After a long drought, Kaiyodo appears to be releasing a couple of interesting prehistoric sets this year. They actually look to be mostly new sculpts this time. Slated for July release.

updated 6 April: Dakotaraptor, Ornithomimus, Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus×2

Hydrodamalis gigas (Steller's sea cow), Megatherium, Platybelodon, Thylacosmilus, Urile perspicillatus (spectacled cormorant)

More photos of the latter set:

OH Wow! Kaiyodo hasn't done something this exciting in years!

Only interested in the Ornithomimid for the dinosaurs, though that triceratops looks pretty solid too. (and another two rexes? ::), oh well, rex sells)

The mammals are the star of the show this time however. My guesses are:
- Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas)
- Thylacosmilus
- Spectacled cormorant / Pallas's cormorant (Urile perspicillatus)
- Amabelodont (Platybelodon?)
- Megatherium

As I've said at the ATF and STS and in my own mailing list announcement this morning, WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Taking orders now. Please PM if not on my mailing list.

And thanks for the hat tip. I can tip mine to Blaine and Dirk at the aforementioned sites as well...

My observations, already posted on the above...

Having had time to manage my initial excitement, digest, send the images to my mailing list, and look at the figures more closely...

I imagine the dino set might garner some criticism for repeating common subjects but I'm guessing the thought and potential reality is that the sales of those are what allows for slightly more esoteric sets like the very awesome other one.

And the two feathered guys somehow remind me stylistically of the small PNSO's.

As for the non-dinos, I first didn't notice that the sea cow has a water element like some of the company's Enoshima Aquarium figures, only it appears as though with this one you might look through it rather than have it as a background.

Can anyone tell what the bits above the animals are? It almost looks as though he's breaking the surface and those are birds. That rather aligns with the height of the water element.

I've long (looong) advocated for more and better renditions of prehistoric mammals. And the megatherium, though the original is nice enough, is stunning.

And I guess Kaiyodo finally got around to competing with UHA Collect Club's gorgeous platybelodon.

After such an extremely long dry spell (I only collect Kaiyodo and more recently NTC's...), 2022 should be a good year for me.

Again, taking orders now (Please PM if not on my mailing list.) and already alerted my new figure guy that I expect interest to be great so that he orders extra sets from his wholesaler.

Another angle from the ATF. Long tail and elongated mandible protrusions leads me to believe it's a Thylacosmilus instead of a Smilodon.

Illustration of the extinct Pallas's cormorant, whose remains have been found in Japan in 2018.

This is fantastic news! I do wish the dinosaur group wasn't rehashing Triceratops and T. rex again, but the actual sculpts look nice.

I'm here for the mammals, though, especially that Tylacosmilus. What a great-looking figure. The Amebelodon is a bit of a puzzle, because I thought Amebelodon's tusks were pretty prominent, but this angle makes it seem like the tusks are quite small, if they're even there at all. Could it be Phiomia?

Now that you've mentioned it, I haven't considered the possibility of the proboscidean being something even more basal. That certainly makes things a LOT more intersting!

I am so happy to see Kaiyodo back in the game again and with really interesting offerings this year. Been a long time coming for an updated ornithomimosaur (excluding Deinocheirus) on the market. The extinct Cenozoic things also have my attention, particularly the Thylacosmilus and a few others. I didn't hesitate in placing an order for some of these.

Edit: Wondering what the identity of the proboscidean is as well.

That dromaeosaurid could work as a 1/35-1/40 Dakotaraptor!! Never occurred to me why more companies don't release small dinosaurs in mini lines.
On and off dinosaur collecting phases over the span of millions of years has led me to this very forum.

Thanks avatar_Flaffy @Flaffy, in the first photo I saw the tail looked shorter and the jowls weren't obvious, so I assumed Smilodon. That and Kaiyodo has tended to remake species rather than introduce new ones over the last decade, outside of Expo sets. The latter reason is why I also assumed Copepteryx without really inspecting the figure.

I think those are gulls? Hard to be sure at this scale, but that would be a clever way to hint at the huge size of Steller's sea cow. I'm curious about what it's eating, maybe a kelp like Saccharina latissima?

I'm more interested in the Ornithomimosaur than the Dromaeosaur which is probably Deinonychus, though both interest me.
The Thylacosmilus also interests me a lot as do some of the other Cenozoic animals
Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, Archaeopteryx, Cetiosaurus, Compsognathus, Hadrosaurus, Brontosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Albertosaurus, Herrerasaurus, Stenonychosaurus, Deinonychus, Maiasaura, Carnotaurus, Baryonyx, Argentinosaurus, Sinosauropteryx, Microraptor, Citipati, Mei, Tianyulong, Kulindadromeus, Zhenyuanlong, Yutyrannus, Borealopelta, Caihong

CARN0TAURUS

Wow these look impressive!  Are these going to be the same size as the MiniQ miniature cube figures?

Shonisaurus

They are fabulous, the thylacosmilus and amabelodon look fantastic. The Kaiyodo figures are very nice, it's a pity that they are not sold in stores in Europe, as is also the case with the Favorite figures.

avatar_CARN0TAURUS @CARN0TAURUS I think so, yes. The little placards suggest they will only be a few hundred yen apiece, standard for capsule figures.

Yeah, I'm in for the dromaeosaur and ornithomimosaur for sure. I steer clear of Cenozoic stuff just to keep things under control, but this Thylacosmilus will be the first good figure apart from model kits and statues. (Geoworld made one, of course, but it's pretty crude.)

MiniQ or Capsule Q? I assume these will be part of the Capsule Q Museum

Grimbeard

That Megatherium looks really interesting, even unpainted. Looking forward to see how the painted version will look like. Megatherium is criminally underrepresented in proper toy/model from.

I totally agree with you, I do not understand why the megatherium is not more represented in the toy dinosaur market, my favorite figure is the one from Bullyland and it is from 1998, on the other hand its counterpart from Schleich is from 2003 and finally it only remains in the companies acquaintances from the toy dinosaur to the Safari megatherium. I hope Collecta will make one next year, Incidentally the Kaiyodo one makes up for the megatherium deficiency today.

I think they will be CapsuleQ but aren't the two lines similar in size?

I'm not familiar with MiniQ, that's why I was curious.

Halichoeres

To the best of my knowledge, the only prehistoric figures in the MiniQ line are a Triceratops/Tyrannosaurus pair, which naturally never interested me, but they look to be about the same size: https://www.amazon.com/miniature-Cretaceous-Tyrannosaurus-Triceratops-pre-painted/dp/B01EFPO3ZS
