t-rex wouldn't even get its knees wet.

Torvo

Good point! Where it lunges out of the water it looks especially shallow. Makes me think of all the Godzilla movies where he's somehow standing in the middle of the ocean and then entirely concealed close to the shore.

I also have to wonder why the t-rex didn't outpace them on land and get into the stream ahead of them, waiting for it's tasty treat. 🤔 Maybe t-rex wasn't able to think that far ahead.

I need to stop reading this post or I'll decide the movie isn't any good before I even see it. 😀

You know, I've never been big on the Godzilla movies, either the old ones or the newer ones. I did see the one with Matthew Broderick, but was still kind of blah about it.

I'm curious to see how the river raft scene will turn out. It's lifted from the novel so I image it will play out similarly.

Godzilla movies are hit and miss. I would definitely recommend Godzilla Minus One for the uninitiated. If you like that then backtrack to the original. I enjoy all of the Toho films from Japan, even the goofier ones, but I cannot stand the Broderick one. It is not a good introduction to Godzilla movies with it being widely panned by fans.

I have a hard time nitpicking the scene so far because I've been really enjoying the reaction people are having to it, a lot of people are finding this a scary new concept

Most people don't know that dinosaurs can even swim. (Depsite the fact that it was shown as recently as the last film!) It's fun to see the scope of what dinosaurs can do broaden in the public eye, and it's in spirit with the original JP film having scenes of dinosaurs running fast, being intelligent and being social.

avatar_Gwangi @Gwangi I've seen some of the 1950s/1960s/1970s films, but I just am not into them. Which is odd, cuz I love fantasy books and dragons and such.

I did buy the Ghidorah toy, though, cuz when painted up it makes a decent gorynych. My D&D campaign has a distinctly Eastern European flavor.

Really hate what they're doing with this series, atp the next movie is gonna have three more hybrids in the next "this is the REAL first laboratory" lol
Like what's the point of a dinosaur movie if you throw in stuff like that. Like sure you can argue that our Beluga buddy at least fits with the genetics theme as being some failed creation but even that is jumping the shark HARD to me.
I will however say...as dumb as this is conceptually, I do like the design for the pterosaur/raptor guys, wouldn't mind picking up a small figure of those (colors remind me a bit of the prehistoric dragon from that mockumentary back then too)

Visually this movie looks fantastic, the stuff with the T. rex and the river look brilliant. T. rex looks scary again! But that's all thanks to Gareth Edwards. Story wise though...

Spoiler
this looks like crap. I hate that they're backtracking on the widespread presence of dinosaurs. I hate that there's ANOTHER island where dinosaurs were made. I hate the idea that they need the DNA of "the three largest dinos". I hate hybrids and mutants.

I could stomach a mutant if we're to believe it's a botched attempt to make a dinosaur but fully functioning hybrids between raptors and pterosaurs is a bonkers concept. Worse than any hybrid from the World trilogy. And the idea that they pre-date Jurassic Park itself makes it worse. They were struggling to maintain the actual dinosaurs, the raptors pushed the envelope enough on what they should bring back, and you mean to tell me they crossed the animals that "should all be destroyed" with something that can fly? And it worked? Why? And it cheapens the idea behind the Indominus if crossing dinosaurs was something they've been doing from the start. All the plot points of this movie are ideas I would have conjured up when I was a 9 year old playing with his toys. But they come from the mind of a 61 year old critically acclaimed screenwriter.

All that said, the Mutodons look kinda cool. I just don't want them in the Jurassic franchise. I really only want actual dinosaurs. I'll still watch it though, it will be a good looking movie if nothing else.

I got super excited about the real dinosaurs and then they hit me with those winged raptors, so sad. I'll probably watch it for the Tyrannosaurus, Mosasaurus and sauropods scenes but I think the mutations were not needed for this.

I do think it the raptors are not pre Jurassic Park, for what I understand the facilities were in use up to the 2010's (maybe they are the result of the first attempts to make hybrids before commiting to the creation of the Indominus, like trials to perfect the hybridization procedures). The big one might be older, closer in time to the original park.

It's... something, alright. Gonna keep my hopes up, so far I haven't disliked any JP movie (Even Dominion). They look cool, but I hope they don't take up all the screen time of the raptors.

