:) A lot of people on the blog developed their interest in dinosaurs from the Jurassic Park movie.  Many of them gradually left the blog and lost interest when dinosaurs became more and more feathered.  I don't think the general public cares about science.  What they want is fantasy and apparently they prefer dragons to birds.  Science fiction is not designed to be educational, it's designed purely as entertainment.  In the end the moviemakers try to give the public what they want, so they can make money.

stargatedalek

even documentaries are guilty of putting science aside for the sake of attracting more viewers (*looking at you planet dinosaur*)
science fiction is different in my opinion, so long as they don't claim to be accurate I'm fine with whatever they want to try and pass as a dinosaur

I thought that Planet Dinosaur was great.   If you want a bad documentary try Monsters Resurrected.

Honestly, I don't know if I Can trust any Educational channel these days.

*shivers* I remember that
animal planet is the worst of the lot IMO

Paleogene Pals

What? Educational TV putting out non-educational things? At least Discovery hasn't done a documentary on, say, mermaids or something.

stargatedalek

at least they never made a documentary pretending megalodon still existed ;)
let alone claiming that it was some giant behemoth that could take down humpback whale sized animals

Discovery is the company that owns and operates Animal Planet, and most of the other 'edutainment' channels. So when Animal Planet puts out dung, it came from the gut of Discovery. Imagery is everything.

Yeah, BBC is the only one that ever has any cool prehistory documentaries anymore (although Planet Dinosaur had quite a few inaccuracies), that's why I'm going to them with my series.

I had assumed sarcasm since they have aired "documentaries" about mermaids on discovery

perhaps this warrants its own discussion topic?

Paleogene Pals

So, I can safely assume that those documentaries on ancient aliens on History Channel are just pandering to the lowest common denominator. What's next? Professional wrestling is fake; news channels regularly putting out inaccurate news? A 'Walking with Dinosaurs' movie with talking dinosaurs?

Sigh, at least with JP, it is just a movie for entertainment. Therefore, I can tolerate raptors with no feathers that can open doors, Spinosaurus taking out T-rex, tripod brachiosaurs, etc...  I tell myself it's just a show and I should really just relax...

stargatedalek

I don't find opening doors unrealistic, if dogs, cats, corvids, parrots, cockatoos, squamates, and tortoises can I don't see why dromaeosaurs couldn't have
if a spinosaurus vs tyrannosaurus fight was to happen my money would be on spinosaurus, just saying
the JP spinosaurus is a conservative estimate and it has a sail rather than a ridge/hump, the real thing would probably have been significantly larger and most certainly bulkier than the JP version

I still would prefer a Jurassic Park with feathered Dinosaurs. A major feature film with them is needed.
For me it would however be enough if they atleast explained it in some way. Just a single line should be enough.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

stargatedalek

like how JP the game did, that would be the best option IMO

They really blew this....and should have done what they do with every other movie. You can go and choose wether to view in regular or 3-D....they could have made the movie either feathered or scaled, whichever option you prefer to watch and sat back and counted the bucks. Most people I know would pay to see both versions and compare. And this would have given them a solid opportunity to teach about dinosaurs at a very small price and little effort.....gosh guys get it together.
Authors with varying competence have suggested dinosaurs disappeared because of meteorites...God's will, raids by little green hunters in flying saucers, lack of standing room in Noah's Ark, and palaeoweltschmerz—Glenn Jepsen

CityRaptor

I don't think that would make sense, commercially.

stargatedalek

that would have been incredibly expensive, especially since they are using animatronics, it wouldn't just be changing some animation, the whole thing would have to be filmed at least twice

CityRaptor

They would also have to either use two sets of animatronics or have a way to change their skins.

that or add animated feathers afterwards, but that would look awful (and they still wouldn't be anatomically correct)

I really don't see the point in making two slightly different versions of the same film, no offense. Maybe they can include it as a DVD extra or something, but not as a theatrical release.

stargatedalek

I just don't see it being cost effective in any capacity to have 2 versions
