I've made up a flickr album with snaps of my day out at the exhibition last Saturday. Perhaps too "spoilery" if you are planning to visit, but if you can't make it in person they will at least give you an idea of the exhibits.

Here's the link:

You may not have known it at the time, but the man in the red trousers in the first image is Wang Qi, who initiated the project and co-curated it with me :)

Oh, and why didn't we take a photo of ourselves with the Sinraptor!? I think I was too distracted. Next time.

ceratopsian

No, I didn't realise it was him!  Thank you.  I should have guessed that he too would be eager to see how people were reacting on the first day.  And yes, I suppose we should have taken a photo of the pair of us - thought that as I uploaded my snaps to flickr.

Flaffy

Does anyone have photos of the gift shop? ;D

acro-man

What a wonderful exhibition!
It really turned me on by merely reading through your conversations.
Congrats everyone!
The biggest festival this year for dinosaur lovers I suppose.

I must get round to seeing those exciting photos somehow.
It's a shame Beijing never had such big shows.
They always take place in museums in remote places famous for dinosaur discoveries or Shanghai.

There is just one of a single stand with Safaris near the end of my Flickr album.

I always wrongly assumed that in Beijing you would have superb dinosaur exhibitions!

Does the IVPP have a good museum for the public?

Beijing has its fair share of dinosaur exhibits. The PMC at the IVPP, yes, it is pretty good. There is also the Beijing Museum of Natural History, and the Geological Museum of China, both have plenty of dinosaurs and fossils. I visited all three last year and was quite impressed.

ceratopsian

One day I would love to get to China and see some of these museums.  I'm most envious of you, dinotoyforum!

China is just a visa application and a flight away - the scariest and most difficult thing is the language barrier. I was lucky enough to be travelling with someone fluent.

Here is some more press following the launch of Dinosaurs of China last weekend.

A really great review of the exhibition in New Scientist ("Nottingham 1, rest of the world 0"):
https://www.newscientist.com/article/2139949-chinese-dinosaurs-make-a-historic-trip-to-the-uk/

An article in Guardian science blogs:
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/jul/05/feathered-dinosaurs-from-china-visit-the-uk

We're featured in the BBC World Service's Science in Action programme:

And there are some other nice articles by Museum Crush...

Yes, it's the language barrier and getting about once you are there.  I've travelled very widely but when we go to more off the beaten track places, we go with a specialist archaeological holiday firm that takes care of internal transport and logistics and sends an expert lecturer/guide with you.  There doesn't seem to be the same market for palaeontology trips!

Superb New Scientist review!

This exhibition is well worth a visit.  Definitely, one not to miss.

A series of free public palaeo-talks is accompanying the Dinosaurs of China exhibition in Nottingham. I kicked off proceedings this week by talking about the making of the exhibition and plesiosaurs. The series continues next week (Tuesday 18th July) with pterosaur specialist and palaeo-artist Mark Witton who is talking about pterosaurs. Details here: https://www.lakesidearts.org.uk/take-part-and-learn/event/3522/not-your-fathers-pterosaurs-how-scientists-are-reinterpreting-mesozoic-flying-reptiles.html I might take my copy of Pterosaurs and see if I can get it signed ;)

Other presenters in the series include Dean Lomax, Bob Nicholls, Steve Brusatte, and Dave Hone is pencilled in, too.

The talks are all free and aimed at a non-specialist audience. Please do come along to Lakeside Arts building on the University of Nottingham campus if you're in the area. Scroll down to 'Palaeo-talks' on the following page for the schedule: https://www.lakesidearts.org.uk/whats-on/dinosaurs-of-china.html

Man, you got a fully packed and intersting schedule there, wished I could attend anything of that.... and I wished German museums would just put half that effort into their program when there's some special dino exhibition. You really get the best out of all that it seems :)

By the way... what Mamenchisaurus species is it exhibited and do you know it's exact size/length? Also, as I cannot see that on the photos, does this specimen come with a "tail club"? I could not find anything about this feature as written description, but it seems Gregory Paul draw some Mamenchisaurus skeletons for his Field Guide with some kind of small club at the tip of their tails. Also, the new PNSO Mamenchisaurus boosts such...

The info I was given from the IVPP is:
The species is M. hochuanensis, it is 23m long (head to tail). In its rearing pose it stands 13m tall. It doesn't have a tail club, although that is a point of contention. At one point we were under the impression that it was going to have one - I had to edit the interpretation text at the last minute!

On the leaflet I picked up at Lakeside, it says that the talks are all being streamed live via their Facebook page.  But I can't turn up any info about this on-line.  Has the idea been abandoned?