Here's my thoughts on the trailer scenes:

Spoiler
To me this is looking amazing, I genuinely bust out laughing at the Mosasaurus slamming the boat against the cliff because it's so over the top in the best way
We've never had dinosaur action this full of personality and peril for a long time now. They are taking species we've already seen like Mosasaurus and T. rex and putting them back in the spotlight, refreshing them, updating their designs and sending them to play with our human cast with new optimism.

The T. rex scene is what I'm anticipating seeing the most. I LOVE it. I love this rex just slowly following the raft and sinking into the water because it's curious about what it's hunting but so full of casual confidence about its movements. It really has the intimidating aura of an apex predator.

The Titanosaurus is gorgeous. Innacurate but gorgeous. Seeing a huge herd of them interacting and covered in birds, seeing their huge tails curling through the air and touching eachother, they're so much more than set dressing. This is a needed course correction after the JW trilogy mainly used sauropods for decoration. I hope they get to do something scary, of course.

Regarding the Mutadons, I'm a bit mixed, they're clearly hybrids and not simple mutants. I was expecting something akin to a giant-sized ugly Yi here, but they honestly don't look bad. You can see that one in the trailer for a split second with its wings folded and it has such a great shape to it:
Screenshot 2025-05-20 153302.png
It's so bird. I love the skinny, long legs holding up a bulky big-armed frame.
I just wish it had feathers to complete the look, or something to make it look more disgusting like quills on its back or prominent tumors and veins.

I'm really enjoying the human cast. There's a shot in the trailer where Martin is looking up with pure fear in his eyes at a dangling, rotten corpse hanging out of a helicopter and still gripping a pistol tightly.

Aquilops still looks pretty ugly but a lot better than the artwork, you can still painfully tell how it's just a reuse of the Microceratops design as a base instead of being truly based on an Aquilops, BUT it's so much more convincing looking, I like the Tegu cheeks and how it does have Aquilops teeth, it looks alive.

That scene with the door shut and the guy crying, omg, it's so HEARTBREAKING, I feel so sorry for him...
Is this just like a Gareth Edwards signature thing now to have a scene where two characters are seperated by a door and die with red lighting? Lol.

The Mutadons look pretty good in motion, I like them. This movie sure seems like it might repeat Dominions problem of "A bunch of entirely disconnected feeling random dinosaur setpiece change that feel completely interchangeable with each other". Will probably wait for it to go on streaming instead of bothering to try catching it in theatres.

Where you say "heartbreaking", I say "hilarious". Honestly, I guffawed at that part of the trailer. Maybe there's something wrong with me.  :-[  :))

Well I've always been quite sympathetic to characters, I can put myself in their shoes really easily
Imagine if it was you and your friend on the other side of that door in either role

You might be right but I still don't like the concept of a third island, and that it's an island of misfit dinosaurs. In all actuality, mistakes would just be culled.

Isn't this the start of a new trilogy? If it is then I bet we get dinosaur/human hybrids by the end of it.

I didn't laugh because someone dies, I just thought it was funny because it was done so badly! Sympathy is earned through character building and good storytelling. So, maybe I'll forgive the over the top cliché and the bad acting when I see the whole film. But I doubt it.

DinoToyForum

Oh, and good to see flares in the trailer. It wouldn't be Jurassic Park/World without lots of flares so I was really hoping we'd see plenty in this film.  c):)  That's what I'm looking forward to the most - seeing flares. :P

Brocc21

I'm loving Gareth's direction more with every bit I see of it. Every shot is just beautiful, especially any scene involving those mountains or the Titanosaur herd. The Mosasaur scene will probably the highlight of the film for me. Feels more like a kaiju than anything the Monsterverse has put out recently lol. The river raft scene looks great too, and I don't recall if it's been mentioned here but this Rex looks great. Perfectly in line with Crash's aesthetic direction while still feeling newer than the other designs. Funny that none of the trailers have explained why families with children are present, human smuggling maybe?

I was never as opposed as some of you are, but the Distortus has grown on me a lot. I am however, not sold on the existence of the Mutadons. I assumed from the interviews that the cast was just trying to describe something which they didn't have the vocabulary for, but they were dead on. I like the visual philosophy behind their designs, they do feel more properly animal like than the monstrous hybrids of the World films, but still too dragon to be Jurassic. Maybe the final film will justify their existence to me.
