Over the course of Kenner’s Jurassic Park line, three figures used the same Lycaenops sculpt. The first one was made for Series 2 in 1994. The second one was for the 2000 Jurassic Park: Dinosaurs line under the bizarre name of “Lynx.” And finally, Kenner made the third one for their Chaos Effect line, but called it the “Tyrannops.” Crazy.

For starters, I already have a slight problem with Kenner reusing this sculpt. It’s supposed to be a Tyrannosaurus rex/Lycaenops hybrid, but all it is really is an exotic repaint. So what was the point of saying it’s part T. rex in that case? But anyway, on to the paint job now. The base colour is a bright orange with creamy yellow and black stripes all over. The upper part of the head is black with pupiless white eyes surrounded by blue patches. Some people might say it’s overkill, but I’m a fan of this color scheme and think it’s more interesting then the previous two.

For action features, this toy has the exact same one as before where raising one of the back legs causes the upper jaw to open. As a bonus, the upper jaw can be posed so you can make it look like it is broken or even twisted 180 degrees around. The spring on my Tyrannops is super quick to react and opens up quite widely. It also springs up a purple tongue. While the feature is rather springy, it also feels super tough and not easily breakable.

In summation, this figure’s paint job is crazy, but also super memorable. The action feature is super springy, but fun and durable. Overall, I’d say that the Tyrannops is one of the better Chaos Effect figures with one of the best action features and a lovely paint job.
