Final review of 2021, and it's an interesting one, a paint-it-yourself Brachiosaurus!

Thanks everyone for the continued amazing content. I love reading the reviews so much. For me, written reviews are so much preferred over video reviews. From Yowie to PNSO, each and every one is a delight.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who prefers written reviews to YouTube videos!

I've never watched an entire video review in my life. I only fast forward to when they compare the subject to other toys. Otherwise I have no use for them.

Just chiming in to say I prefer a bit of both written and video. I think videos are good for getting to look at figures in a more 3D space (give or take comparisons if any, but that can be done with the written + image format as well), but my attention span at times is pretty short, made worse from my general lack of interest as comes with depression these days, so written reviews usually gets the info across faster for me (unless said video is pretty short, but most are usually 10+ mins long). That said I do appreciate the effort that goes into making either format, and I think it is good to that there's options out there for both types of folks. I do think the blog wins out on sheer number of obscure brands or figures however, including many older ones, that typically don't ever get video reviews, so that is especially handy.

I also noticed a lack of vintage figures being reviewed on Youtube avatar_Faelrin @Faelrin . I even thought about doing video reviews on them myself.

10+ minutes! This past year I recorded a video showing first year university students how to conduct and interpret a t-test, and it was barely longer than that.

My first review of the year is none other than the new CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus!

Congrats on your first review for the year being that big brute of an Edmontosaurus. Really appreciate all the comparisons, especially with their Iguanodon.

My congratulations for your review, you have scientific knowledge to spare and you also have an enormous intellectual baggage when it comes to describing the product and for the richness of vocabulary, on the other hand you are an expert person in describing a toy figure with precision. Keep it up you're great!

Brocc21

Very tempted to pick up the Edmontosaurus. But the green paint is such a big turn off for me. It sticks out like a sore thumb and doesn't cohesively blend in with the rest of the figure, especially the green on the flanks. If I was just the face and feet I think it'd look better. Maybe it'll grow on me. Other than that its an improvement over the 2020 Safari figure.

I've gone back and revised the section about the "hooves" in light of some crucial information that Thomas Holtz passed on to me today. It would appear that CollectA, along with a great many people, may have jumped the gun.  :-\

Thanks for the update, avatar_suspsy @suspsy . I'll hold off a while before making any ammendations to the hands of my Safari figure, until we get a bit more certainty (hopefully from more than one fossil specimen). Heavy nails do seem plausible, but maybe not hooves per se.

I was under the impression that the only reason the term "hoof" is commonly circulated is because it's a close enough analogy, rather than it representing the actual morphology of the forelimb itself. Like, a "hoof-like structure" is certainly easier to explain, and visualize for non-paleo savy people as opposed to explaining how weird the actual thing was. Similar case to the "hooved crocodiles" of Planocraniidae. Was not aware that the term "hoof" was taken rather literally.

Accurate(?)

vs

Innacurate

Re-examining the forelimbs of the figure, the nail doesn't cover the bottom of the digit completely. The fleshy weight bearing pad is still present. I think only the shape of the hoof itself is subject to debate as to whether it's accurate or not.

Digit 2 however has issues. It's supposed to look more flat and spade like, rather than a pointed conical spike/spur. I believe this misconception stems from the angle of most images of the Dakota specimen. Where only the edge of Digit 2 is captured, i.e. a profile shot. I don't think there are any good images of a "head-on" view of digit 2 available at the moment, though the first illustration posted above gives a decent approximation of it's actual shape when viewed in different angles.
