JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH---posters released for the sequel starring Scarlett Johansson.

Quote from: Libraraptor on May 21, 2025, 08:35:23 PMI do not like the trailer. I don´t like what the franchise has become. I won´t be watching this movie, not at all in the cinema.
In a broader approach, it seems to be an inevitable issue with any franchise ?

The first part usually appeals, thanks to an innovative/disruptive idea, whereas the next parts tend to become cash drawers as they more often appear to be attempts to make something new, of less quality, out of the old.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no exception that proves this rule, so far...
However, JWR may be worth a viewing, just by curiosity, and for Scarlett Johansson lol

I'm sorry but these posters, especially the one pictured here, are just terrible.

This is some incredibly low effort cut-and-paste, basic Photoshop collage work.

This is a major studio, big budget movie! With A-list stars! At least try a little bit with your posters.

As many have pointed out previously, since before the release of the first Jurassic World in 2015, this franchise has become a hilariously ironic parallel of the universe it depicts on screen.

To paraphrase Dr. Ian Malcolm in the first JP film: "They stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as they could and before they even knew what they had, they patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now they're selling it, they want to sell it!"
Case in point = the Indominus Rex, which is arguably the second most recognized pop-culture dinosaur besides Rexy.

Then Claire Dearing re-iterated this point when she said that the public is getting bored with dinosaurs and already look at a Stegosaurus the same way they view an elephant at the zoo. They need something new to generate interest.

Now the Jurassic World franchise has run out of giant theropods to pit against T. rex, so they are literally making up new ones that they can own the rights to and market: Indoraptor, Scorpius rex, Distortus rex, mutadons, etc. New dinosaurs mean new toys.

I know I have said it before that dinosaur movies adhere to one of three general plotlines:
  • dinosaur goes on a journey or quest
  • dinosaurs versus people conflict
  • people help dinosaur on a quest while clashing with other dinosaurs

The JW franchise falls generally with choice #2 (with TLW:JP possibly being #3). And that trope has been done to death. We can make anything with CGI and special effects, but in order to spice things up, they have to come up with new species. And the audience wants something big. Personally, a stampeding herd of sauropods sounds absolutely terrifying but not enough to keep people coming back for more. We identify with predators because humans are predators. We want the battle royale. We want the monsters. And if it's one thing Gareth Edwards can do well, it is monsters.

All in all, I intend to see the new film with my son. We know it's science fiction and popcorn fodder. I don't take it seriously. If we want a documentary to watch, we can re-watch Prehistoric Planet, and the other new ones that have been released recently. These films are still an excellent talking point to bring up how real dinosaurs looked and behaved.

So personally, I do not hate that there are hybrids in this film. What I am a little miffed about is that Colin Trevorrow stated that there wouldn't be any more after JW:FK. Now, he may have been referring to his trilogy, which technically ended with JW:D. He may not have even been aware of what Rebirth would be at that point when he said that. That's why I said a little miffed.

Mentally, I just started putting these films in the same category as King Kong (2005) and the monsterverse. When I do that, I tend to enjoy them a little easier that way.

Jurassic World was always more preoccupied with trying to justify its own existence than being either a compelling story or a worthy expansion of Jurassic Park, and indeed, a lot of the things it tries to say are nonsensical, to the point that it repeatedly contradicts itself. The whole "people are tired of dinosaurs" thing is just... Wrong, especially beyond narrow franchises like Jurassic World where dinosaurs are by default seen as nothing more than another random movie monster with the side flavour of also appearing in edutainment media. People may get tired of dinosaurs as 'another roaring rabid movie monster' because, lets face it, if a piece of media depicts them like that, they could have just use dragons instead for far greater returns, or made up their own monster for greater merchandising potential.
Dinosaurs are kinda doomed to fail as 'pure monsters'.
Dinosaurs do not spit fire, they rarely fly (and tend to be tiny if they do), and they don't have funky stuff like tentacles or extra eyeballs or whatever.
This same fate has befallen modern Predators as well - you get a Jaws or a Revenant every so often, but at large? They can not measure up to the might of human imagination.

What, then, instead, fuels the success of great stories like Jurassic Park and The Land before time?
Character.
Ellie Sattler and Alan Grant do more for the franchise than Claire and Owen ever could have, and they do this in a single movie - lets face it, their Dominion appearance had them replaced with fanfic-esque husks of themselves. For all it's sins, Jurassic Park 3 does at least do well by Grants character even if most of the other characters are a waste of screentime. Malcolm did get The Lost World to expand on his character, but mostly, the original three managed to reach the heights they did in just one movie (same for the kids and quite a few minor characters). They are the backbone of the first movie and a stablizing force in the first two sequels.

...Except...
Owen and Claire could have had similar staying power. If the effort and skill had been there.
And similarly, the Rebirth characters could, too, even if they only appear in this one movie and then never again. So I dunno, don't feel bad about giving it a chance, I guess. Or, if you're like me, waiting to see what reviewers think about it and then decide further on that whole "chance giving business" once that's sorted.  :*D

I kinda also wanted to go into a talk about how dinosaurs are characters, what that means for Blue, and what that means for documentaries like WWD and PrePlanet; or indeed, even real life animal documentaries like Blue Planet or Planet Earth or whatever; but I feel like that would be just a little bit too far from the main topic, so. Let me just say 'Wild Animal experiencing animal things' is also a type of character that is distinct from Mindless Movie Monsters or Big Scaly Dogs like Blue and leave it at that.

