Diprotodon (Lost Kingdoms Series A by Yowie)

Marsupials are a fascinating group of mammals. With the ability to have multiple young at once and pouches to keep them safe. They have been around for millions of years, now restricted to Australia and South America. Australia once had the largest member of this class: Diprotodon, a giant Wombat relative the size of rhinos, they died out 50,000 years ago, just as the first Aborigines came to Australia. As Yowie is an Australian company, naturally this featured in their Lost Kingdoms lines, which focused on extinct animals across time.

This is a pretty small figure, measuring 2.3″ long and 1.2″ high, making it a decent size to be a joey for the bigger (and less cartoonish) Southlands Replicas version. The pose is similar to that model, with it plodding along, though this also has articulation in the head, allowing it to be moved 360°. It’s an all over brown, looking almost bear like. Dull, but works quite well.

Out with it’s mama, the Southlands Replicas Diprotodon.

Though seeming cheap and cartoonish, accuracy is more or less on point, capturing all of Diprotodon’s features, like a large nose and body, though perhaps a little too rounded. The feet aren’t quite right, being overly simplified, but given the nature of this toy, I find it forgivable.

Though it suffers in areas, I do find this to be quite a charming little model. Diprotodon is not an often made model, so to get any is a plus in my opinion. It makes for a nice companion to the Southlands model, and I do recommend picking it up if you can find it. Best to try eBay, as the line is long discontinued. Best of luck tracking it, it is worth it!
