Jurassic World discussion (spoilers)

Just because they excuse it in canon (it also took nearly 25 years before that happened!) does not mean the films as a concept should be entirely free from scientific scrutiny. In-universe justifications only go so far, so far as to declare Jurassic Park as a monster movie and not a "dinosaur movie". I have nothing against monster movies, but assuming it had comparable production value I'd vastly prefer a dinosaur movie. The books did make an effort to incorporate a fair bit of current science, they weren't perfect by any means but they were more than a few steps ahead of the movies in that regard.

In regards to potential spin-offs, I can't help but feel this whole buzz over hybrids could very easily translate into another Chaos Effect program. We know there's a big interest in darker animated programs these days (which was something IIRC the creators had hoped to aim for) so I really think it could do well.

Darker is certainly the route we're going down.  Don't forget we actually had dinosaurs being shot and blown up in this film..something never done in any of the previous ones..felt like sort of a line they never crossed.

If we get different companies making tweaked dinosaurs I could see feathered ones making an appearance then..they would have an excuse and could use both types.

Snarkeet

For me the absence of feathers is more of a continuity thing. I think it would be pretty weird if Jurassic World had completely altered the look of the dinosaurs because Jurassic Park dinosaurs have their own iconic designs. It would have come off as kind of jarring for me. On the other hand it would've been fine if they acknowledged it in-universe. They could say that after the first Jurassic Park incident there were more discoveries on what dinosaurs really looked like and InGen's geneticists modified the park dinosaurs accordingly. Would have been an interesting commentary on how the first movie affected the real-world public's view on dinosaurs, and would have justified the Indominus's existence.

But in my eyes Jurassic Park was always a monster movie. A dinosaur-themed sci-fi monster movie, but still a monster movie. Dilophosaurus didn't spit venom or have a frill. Dromeosaurs weren't smarter than dolphins. T. rex could see you just fine. If the dinosaurs were made perfectly accurate, I'd feel like we'd have an entirely different franchise.

I highly doubt it. It was actually going to be in JW until Colin Trevorrow nixed the idea.

Speaking of shooting dinosaurs while a lot of people here were groaning about scientific inaccuracies the moment that made me groan was when the guy with the bazooka couldn't hit the 40 plus foot Indominus rex at close range but he could nail the 9 foot long raptor that was giving Owen a loving look dead on from the distance of a football field or more! But that's showbiz.

I may be a little late posting my thoughts on this film...  But here is what I posted on Facebook a couple of days after I watched this for the first time.   I typed this in response when I heard others comparing this film to last year's Legendary Godzilla.  (There is NO comparison, IMO).

And I know the film isn't scientifically accurate... I knew that prior to going in.  But I wasn't expecting it to be and I rated it based on sci-fi entertainment only!!! ;)

Okay, now that almost everyone has seen Jurassic World... I thought I'd add my 2 cents about it! Simply put.... I LOVED IT!!! This is what a TRUE Jurassic Park sequel should have been in the first place! Its VERY action packed and the visuals (like the original) were STUNNING! This is the film Godzilla 2014 SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!! Perhaps the people at Legendary will take heed of what just happened over the week with JW's EXPLOSIVE success!!! (SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS YET!!!)

Did anyone tear up upon seeing the mortally wounded Apatosaurus? I did. The creature's facial expression and moans of discomfort really struck deep with me. Actually made me dislike the genetically enhanced Indominus a lot! She's a true villain that's not even human!

I also liked how the lack of feathers is explained in the film too! I always loved paleontology and earth sciences but this is an action film based loosely on facts. Can be please simply ENJOY this without getting too technical? Suspend your reality!

BUT what I'm mostly ecstatic about is that my FAVORITE dinosaur of all time, the Tyrannosaurus, has earned her respect back with Hollywood! The end fight with Indominus was incredible! Also, her entrance before the fight began by smashing through the Spinosaurus skeleton was a cool middle finger to that craptastic Jurassic Park III film! So glad the true King (Oops.... QUEEN) of the Dinosaurs is back! The old girl never looked better! It fact, I felt giddy when she was released from her containment bay because I knew what was coming next!!!!