Dilopho

We're in that part of the marketing where they are starting to post too many clips.
They just posted even MORE clips of the T. rex sequence, so we have pretty much the full sequence now. Lol  :*D

And I can't help but watch them. I'm like a magnet to these things because I'm so concerned about seeing dinosaurs dying.
I feel like I have to scope it out to get over it in advance if it happens. Dinosaurs dying can ruin a scene for me.

It's like Land of the Lost, I absolutely love the ridiculous scene with the T. rex and Allosaurus chasing Marshall, but I feel awful at the end when they blow the Allosaurus up with nitrogen. When I was younger, that made me cry.

I'm really scared in case they kill off this new T. rex which I have become very attached to.

You have to remember the whole "people are tired of dinosaurs" reasoning for the Indominus rex is from Claire, at a point in time where the dinosaurs are nothing but assets to bring in money for Masrani

Of course people arent tired of dinosaurs, but companies go after what's profitable. And Masrani is a man child who wants people to be shocked and awed by "cool" dinosaurs.

I don't think it's intended to be meta commentary. They do continue to show dinosaurs as animals and part of Fallen Kingdom's message is that they don't deserve to live with us because of how we would mistreat them

I'm also disappointed with how they are portrayed sometimes, for example the Baryonyx in Fallen Kingdom which is really over the top. But they do make a genuine effort here and there. Hopefully with Gareth Edwards helming Rebirth, a better effort will be made.

Blade-of-the-Moon

Claire's argument is based in a world that has know Dinosaurs exist since 1997 and they have been in an actual theme park for awhile by the time the film takes place. I don't think it's totally of base. Look at modern zoos, they do still get attendance, but it spikes when a new animal or exhibit opens.  I do think JW was a pretty spot on parody of a real theme park situation. I recall not caring much about the Indominus but when I noticed the Frankenstein Monster parallels, it grew on me.

Masrani was doing his best to be John Hammond, who is a bit of an innocent, he's impressed by his own abilities.

I REALLY wish they had sidelined Owen for more of Claire's story as outlined in the novel, The Evolution of Claire. Made you see she was the main character here and the movies/stories are about her growth.

Giganotosaurus

The Rebirth Spinosaurus's are way too small, if they wanted to have 3 smaller Spinosaurs they should have used 3 Suchomimus's. At least then we'd have a new (real) carnivore introduced in this film.

So far, considering that Titanosaurus is a dubious genus, we only have 1 new (real) dinosaur in the movie: a baby aquilops. And we might not even get any adults of that species!!

Part of the fun of new Jurassic movies for me are the new dinosaurs added.

I was very disappointed that Jurassic World had only 1 new (real) dinosaur: the Apatosaurus. But at least World also introduced the Mosasaurus and Dimorphodon.

Angurius on TohoKingdom

I love all the Jurassic movies, plus Disney's Dinosaur

Trenchcoated Rebbachisaur

I mean, considering how tiny Aquilops is, I'm not sure Dolores (or whatever her name is) will actually be a baby.
Personally I also don't see the point in disqualifying Titanosaurus for being a dubious genus - considering how little JW dinosaurs tend to match their real life counterparts, you can always just pretend this animal was actually meant to be one of the genera that got split out of Titanosaurus. Or hell, even that they got mosquitoes from the location where the dubious tooth of dubious tooth taxon fame was found, and matched the teeth.
Given that it appears to not only be canon that Deinonychus got lumped into Velociraptor, but also that they have a "Compsognathus triassicus", I feel like the real life rules of nomenclature were quietly thrown out the window in the Jurassic Cinematic Universe.

I don't mind not getting many new dinosaur species in each new film. I think the last two movies introduced a lot of redundant dinosaurs (Sinoceratops, Nasutoceratops, Atrociraptor, Stygimoloch) that made each one feel less special and unique. Even the dilophosaurus, as different as it is from the raptors, was given its frill to set it apart from them. I think the best new species for them to add would be those that are unique from what we've seen, such as smilodon. Though it would definitely also be great to see long-time established canon species we haven't seen yet like Edmontosaurus or the rest of the original Nublar lineup.

This 1 includes a full-body look at Rebirth's Aquilops (which still doesn't look as cool as real Aquilops, but at least isn't just JWD's Microceratus like I originally thought: https://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=11253.msg392579#msg392579 ):

There's our first proper look at Velociraptor.

PrimevalRaptor

As disappointed as I am in more scaly raptors (they could have totally explained feathered raptors in a "oh well that's how they originally looked but we made them more scaly to fit with the perception back then" way but alas) I do gotta say this design has grown on me a lot.
Think the JP3 ones are still my favorite followed by the TLW one but those guys may be in third place, the splash of color on the face is really nice.

Faelrin

The raptor design is so good for a Jurassic series raptor. No more too many teeth like the JW ones. That was the one thing I was kind of worried about honestly, because of the prior promo pic, which seems to have been designed over or based on one of Blue's renders. Can't wait to drop these in with the classic JPIII ones in JWE3.

The T. rex head is looking a little weird here to me, but it looks really good in the trailers we've seen, so I'm not like concerned about it lol.

Man I'm actually excited for the little Aquilops too. Almost gives me baby Bumpy and Smoothie vibes. Again, need a plushie of this one.

I have to say that I'm really enjoying this black spino, it's really cool looking

It has the best colour scheme imo out of the three and it has some really cool proportions, and the horn too ^^

Gwangi

I love the frill design on the new Dilophosaurus, I hope we get a toy of it. I don't think any new Dilophosaurus toys have been announced.

Yeah not yet, only the mini that's included with the Mosaurus, but it's the old design from Fallen Kingdom

If one shows up, I'm expecting it to be alongside the older daughter character Teresa, she doesn't have a figure either and is the only one of the main cast to not have one
