Tylosaurus (Recur)

…ecies, and there is speculation that it may have possessed more of a paddle-shaped tail, but when it comes down to it, I just think it would have looked a whole lot cooler with a tail like that on the Wild Safari version pictured above. The Recur Tylosaurus may never win a prize for sculpting or detailing or scientific accuracy, but there’s no question that it’s a fun and durable toy for children. For certain it’s racked up a good many hours with…

Quetzalcoatlus (Papo)

…te paint applications and transitions, and the ultra-details, very few toy companies come close to the levels seen in their models. And that is what makes thier figures awesome! With their passing, no other animal as large as them would ever conquer the skies, a true testament to ultimate pterosaur evolution. Quetzalcoatlus and other Azhdarchids will dominate the skies for millions of years until the end of the age of dinosaurs, casting shadows fa…

Pinacosaurus (PNSO)

…loch. Bart’s back is decked out in an alternating pattern of black, reddish-brown, and pale olive green with thin white stripes for good measure. His pink-lined eyes are glossy black and his beak is splashed with light brown. His limbs are mostly dull dark green and his underbelly is greyish-green along with some faint brown around his joints and on his cloaca. Finally, his claws, the tips of the many scutes running along his flanks and tail, and

Great Auk (Forgotten Friends Series A by Yowie)

…isn’t terrible here, but it does have flaws. The neck is too thick and the feet suffer a similar issue. It is too penguin like, whereas the Auk is more like seabirds like the Razorbill. Though the Auk lived like a penguin and inspired their name, they are not related. The rest is pretty good, the body, wings and bill being spot on. Not bad, but could do with work. I do like the feather effects on the chest, wings and tail though, looks quite right…

Rugops (Jurassic World: Ferocious Pack by Mattel)

…wever it should be two and not just a single one. The teeth as well as the feet are very oversized. At least for the feet, that’s usually for stability, although my Rugops still has a tendency to fall over due to one leg being slightly warped. But looking at other people’s images, this seems to be a rare issue and nothing that can’t be fixed with a bit of hot water. The neck and body could maybe be a bit more slender, but in itself, the silhouette…

Styracosaurus Maquette by Sideshow Dinosauria

…tail across the animal’s head and body to the detail on the lower legs and feet. There’s no contest. It just seems as if it could have done with some pebbling or creasing to ensure that observers see those extremities as biological extensions of the organism, and not merely anchors to the base. Just a thought, but I feel a bit more time could have been taken there. Another nitpick of mine is on the horns of the Styracosaurus. If you have the flags…

Micromachines dinosaurs (National Geographic Collection/ Micromachines)

…, and all quite similar in colour. The quadropedal figures in the line are freestanding but the bipedal ones are attached to a simple grey supporting base. Set 1 (pictured below, mint in box), contains Protoceratops, Ceratosaurus and a pterosaur. The skeletons are white with speckled dark bits. The pterosaur is interesting because transparent plastic indicates the outlines of the wing membranes. The details are general very fine and pretty accurat…

Deinonychus (Carnage Dinosaurs by ReSaurus/Toysmith)

…opulated by Velociraptor toys everywhere you look. I just did a quick eBay search and didn’t see any Deinonychus on there. But oh boy, do some of these go for a lot mint-in-box. This makes me very thankful I own the entire line already. If you’re looking for one, I wish you luck. …

Hyaenodon (AAA)

…the right length. The pose is nothing special. The animal may be prowling, communicating with a member of the pack or simply walking in search of a waterhole. The colouring resembles the one from the show: the underside is yellow, the claws are grey and the rest of the body is light brown and covered in black stripes. The eyes are brown with black pupils, the inside of the mouth has a fleshy pink tone and the teeth are yellowish. The genitals are…

Saurolophus (Favorite Co. Ltd.)

