Personally I never got into Transformers until the first movie came out.

During that time I was into Bionicle, which was a bio mechanical character line from Lego.  I loved the Bionicle line, and there was no major media tie ins like a TV Show. They did try to make a series of straight to DVD movies, but they stopped at only 3 of them at the time.  After the third movie, I was dyeing for another one, but they just did not care. The closest thing to another Bionicle Movie was the first Transformers in 2007.  I loved that movie because the Robots reminded me of the Bionicle Characters, and I wish they had the same big screen treatment as Transformers did.  As soon as That movie came out on DVD I watched it EVERYDAY for several weeks.

Its because of Bionicle that I Wanted to see more of the Transformers movies, and in 2009 I seen the second film at midnight, and I admit, it was a downgrade from the first one, but I still liked it. But then later that year, there was a surprise for me. It was a Brand New Bionicle Movie. It seemed that Lego had decided to make a new series of movies with the help of a brand new studio(The studio that's responsible for All of the Lego TV shows on TV today). The new movie was straight to DVD again but there were special showings in selected theaters. Things seemed great for a Bionicle Fan like me, but in November of that year Lego announced that they were canceling Bionicle

To make things Shorter, I now cherish the Transformers movies like they were Bionicle which was a big part of me since it was introduced in 2001.   Right now I find it Spooky that after Bionicle, I got into collecting all sorts of Dinosaur figures, and then it is reviled that there will be Dinobots in the 4rth Transformers movie.

The transformers, the original ones, all began as toys that were for the most part not selling well. The transformers cartoons took this group of toys and made them into characters, in a sense creating a thirty minute toy commercial. The show that followed it was GI Joe on weekdays, so you got an hour long non stop toy commercial. If you listen closely many of the voices for the two shows are even the same. The original perceptor character was a black microscope, the original Shockwave was known as Galactic Man and was sold at Radio Shack. The original Megatron was a highly accurate Pistol with stock, sight, and silencer. The pre transformer version even fired small plastic bullets. The original Jetfire, was a Matsushiro Valkyrie Veritech fighter. Sky Lynx and Omega Supreme were made by a company called Toybox. Even the original Optimus Prime was originally intended to be a huge robot with a crew of pilots. The trailer of the truck had metal panels, on the insides rather than stickers, so the small pilots, with magnets in their feet could stand on them. The original dinobots were a set of robots as well, that included small pilots. It is not that odd that dinosaurs were added to transformers, as they have always been there since the start. They never imported some of the characters from the Japanese line to the US or we would have had a large robot formed from I believe five dinosaurs , another set that is very rare.
I have always wondered how they would deal with Soundwave and blaster. Both were casette players, in the original series, and could eject cassettes that transformed into various animals. I had always hoped they could be updated to modernistic CD type players and the discs would be the animals. I believe they did try this a few times, but the result as far as the animals was not as well done. I had hoped they might bring back the cassettes that Soundwave had used....Slugfest and Overkill...a T-rex and a Stegosaurus !!!! There was also a cassette only marketed in Japan , that formed two seperate dinosaurs, and could combine to make one larger one....it is exceptionally rare and I was never able to get it . And of course you had Trypticon the massive decepticon base, not to mention the dozens of incarnations of dinosaurs in the series since then.

I loved bionicle, but my mom gave my whole collection away! :( it's starting to slowly grow again...
I may not like feathered dinosaurs and stumpy legged Spinosaurs, but I will keep those opinions to myself, I will not start a debate over it, I promise. 😇

Just built this beautiful standee at work:

I'm not into Trannies, but this looks gorgeous! Otherwise I have little hope for this film. It looks like a rehash of the previous flicks, except now alien robots can also change into prehistoric Earth animals aside from contemporary Earth vehicles. Sense it still makes little.  ::)