Chris Pratt was a perfect lead man for this project and now starring in the biggest opening of all time too! I salute you Chris!

The overall movie is a fantastic ride! Congratulations to everyone involved with the entire film! You definitely earned all of this success and THANK YOU for breathing life back into this franchise again! 22 years was a long wait but a worthwhile one!

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!

As for the rumors of the sequel containing genetically altered Dino Monsters?  I personally seeing that is one of the only directions the studio can go that will be different and fresh.  Sort of the "Chaos Effect" toy line years ago.  Not sure if that will be the right direction, but an interesting one.  I just hope we don't see anything like "Biollante" (Any Godzilla fans out there?) which may be a little over the top for a JP film.

I had thought it was in the movie, as an image on one of the computer monitors at one point, was thinking I saw that.
Authors with varying competence have suggested dinosaurs disappeared because of meteorites...God's will, raids by little green hunters in flying saucers, lack of standing room in Noah's Ark, and palaeoweltschmerz—Glenn Jepsen

It did get a cameo as one of the designs on the genetics lab computer screen. But early on there was a scene planned that had Claire and Owen stumbling across one in the restricted area when searching for the kids; this was later scrapped.

I guess someone had to do it.
I still loved the movie though.:D

This only makes me love "Jurassic World" even more because without it, this parody wouldn't exist.

During that scene where Owen and the mercenaries are all just sitting there watching the Freakosaurus stare down the raptors, it took all my effort to keep from shouting out, "SHOOT ALREADY! JUST SHOOT THEM ALL!"

I've been waiting to hear this news! JW has now become the 3rd highest grossing movie of all-time, with a worldwide box office now sitting at $1.522 billion! Nice to have some dinos represented back at the top again! :))

BTW, just watched that "High Heels" edition vid.... HYSTERICAL! Hahahaha!!! ;D

Pachyrhinosaurus

Before it came out and even after the explosive first weekend, I never thought JW would gross this much. I did expect it to be above JP but that's about it. Now I'm wondering if it will join Avatar and Titanic in the $2 billion club. Probably not, but then that's what I thought about JW being where it is now.

It really pisses me off that merchandize for this film is so hard to find. Not a single "Jurassic World" at Target, Wal-Mart or anywhere else I've looked. I feel like the marketing team behind this stuff really dropped the ball and that this movie was bigger than even they anticipated. Even the toys have been pushed out now, like "Jurassic World" never happened. This was certainly not the case in 1993 with "Jurassic Park". Aside from the toys, if you could put a JP logo on it, they made it and sold it.

This is more than a little worrying, I pushed off buying things to get better deals in the States next week...

Man I can't tell you how much I agree with you. In 93' there was JP EVERYTHING! There are so many merchandising opportunists that have missed here it's ridiculous. I just came back from walmart today, they had some JW stickers in the back to school area, no folders, notebooks, pencil cases, ect..just minions, cars, disney and turtles..oh and star wars..already.  The toys, they had restocked chomping rexes and raptor claws with a few of the 15 pack blind bags finally..but that was it.  I've been looking for books, keychains, pins, hats..and nothing. I'm hoping in a couple weeks while I'm on a trip I'll find some stuff in the tourist mecca of gatlinburg/pigeon forge.  Looking back at the licensing expos we haven't seen of the birthday party supplies on store shelves, none of the big trapper keeper like folders, ect..all stuff that was shown but not available. You know I can't a JW poster locally? A friggin' poster with the logo on it..nowhere.  That's inexcusable. So is the quality of what we did get. :/

Hit walmarts, targets, and toysrus is the best places to look is all I can really say. There is such a difference in what all of them are stocking there is no consistency.  If you don't see something, ask them to check in the back too.

It really is strange how Hasbro has fumbled JW so badly, especially when you consider the stellar job they've done with Transformers and Star Wars.