…she approaches, the adults start to call. Their loud honking sounds are welcoming and comforting to our young female. Once back in the safety of the herd, she finally looks back toward the distant lake and forest. Perhaps she does so to remember this place, and to remember both the opportunities it offered as well as the dangers hidden in its dark shadows. She will forever remember this experience, one that taught her a valuable life experience. A…

Guidraco (Age of the Dinosaurs by PNSO)

…athery appearance. The same texture is used for his body, which is a bit disappointing. Perhaps the sculptor felt pycnofibres wouldn’t work out well at this scale? There is also visible shrink-wrapping on Yusen’s skull, namely the fenestrae. On a more positive note, the intermeshed teeth have been fairly well sculpted. Overall, this does indeed look like a Guidraco, although the wings are significantly wider than on most other restorations I’ve se…

Yangchuanosaurus (Jurassic World: Dominion, Massive Action by Mattel)

…oy is somewhat limited due to its action feature. The arms can swing in-and-out and rotate around. The legs do not rotate completely around or independently of each other. Moving one moves the other, but the legs can move far enough forward to position the head downwards, or far enough back that the dinosaur can stand upright. The ankles can rotate around too. As usual, Mattel has taken some artistic liberties with this toy. You’ve no doubt notice…

Daspletosaurus (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd.)

…to be the most tedious in all of paleobiology, and those who decide to contest it in the comments will be talking among themselves.  skull of cf. Daspletosaurus specimen at Field Museum, photograph by the author, June 2021 A selection of Campanian animals: Styracosaurus, Struthiomimus, Stegoceras, Edmontosaurus This figure is well-proportioned and works out to about 1:35 scale. This puts it reasonably in scale with a few contemporaries, such as P…

Oviraptor (CollectA)

…tail. The body is covered in a fine coating of plumage and the fingers and feet have faint wrinkles. The feathers on the wings and the tail fan are well sculpted, although it’s harder to tell due to all the colours painted over them. Accuracy-wise, this Oviraptor scores reasonably well. It’s certainly unmistakable as an oviraptorosaur, the hands are appropriately large, and the impressive tail fan is in keeping with feather impressions and pygosty…

Micro Tiere Collection (Bullyland)

…eviously reviewed Apatosaurus. I’ll basically reiterate what Libra said by commenting on its compact and heavy build in addition to the attention to detail on an otherwise small figure. The neck is particularly thick and the hide wrinkly. The head has a classic Brontosaurus look to it which adds a lot of character. It’s brown in color, dark dorsally and lighter towards the belly. Really there is no reason not to add this collection of little dinos…

Pachycephalosaurus (Version 1, Carnegie Collection by Safari Ltd)

…ficult to achieve. As such, the Pachycephalosaurus is mounted on an earthen-shaped stand. The main colours on this toy are grey and black with dark purple shading along the sides and on the hands and feet. The claws are black. The head features white knobs, black stripes, yellow eyes, pink for the open mouth, white teeth, and a splash of purple on the cranium. A decent colour scheme, though not an exciting one. In 1996, the toy was repainted with…

Tyrannosaurus rex (DINO by Lego)

…t, Doc. But as with all the Lego dinosaurs we’ve covered, this one doesn’t come cheap. A quick eBay search just might make you cry. You may still be able to locate the Jurassic World sets in stores, but those aren’t easy on the wallet either!” “Lego certainly is an expensive hobby, Beth. But it is everlasting fun.” “Yeppers. And on that note, your Majesty, I think it’s time for us to call it a wrap. Later, folks! And here, girl, have some grub. Yo…

Triceratops (CollectA)

…orth picking up if you can find it. It is from 2006, so it has long been retired, hence why a newer figure was made. In spite of the stoic pose, I do recommend this figure. It is best to search eBay for this figure if you want it….

Tyrannosaurus rex (2007)(Schleich)

…guably the best known dinosaur, the one that the average, non-qualified man-in-the-street is more often than not able to put a name to, formally named in 1905 by Henry Fairfield Osborn (derived from the Greek and translated as “tyrant lizard”), the first remains being found by Barnum Brown in 1900 in eastern Wyoming, then in Montana in 1902. Such was the fascination and appeal of this animal that it soon cemented its place in popular culture, appe…

Yangchuanosaurus (Dinosaur King by Sega)

…es are that the neck is too short and the hands are pronated. Other than that, not bad. This is a decent figure with a great colour scheme, though not without problems. mine seems to have warped feet, making it hard to stand. I still recommend it to those who want it. Best to search eBay, as the Sega Dinosaur King figures are becoming rarer. Happy hunting!…