Usally the existence of Dinobots makes sense in context.
In the G1 Cartoon they simply built them. Prime thought it was a good idea...
In the Marvel Comics, they were part of the original Crew and were activated earlier to fight Shockwave, who arrived in the Savage Land. They were reformated based on the dominant lifeforms of that place.
In Transformers Animated they were a trio of animatronic dinosaurs rebuilt into drones and later got Sparks ( basically Transformers lifeforce/ souls )
IDW  had them hunt for Shockwave and arriving on Earth during the Ice Age. There was however a problem with radiation and they had to adapt modes based on Earth Animals with synthetic skin.  Grimlock however refused to take on a Mammalian form and instead they opted to scan some fossils.
In the aligned continuity, it is due to an experiment by Shockwave.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

I have not seen or care to see any of the Bayformer movies, but I have to say the G1 1986 movie had an awesome soundtrack. I love "The Touch" by Stan Bush.

Ironically, while it was not the musical tracks but the actual soundtrack of the movie that caused a huge controversy when the film was released. There are several scenes within the movie that contain profanity and caused a stir. Nowdays it is common to find either version for sale, the edited "Clean" version or the original profanity version.  I do agree some of the music for the original was quite well crafted.

Raphael in the TMNT movie did it too (although it wasn't quite as strong). It doesn't bother me personally but it does come across as a bit unnecessary for something aimed at kids (especially the use of the "s" word).

There were a number of them in the transformers movie and parents even boycotted the movie in theaters in some cities, but that was in the eighties. I wonder if nowdays people would even notice.

Atleast it makes sense in context. For swearing Transformers, it usually was Slag ( as in the wasteproduct from refining metallic ores ). That's right, the name of one of the Dinobots is a swearword, kinda fitting, given that it was the most pychopathic one, whose official function is flamethrower....Nowadays, given that it is also an actual insult in the UK,  it seems to be replaced by Scrap, with the Dinobot being named Slug.

Lol, it just makes me laugh. I can't help but giggle at the name, it seems as though the creators are insulting their own character by naming him that.

Slag is probably also what comes to mind if he charges at you. Out of the G1 Dinobots, he is the  nastiest and most agressive one. And a fire-spitting Triceratops.

Do we have a thread dedicated to Transformers in general? We have one for Godzilla, so why not? :) I did a search but couldn't find anything.

amargasaurus cazaui

If someone throws up a thread, I have been considering photgraphing mine for the forum anyway. I have all the original G1 guys in the boxes more or less, and some of the other transformers as well. Fort maximus, Soundwave, Devastator, Bruticus, Wheeljack, Sunstreaker, Mirage, Blaster etc

This is awesome:

I didn't realise Gipsy Danger was so huge. And Optimus Prime may be one of the smallest, but in my mind he is the most awesome >:D

Cool graphic. I didn't realize Gipsy Danger was so big either. Also...I have zero interest in the Transformers movies, hated the first one. Didn't even watch the cartoon as a kid for some reason (I fit the age demographic for the time). I'm not even sure what compelled me to stop by here except that Grimlock does look awesome!

Fair enough I guess....but if I may say so, don't judge the entire franchise by the Bayformer movies.

I don't. I'm sure I would have loved the cartoon and toys when I was younger, I just never got into it for some reason. Too busy watching other cartoons. A bit more difficult to get into something like that once you're already an adult.

I can somewhat identify with what you are saying Gwangi, my real fascination with the transformers was the original series one toys. They were simply masterpieces of engineering, combining multiple points of articulation with a frame that could form two, three or even four identities. Most of them used metal , and were riveted, bolted and screwed together rather than cast, or mold from cheap plastic. Most of the series one toys were quite intricate, and loaded with chrome and were often functional...ie, working wheels, opening doors, etc. The original group of transformers as toys will alway be collectible because many of them simply cannot and never will be reproduced within the US again due to toy safety laws and restrictions. They were original and quite ahead of their time, but sadly went the way of the dinosaurs once Hasbro bought the rights to it all and canned most of the original figures, so they could replace them with cheap alternates.
It was never so much the characters or stories for me as the incredible detail and work that went into the figures.

I can see why you would appreciate higher quality toys like that. I wish I was into it at the time but I didn't even have the toys. Maybe if I had we would be having a different conversation.
